About the job
Job summary
The Food Standards Agency (FSA) is a small government department with a big mission: to keep food safe and ensure that it is what it says it is and is increasingly healthy and more sustainable.
We’re looking for a Food Hygiene Controls Advisor who can play a big role in one of our largest endeavours to meet these ambitious goals. Our official controls work to protect food and animal feed produced in this country, ensuring it meets our high standards so that consumers can have confidence in what they are eating.
Job description
Much of this work is carried out by local authorities under FSA supervision - so it is vital that we are able to ensure the same level of scrutiny and... protection from every local authority across the nation.
The Food Hygiene Controls Advisor plays a major role in this, supporting both local authorities and the wider Regulatory Compliance Division by responding to queries about the delivery and implementation of food controls.
The wide ranges of challenges faced by local authorities mean this role is always interesting - an ever-evolving learning experience that requires the holder to work fast and juggle different priorities to ensure no query is left unanswered.
You will be ready to explore different areas within the complex landscape of food hygiene controls, and make effective decisions based around these. Working in a close and supportive team, your impact will be keenly felt by the food industry in Britain and help the nation to eat knowing that their food is safe and held to the highest standards.
You’ll also be an excellent communicator - as adept at listening and understanding queries and problems as you are at explaining solutions and forming relationships with the many stakeholders and FSA teams that you’ll be working alongside. If you feel that this is an area you could make an impact in, apply today and help us keep food safe for everyone.

About the job
Job summary
The FSA is a non-ministerial department of over 1400 people. Having left the EU, we play a critical role in protecting public health and consumers’ wider interests in food across England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Our vision is an important one - to drive change, delivering “food you can trust” and working towards a healthier and more sustainable food system.
Job description
Though a relatively small government department, the FSA’s remit is huge, impacting the food eaten by every single person in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland, as well as the feed given to animals entering the nations’ food supply systems. It’s important, then, that our people feel supported so that we can... collectively find success, fulfilling our mission to ensure that food is safe, and that it is what it says it is.
Our HR teams are constantly working to develop the FSA’s approaches and practices to better serve our people and improve our capabilities as an Agency.
The HR Business Partnering & People Services Lead will play a key role in this effort. Leading a team of four HR Business Partners, you will seek to further enhance how we partner with senior management teams. The FSA is a progressive and forward-thinking government department with a unique combination of flexible working and frontline operational delivery. The team’s work reflects this, and you will focus on development opportunities that will increase the capabilities of the Business Partners and better serve the organisation.
You will look to take advantage of every opportunity afforded to our team, from digital applications that can enhance the capture and impact of HR data through to hands-on coaching to enable personal development within the team.
Leading the People and Business Services team, you will work to embed a customer-focussed approach that will empower colleagues across the FSA to do their best work. From the provision of high-quality HR advice to the onboarding of new staff into the organisation, your work will impact the wellbeing of those who work so hard to keep food safe. Your work with Business Services will help identify opportunities for improvement across the business, drawing on HR data-led insights and analysis.
As an active member of the People and Organisational Change (POC) Senior Leadership Team, you will actively work to ensure our people feel supported in their work and will build strong relationships with leaders and managers at all levels across the FSA, as well as with internal and external specialists. Your focus will always be on identifying areas that hold potential for improvement and working to see that this improvement is realised for the benefit of all within the organisation.
This is a fantastic opportunity for a talented leader and effective communicator who can influence and inspire those around them. Being able to grasp the big picture is only the first step for the successful candidate here - you will need to be able to utilise your skills to identify those elements that can be improved and make the decisions necessary to bring about a better FSA for all parties involved. If you believe you are up to this challenge, do not hesitate to apply.

