About GiveWell

GiveWell is motivated by the simple question: how can we do as much good as possible?

In our efforts to answer this question, our researchers search for and recommend outstanding philanthropic giving opportunities. We focus on global health and poverty alleviation programs in the lowest-income parts of the world because that is where we've found we can have the greatest impact, according to our criteria.

We direct funding to outstanding giving opportunities in two main ways:
• Our recommended charities. We rigorously vet and recommend a short list of top charities that meet our criteria of being evidence-backed, cost-effective, transparent, and in need of more funding. Our nine current top charities work on death-averting (malaria chemoprevention, antimalarial nets, vaccine incentivization, and vitamin A supplementation) and life-improving (providing cash transfers and deworming medication) programs.
• We continuously review our giving recommendations, and this analysis is available, for free, on our website. Based on our recommendations, donors have given more than $800 million to our recommended programs since our founding in 2007. In 2020 alone, GiveWell donors contributed more than $170 million to our recommendations, which we estimate will avert between 29,000 and 48,000 deaths and provide parasitic worm treatments for over 12 million children.
• Grants to promising opportunities. GiveWell also recommends grants to projects whose impact is less directly measurable but might be even greater than that of our recommended charities. Past grants include support for an initiative to improve the uptake and implementation by governments of evidence-based policy and the first randomized controlled trial of mask-wearing in a low-income country to increase mask use and prevent COVID-19 transmission.

Going forward, we expect to broaden the scope of what we consider funding. We will remain driven by our search for funding opportunities that can save or improve lives the most.

The role

Senior Researchers at GiveWell are the intellectual leaders who guide our exploration of how we can do the most good. In this role, you will be responsible for finding, researching, and ultimately recommending high-impact or potentially high-impact giving opportunities. As part of a small team, you will be a significant contributor to our decisions about how hundreds of millions of dollars will be spent with the goal of saving and improving the lives of people living in the lowest-income communities in the world.

You will be a leader on our research team, conducting research to help us identify outstanding programs to recommend. Examples of questions Senior Researchers have worked on recently include:
• What is the impact of building footbridges in rural communities?
• What should we believe about the impacts of improved water quality on all-cause mortality?
• How can we model the general equilibrium effects of cash transfers?

In addition to the core work of identifying outstanding programs, Senior Researchers own messy and complicated questions that inform our analysis, such as:
• How can we improve our approach to cost-effectiveness modeling?
• How should we use pooled impact estimates from a highly heterogeneous evidence base?
• How should we prioritize programs that reduce poverty relative to programs that reduce deaths? What is the moral value of each outcome?
• How should we think about the opportunity cost of other actors’ contributions to programs we fund?

Our Senior Researchers leverage a combination of critical research review and synthesis, empirical analysis, modeling, logical reasoning, and good judgment in order to make practical recommendations on a topic.

About you

Senior Researchers typically have a quantitatively oriented advanced degree and/or substantive relevant experience. They also have the intellectual flexibility to tackle a wide range of questions such as those listed above.

We expect you will be characterized by many of the below qualities. We encourage you to apply if you would use the majority of these characteristics to describe yourself:
• You are passionate about helping improve global health and alleviate global poverty as much as possible.
• You are highly skilled at critically analyzing and synthesizing empirical research and understanding how a body of evidence may apply to real-world problems.
• You are able to plan an efficient approach to exploring complicated questions, including identifying and focusing on the most decision-relevant aspects of a project.
• You consider the big picture, asking questions like: is this project appropriately formulated and the best use of my time? What is GiveWell getting wrong in our research?
• You clearly communicate what you believe and why, as well as what you are uncertain about.
• You ask a lot of questions, and are curious, rather than defensive, when interrogating your own or others’ work.
• You are able to execute research that holds up under scrutiny from others and over time.
• You are respectful, effective, and efficient in your interactions with colleagues as well as external parties.

Confidence can sometimes hold us back from applying for a job. Here’s a secret: there's no such thing as a "perfect" candidate. GiveWell is looking for exceptional people who want to make a positive impact through their work and help create an organization where everyone can thrive. So whatever background you bring with you, please apply if this role would make you excited to come to work every day.

