The WNYC/Gothamist Newsroom is seeking a creative and collaborative Digital Producer to join our growing digital audience team. This role is a key part of our newsroom's ambitions to grow our audience and evolve how we engage with communities we cover.

The ideal candidate is a passionate journalist with a nuanced grasp of how audiences consume stories across social media, newsletters, and search engines. Because this person works evenings, Tuesday to Fridays (12-7:30 p.m. ET) and Saturdays (10 a.m.-5:30 p.m. ET), they must be a self-starter with great time management, self discipline, and impeccable news judgment. It is essential that this candidate can make quick decisions around breaking news and possess the ability to write sharp, accurate copy in high pressure situations.

The right candidate will have a passion for attracting diverse audiences and an interest in experimenting with new methods to reach those audiences. Creativity and collaborative skills are a must.

This role reports to the Editor of the Audience team in the newsroom.

Responsibilities
• Produce the Gothamist Evening Headlines newsletter, WNYC Morning Brief, breaking news email alerts, and QC other newsletters in collaboration with other audience team members and editors/reporters across the newsroom
• Collaborate with the Social Media Producer to strategize, manage, and create social posts for WNYC & Gothamist Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook accounts
• Use news judgment and audience metrics (i.e. Chartbeat) to keep the Gothamist homepage updated throughout entire shift, including creating special collections and writing homepage-specific headlines
• QC every Gothamist story’s headline to ensure they meet best practices outlined in our newsrooms’s web headline checklist
• Collaborate with the Visuals Editor to ensure high quality images are attached to every story which translate across digital platforms
• Create more ways to directly interact with readers and improve audience engagement efforts
• Work with the Audience Editor to fill in for other digital and social producers as needed
• Collaborate with broader audience team to come up with new strategies to connect with readers across emerging platforms

Qualifications
• At least 3 years experience working in journalism, which can include college newspapers or internships
• Experience working in social media, newsletters, or other forms of digital news curation
• Some familiarity with analytics such as Chartbeat, Google Analytics, Parse.ly or another similar metrics platform
• Some familiarity with user experience and SEO content strategies
• Ability to juggle multiple tasks and deadlines
• Proficient in journalism ethics and basic tenets

Additional Information

This is a full-time non-exempt role with an hourly rate of $42.028 ($76,491 annualized at 35 hours per week) plus a full benefits package. New York Public Radio offers excellent medical, dental, and vision insurance, vacation, personal and sick time as well as parental leave.

This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement between New York Public Radio and SAG-AFTRA.

This role is currently operating in a hybrid capacity, with the ability to sometimes work from home. However, this position is part of the NYC staff and will be expected to work from the NYC office on specified days with regularity.

Eligibility

In order to be eligible for an internship at New York Public Radio you must be currently enrolled in, or have graduated no more than 12 months prior to the start of the internship to which you are applying for, from an accredited undergraduate or graduate program.

Additional Information

This role is a paid internship with eligibility for college credit. NYPR internships pay $17.50/hour. The internship will commence on June 5th and run through August 11th and interns are expected to work 35 hours per week, including working a variety of different hours. The exact schedule and hours will be determined with the finalist.

Candidates are expected to work in our New York SoHo office. In order to be eligible, you must be authorized to work in the United States and live/work in a commutable distance of our office.
