Requirements

• Comfortable working under minimal supervision
• Reliable transportation and clean driving record if applicable
• Flexibility to work overtime as needed
• Able to pass a standardized color blindness test

We are seeking a talented professional with applied, international experience linking research and capacity development on cutting-edge topics in environmental governance. This position may be based anywhere in the world and is preferably full time, however part time arrangements can be explored for exceptional candidates. Successful applicant will contribute to international research partnerships aiming to enhance the capabilities of civil society organizations working at local, national, and regional scales. Current research areas include: community-led landscape restoration; tenure security in coastal fisheries, forests, and pasturelands; climate action; multi-stakeholder platforms; systems leadership; gender equity; and citizen engagement in policy reform.

Responsibilities:

The Global Research Leader has accountability for the quality and effectiveness of CoRe’s applied research output and capacity building support.
• Supporting partner field teams to conduct case studies of local institutional innovation and scaling, using political economy analysis.
• Synthesizing findings across multiple sites, drawing upon case studies, primary documentation and interviews, to assess and refine strategies for systems change.
• Implementing monitoring and evaluation protocols, aimed at building evidence of program performance and supporting learning and adaptation.
• Drafting, reviewing and editing peer-reviewed research articles, practitioner guidance materials, policy briefs, blogs and other materials to communicate research insights to a wider audience.
• Leading design and delivery of partnership activities, including action research, exchange of lessons, training and certification programs.
• Lead, inspire, mentor and coach team members and partners to build discipline, creativity, and excellence in research, communications, and capacity strengthening.
• As a core member of the organizational leadership team, contribute to overall organizational management and strategic decision-making.

Qualifications:
• Ph.D. in a relevant social science discipline (political science, sociology, anthropology, geography, public policy, development studies, institutional economics, organizational development, etc.) or Master’s with additional experience.
• 5-7 years of experience in the analysis of environmental governance challenges, including civil society, government and private sector partnerships, preferably in the rural development context, including significant research and communications output for both specialized and broad audiences.
• Strong, independent analytical perspective and skills, combined with mature interpersonal communications skills to provide trusted guidance to staff and partners at multiple levels.
• Familiarity with institutional and policy context of international development and environmental governance, including organizations at field, national and international levels.
• Excellent research skills, with experience in qualitative, comparative analysis, including ability to present complex information in a concise manner. Clear track record of high-quality writing, combining analytical precision with compelling narrative.
• Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to international cooperation and imperatives of social and ecological resilience. Ability to successfully navigate complex institutional dynamics, frequently involving tension over competing priorities and perspectives.
• Language skills are an advantage, including French, Spanish, Hindi and other national / regional languages in areas of CoRe operations.
• Creative, entrepreneurial, resilient outlook, with adaptability and humor. Readiness to travel internationally to support partnerships as required.