The National Food Crime Unit (NFCU) plays a distinct and important role within the Food Standards Agency (FSA), acting as a dedicated law enforcement unit that investigates food crimes in the UK. The forms these crimes can take varies greatly - culprits may be placed anywhere within the food system, putting the nation’s food at risk.
One vital area of the NFCU’s work is in the field of financial investigations. The unit has powers under the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002 which allows the FSA to confiscate assets made through illegal means. This action can play a powerful role in the Agency’s work... hampering the abilities of criminals and allowing the FSA to more effectively combat food crime.
Job description
This exciting position as a Senior Financial Investigator for the NFCU will put you at the heart of these investigations. Working with colleagues in the Agency to create a hostile environment for food criminals in the UK, you will seek to disrupt their activities and afford the NFCU every opportunity to permanently end their operations.
Conducting financial investigations thoroughly, professionally, and expeditiously in accordance with legislative requirements, you will play a vital role within the team, acting as a trusted source of advice and information on financial investigation matters to the NFCU, FSA and wider stakeholder and partner agencies.
The role is varied, and you will undertake a variety of duties, from contributing to effective risk management, liaising with the Case Team and Crown Prosecution Service, and supporting the Head of Investigations and Financial Investigation in maintaining working relationships with other law enforcement agencies across the UK.
You should have a positive and forward-thinking attitude. A willingness to learn will be key, as will an innovative mindset that will allow them to make effective new approaches to problems. If you are a fast and diligent worker who is passionate about protecting the nation’s food and can make effective decisions that will create a positive impact to this effect, apply today for this exciting opportunity.
As this is an investigatory / intelligence role we need to be aware if any of our employees have any of the following: any misconduct or gross misconduct findings or where proceedings are not complete. You will be asked to complete a declaration form covering the above if offered a role with the FSA.
You must declare to the best of your knowledge:
• Any disciplinary finding of guilt / failure to meet the appropriate standard of conduct relating to your employment you have ever had
• Any charge of a disciplinary offence / notification of a failure to meet the appropriate standards you have ever had where the case has not yet been concluded
The disclosure of this information will not automatically disbar you from this role but we need to be aware of any event or issue which could impinge on your credibility if questioned in court.

Having left the EU, we play a critical role in protecting public health and consumers’ wider interests in food across England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Our vision is an important one - to drive change, delivering “food you can trust” and working towards a healthier and more sustainable food system.
Job description
The Food Standards Agency (FSA) is a small, non-ministerial government department that has a big remit: to keep food safe and ensure that it is what it says it is, and that it is increasingly healthy and more sustainable. As we seek to deliver on these objectives, we rely on extensive use of independent research to offer up the evidence that shapes our work.
The FSA is looking for a Deputy Director who can lead the Analytics Unit in our Science, Evidence and Research Directorate (SERD). The food sector is impacted by a wide range of external factors, and the UK’s exit from the EU... alongside global concerns including the Covid-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine have in recent years demonstrated some of the vulnerabilities this presents us with. The Analytics unit works to identify trends and offer insights into how we might shape our operations in the medium to long term to better serve the consumer.
Guiding the Analytics Unit, you will work to deliver timely and relevant evidence that will inform strategy, policy and operations decisions, enabling the FSA to continue fulfilling its duties as a regulator for food across the country. The unit, which comprises economists, statisticians, analysts and researchers delivers across a range of areas, including priorities that require urgent attention. This work will bring you into contact with a range of external and cross-government stakeholders, and you will build partnerships that better enable our delivery on a variety of fronts, impacting research and analysis across the organisation. In this leadership position, you will also have budgetary responsibility for the Analytics Unit portfolio.
You will act as joint head of the SERD senior leadership team, working on the development and alignment of science within the organisation, and identifying strategic gaps in our work. You will frame research questions, identify appropriate methodology, and provide quality assurance to our work, drawing out and translating key points. This senior leadership role will also see you tie the Analytics Unit’s work more closely with the Openness, Data & Digital division’s function, maximising synergies and building a shared analysis-data strategy for the FSA.
If you are able to support the delivery of important analytical insights that can guide our work, considering the big picture and creating a better view of it for others across the FSA, apply today.
This role has a minimum assignment duration of 3 years. Please note this is an expectation only, it is not something which is written into your terms and conditions or indeed which the employing organisation or you are bound by.