As a Research Analyst on GiveWell's Commons team, you will support our broader research team in identifying cost-effective giving opportunities. Your work will contribute to GiveWell’s decisions about how hundreds of millions of dollars will be spent to save and improve the lives of people living in the lowest-income communities in the world. You will also play a key role in fulfilling... our commitment to transparency and ensuring that the work we produce is accurate and high quality.

You will contribute to our work in a variety of ways, including:
• Writing public summaries of the reasoning behind our grant decisions
• Quality checking pages we publish about our work and spreadsheets that we rely on to inform our decision making
• Answering defined research questions via desk research (for example, “What options does a maize farmer in Malawi have for selling their product?” or “How does the U.S. Congress make decisions about how to appropriate funding for global health programs?”)
• Summarizing results from the monitoring and evaluation reports that grantees send us
• Updating our cost-effectiveness analyses to reflect new information or analysis performed by other research staff
• Providing occasional project management support (more detail below)
Team structure

Our research team is organized into subteams that each focus on a specific area of our grantmaking (malaria, water quality, vaccines, etc.). The Commons team is external to these subteams; we provide shared and flexible research capacity so we can direct our effort toward the highest priority areas at a given time. As a Research Analyst on the Commons team, you will have opportunities to learn about and contribute to investigations across research subteams, giving you a breadth of knowledge about GiveWell's work.

You may also have opportunities to temporarily embed in a subteam for the duration of a grant investigation or other project. During these periods, in addition to the research work noted above, you may be asked to help with the project management of research investigations, which can include tasks like maintaining our information management systems, keeping track of progress and checking in with relevant stakeholders as needed, scheduling and taking notes during calls with external contacts, and generally driving our investigations forward.

In some cases, we expect that Research Analysts who are excelling in their role will be embedded permanently in a research subteam.

About GiveWell

GiveWell is motivated by the simple question: How can we do as much good as possible?

Our staff researches and makes grants to support the most cost-effective global health programs that save and improve lives. We focus on global health and poverty alleviation in the lowest-income parts of the world because that is where we've found we can have the greatest impact.

Since 2007, we’ve directed over $2 billion to cost-effective programs and interventions. In 2022, we directed over $400 million. GiveWell is one of the world’s largest private funders of global development efforts, and we estimate that the funding we've directed will save more than 200,000 lives.

Recent grants have supported programs that:
• Are evidence-backed, cost-effective, transparent, and in need of more funding. Many of our largest grants have supported malaria chemoprevention, antimalarial nets, vaccine incentivization, vitamin A supplementation, and deworming medication.
• Seek to scope and scale promising interventions that don't have clear existing implementers. We are supporting the Clinton Health Access Initiative's Incubator and Evidence Action's Accelerator to identify potentially cost-effective interventions and create programs that we would be excited to support in the future. For example, we recently funded a program to provide diarrhea treatment to children in Nigeria that we co-designed with CHAI through the Incubator program.
• Test our assumptions through further research, including studies on the effect of water chlorination on mortality, the impact of a tree-planting program on farmers' income, and the effects of combining the RTS,S malaria vaccine and perennial malaria chemoprevention.

We’ve grown from raising $1.5 million annually in 2010 to over $600 million in 2022 .

We’ve achieved these fundraising results by building deep, trusted relationships with our donors over time. Our lean team of seven front-line fundraisers pairs industry... best practices with a dedication to transparency in order to provide honest advisory services to our highest-value donors, prioritizing long-term trust over quick financial wins. We’d like to hire someone to take our front-line fundraising team to the next level. We are looking for an exceptional leader to report to and partner with our Director of Development to build and grow a world-class team of fundraisers and take GiveWell’s impact to new heights.

This opportunity is unique:
• We’re a crowdsourced foundation moving hundreds of millions of dollars each year. We’ve found exceptional product-market fit and have a history of major donors committing between six and nine figures annually. We have no endowment; we raise hundreds of millions of dollars each year based on the strength of our research product and the relationships we’ve built with donors over the years. Our donors are interested in the rigor and complexity of our research, and we mostly raise money for other organizations, which makes this work look and feel different than most nonprofit fundraising.
• Moving more money is an organizational priority. Our primary goal is to move as much money as possible to the most cost-effective giving opportunities that we can find. We can only do that with a strong fundraising strategy that deepens our relationships with key donors all around the world. We are committed to ensuring the fundraising team has the resources it needs to succeed.
• Unique donor pyramid. Our donor base ranges from billionaires giving tens and even hundreds of millions of dollars each year to a “long tail” of individuals giving <$100. You’ll be responsible for appropriately staffing outreach for the full portfolio of donors, with specific focus on donors giving over $10,000.
• Impact pathway. GiveWell’s work saves and improves lives around the world. This role can be the difference between reaching and not reaching our ambitious fundraising goals, which, according to our research estimates, translate to around 20,000 additional lives saved.
• We have a strong brand that donors want to engage with. We have built a trusted research product that many people write about and engage with . Donors have a high level of trust in us, and many are eager for deeper engagement and relationships.
• High pay, high expectations, high performance. We’re a small team because we’re able to attract the best. We maintain a high-performing, collegial culture and pay accordingly.

