Position Summary
The University of Georgia Press seeks a highly motivated Editor-in-Chief to
manage and expand our distinguished publications program. The Editor-in-Chief
will lead the Acquisitions department, serve on the Press management team, and
represent the Press to external audiences, including the University, the
community, and the global academy.
The ideal candidate will demonstrate clear evidence of collaborative
leadership skills, as well as exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability
to work in a highly collaborative and inclusive environment that leverages the
benefits of diverse perspectives.
Since its founding in 1938, the primary mission of the University of Georgia
Press has been to support and enhance the University's place as a major
research institution by publishing both outstanding works of scholarship by
writers throughout the world and books of interest to general readers. The
Press has been a member of the Association of University Presses since 1940
and is the largest book publisher in the state. With a full-time staff of 20
publishing professionals, the Press currently publishes 60-70 new books a year
(+$2 million per year in sales) and has over 2,000 titles in print. Active
imprints include NewSouth Books and Milestone Press. The Press is a founding
partner of the New Georgia Encyclopedia, the state's award-winning online
reference work on the people, places, events, and institutions of Georgia. The
Press has reported to the University of Georgia Libraries since 2010.

• Proven managerial and leadership skills.
• Experience with departmental budgeting, forecasting, and spreadsheets.
• Ability to facilitate constructive interaction with scholars, colleagues,

• Manage the Acquisitions department, including acquisitions editors,
editorial assistants, graduate assistants, and paid interns.
• Coordinate the work of the department, including maintaining departmental
procedures and budgets, schedules, contract negotiations, and project fund
raising.
• Provide editorial vision to meet strategic directions of the Press and
assume responsibility for development and growth of the editorial program,
list building, and project development.
• Manage seasonal planning and list revenue analysis.
• Establish departmental and individual goals and support staff in achieving
them.
• Conduct annual performance reviews.
• Communicate regularly with editors to support progress and professional
development.
• Represent the Press to the University, the community, and the academy,
including talks, presentations, workshops, and conference attendance.
• Convene the Press's Early Decision Committee and Editorial Board.
• Participate in and contribute to the Press's digital and open access
initiatives, suggesting policy and monitoring evolving needs and concerns
of the scholarly community.
• Foster campus, statewide, and other collaborations.