Core responsibilities
• Managing the fundraising team. Your primary responsibility will be hiring, growing, and leading the team of front-line fundraisers, acting like the manager of a high-performing sales team. You’ll coach them through challenging issues, direct them on how to allocate their time, and inspire them to bring their best to their job every day.
• Developing our donor engagement strategy. You’ll work with the Director of Development to develop and execute a strategy for engaging with all types of donors, from the largest and most invested to the smallest “mass” donors.
• Owning relationships with major donors. You and your team will own relationships with major donors, some of whom are giving millions of dollars via GiveWell each year.
• Owning engagement with our donors. You will oversee the team in charge of the program for donors giving between $10,000 and $1 million. The goal is to maintain donor retention while spotting the opportunities for donors who can grow their giving capacity over time.
• Partner with other outreach team leads. You’ll work collaboratively with the leaders of the communications and development operations teams.
• Special projects as needed. For example, we’re thinking about whether we should offer any bespoke research services. We’ll ask you to take point on developing a point of view on this and similar decisions.
• Anything else that helps us achieve our mission. We hope you’ll come with ideas.

Who might be a good fit

You might be a good fit for this work if you:
• Have experience fundraising from ultra-high-net-worth individuals (or equivalent relationship management experience in other settings, such as B2B sales or business development). You understand the challenges and opportunities specific to this group of donors, and how to work with them most effectively.
• Are an experienced manager with a talent for developing and motivating high performers.
• Have a solid understanding of GiveWell’s work. You feel able to represent GiveWell positively and persuasively to donors with a wide range of backgrounds and levels of familiarity with our work.
• Are sufficiently comfortable with economic principles and quantitative reasoning to translate technical content for a non-technical donor audience (with support from other staff—you don’t need to be an expert on our research yourself).
• Have great interpersonal skills and the ability to interface effectively with people in all program areas at GiveWell and externally.
• Have experience developing team strategy and identifying and executing opportunities to grow revenue streams.

The ideal candidate for this position will possess many of the skills and experiences described above. However, there is no such thing as a “perfect” candidate. If you are on the fence about applying because you are unsure whether you are qualified, we would strongly encourage you to apply. We hope you’ll also tell us which elements of the role you’re most and least excited about.

We’ve grown from raising $1.5 million annually in 2010 to over $600 million in 2022 .
Despite the size of our impact, we’re a relatively small team of about 70 people. Our communications responsibilities are currently split between several staff members. We’d like to hire... someone to take leadership of our communications responsibilities, consolidating them into a single team. We believe that a strong communications function is critical to our continued growth, and we are looking for an exceptional leader who’s excited to find unique ways to tell GiveWell’s story of impact to new and existing audiences across the globe.
This opportunity is unique:
We’re committed to transparency. Our first priority is being open and honest with our donors and followers. We do not oversell and we do not hide our mistakes . We’re looking for someone to get creative about sharing the rigor and complexity of our work in high-fidelity ways, which will most likely look and feel different than most nonprofit communications campaigns.
Communications is an organizational priority. Our primary goal is to move as much money as possible to the most cost-effective giving opportunities that we can find. We can only do that with a strong communications strategy that translates our technical research into compelling calls to action. We are committed to ensuring the communications team has the resources it needs to succeed. From leveraging internal stakeholders like the CEO, growing the FTE headcount of the communications function, or anything else that helps produce top-notch communications about GiveWell.
Impact pathway. This role can be the difference between reaching our ambitious fundraising goals and not, which directly affects GiveWell’s ability to save and improve lives around the world.
Our brand is ready for greater influence. We have built a trusted research product that many people write about and engage with . We have strong relationships with writers, influencers, and thought leaders that are ready to be taken to the next level.
High pay, high expectations, high performance. We’re a small team because we’re able to attract the best. We maintain a high-performing, collegial culture and pay accordingly.
Core responsibilities Under your leadership, the GiveWell communications team will be responsible for:
Owning what we say . You will create and maintain a comprehensive communications strategy and be the go-to person driving what we say and where we say it. This includes being the chief steward of our brand, our voice, and our messaging to key audiences, and any risk management associated with it.
Communicating about our work in the world. It’s critical to our growth that we share the rigor, complexity, and nuance of our research in compelling ways on owned, earned, and paid channels. You will set a content publication agenda for our staff’s research and ideas, generating content from both your team of communications professionals as well as via supporting the external voice of our senior researchers.
Maintaining GiveWell’s excellent brand . You will monitor GiveWell’s brand reputation (via press coverage, mentions, etc) and evaluate risks to our brand to guide our decision making accordingly (for example, by determining whether we should partner with a particular influencer or not). You will also help bolster our brand by generating positive coverage and conversation, via the press or other channels.
Managing press relationships and securing media coverage . You will pitch stories, manage press requests, decide which interviews we will take and who takes them, handle interview prep, build and maintain relationships with journalists, and work with our external PR firm.
Fast, reliable service on day-to-day communications operations . Under your leadership, the communications team will manage “bread and butter” communications items like updating the website, monitoring social media, and writing our newsletters and donor emails.
Special projects as needed . For example, we’re currently reviewing the use of the word “charities” in our public messaging and deciding if we should update this language (e.g., to “organizations” or “grantees”) We’ll ask you to take point on similar decisions.
Anything else that helps us achieve our mission . We hope you’ll come with ideas.
Who might be a good fit You might be a good fit for this work if you:
Are a gifted storyteller in terms of writing, content creation, and thought leadership, who can craft a compelling narrative about our mission.
Have good instincts for how a range of audiences are likely to perceive our communications output. You can usually predict when something might be confusing, off-putting, or easy to misconstrue, and can help us navigate communicating complex ideas with sensitivity and nuance.
Are able to write and edit quickly and cleanly in our voice. To get a sense of the style of writing you would be asked to oversee, we encourage you to read a few past blog posts (two examples are here and here ). In general, we strive to communicate as clearly and carefully as possible, with strong reasoning transparency. While we want to make a positive case for our work, we will not sacrifice accuracy and rigor. We do not mislead donors or other consumers of our work.
Have a solid understanding of GiveWell’s work. You feel able to represent GiveWell positively and persuasively to people with a wide range of backgrounds and levels of familiarity with our work.
Are sufficiently comfortable with economic principles and quantitative reasoning to translate technical content for a non-technical audience (with support from other staff — you don’t need to be an expert on our research yourself).
Have great interpersonal skills and the ability to interface effectively with people in all program areas at GiveWell and externally.
Experience with PR and media is a plus.
Management experience is a plus.

About GiveWell GiveWell is motivated by the simple question: How can we do as much good as possible?
Our staff researches and makes grants to support the most cost-effective global health programs that save and improve lives. We focus on global health and poverty alleviation in the lowest-income parts of the world because that is where we've found we can have the greatest impact.
Since 2007, we’ve directed over $2 billion to cost-effective programs and interventions. In 2022, we directed over $400 million . GiveWell is one of the world’s largest private funders of global development efforts, and we estimate that the funding we've directed has saved more than 200,000 lives.
Recent grants have supported programs that:
Seek to scope and scale promising interventions that don't have clear existing implementers.

The role

Content Editors at GiveWell play a key role in fulfilling our commitment to transparency and ensuring that the work we produce is accurate and high quality, so that we can direct funding as well as possible.

As a Content Editor, you will contribute to our work in a variety of ways, such as:
• Summarizing research calls. Publishing notes from these calls helps us fulfill our commitment to transparency, keep track of what we learn from others, and check our understanding of what we learned on these calls with the people we talked to.
• Quality control. You will conduct very detailed reviews of pages we publish about our work and spreadsheets that we rely on to inform our decision making. Your work will serve as an important check on our research conclusions to increase our confidence that we're directing funding as well as possible.
• Other research and operational support. You may help out with work streams such as collecting and organizing information for research projects, assessing applications, project managing certain work streams, and/or publishing our work.

In the past, many content editors have gone on to other roles at GiveWell in areas including outreach (talking with donors about their giving and/or writing materials to share with our donors), research (grant making to our top charities, cost-effectiveness modeling, project managing our growing research work streams), donations management, and technological projects.

• Can write clearly and concisely
• Have very high attention to detail
• Communicate clearly and productively with your colleagues
• Check in proactively when you're unsure about something or when you notice something that could be improved
• Are receptive to feedback and willing to provide feedback to others

Other highly desirable qualities:
• You're passionate about maximizing global well-being. GiveWell is focused on programs that target low- and low-to-middle-income countries. You want to contribute to GiveWell’s mission and are passionate about maximizing what can be accomplished with the resources available to help the people in these countries, including thinking critically about difficult tradeoffs between different good outcomes.
• You're excited to work at a growing, agile organization. GiveWell currently has about 50 full-time staff. This means that we expect a lot from each person, and we often ask people to contribute outside their core area of focus. If you like trying and learning new things, we are potentially a great fit.

There's no perfect candidate for this (or any) role; we're looking for exceptional people who want to create a world where everyone can thrive. If you think you would be excited to go to work each day as a Content Editor, please apply!

About GiveWell

We focus on global health and poverty alleviation programs in the lowest-income parts of the world because that is where we've found we can have the greatest impact, according to our criteria .

In 2020, we directed over $240 million . In 2021, we anticipate directing over $400 million (our numbers were not yet final as of this writing). We aim to direct $1 billion per year by 2025 , making GiveWell one of the world's largest private funders of global development efforts.

Recent grants have supported programs that:
• Are evidence-backed, cost-effective, transparent, and in need of more funding. Many of our largest grants have supported malaria chemoprevention , antimalarial nets , vaccine incentivization , vitamin A supplementation and deworming medication .
• Have the potential to have an outsized impact through affecting health policy. Grants have supported lead reduction , pesticide suicide prevention , alcohol control , and testing the effectiveness of face masks .
• Test our assumptions through further research, such as for antimalarial nets , water chlorination , and vaccine incentivization .

GiveWell is committed to supporting each person's physical and mental well-being and professional growth. We invest in that commitment by offering the following benefits:
• Healthcare. We provide fully funded health and vision insurance and a dental stipend for staff and their families.
• Insurance. We provide life and short- and long-term disability insurance for staff.
• Flexible and remote options. We support and encourage flexible working for most roles, including flexible hours, working remotely, and working from the office when you choose. The majority of staff work flexibly one way or another. We happily employ staff remotely and generally request that employees work within three hours of the Pacific Time Zone.
• Paid time off. We offer 20 days per year of paid time off, in addition to 11 paid holidays and 10 days of paid sick leave. We also provide bereavement leave, time off for unforeseen hardships, and optional unpaid leave. We are always happy to discuss options with staff if more flexibility is required in a given situation.
• Parental leave. For new parents of all types, we offer 12 weeks of paid parental leave.
• Optional 403(b) plan. GiveWell hosts a 403(b) plan for staff retirement savings. After considering the most equitable way to provide a flexible retirement benefit to all staff, we decided to increase staff salaries rather than providing a matching employer contribution. The salaries we offer already include this increase.
• Professional development. We offer an annual allowance for staff to spend on coaching, courses, workshops, conferences, and other engagements to support professional development goals. We also have a 10% flex time policy: staff are welcome to spend up to 10% of their work hours on projects indirectly related to their work, such as taking courses, reading books about global health and development, etc.
• Wellness stipend. To support staff in their physical and mental health, we offer an annual stipend for expenses such as gym memberships, therapy, meditation retreats, exercise equipment, etc.
• Office equipment and work space. We want all staff to be able to work at maximum effectiveness regardless of where their primary workspace is and to have a workspace that supports their physical well-being. We provide staff with options for ergonomic equipment and work stations and will work with you on setting up an efficient workspace. For remote staff who are interested, we will cover memberships at co-working spaces.
• Office visits for remote staff. To promote social cohesion in an organization with a lot of remote staff, we schedule regular optional visit weeks and cover the cost of travel and lodging for visiting staff. These are just now re-starting after the disruptions of the pandemic, but we hope to regain a routine cadence throughout 2022 and beyond
