Responsibilities

The Optimization and Control Group at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) seeks a PhD intern to support research activities focused on power grid dynamics modeling and simulation with deep penetration of wind energy. The candidate will work with PNNL researchers on development of the GridPACK library to extend its modeling and simulation capabilities. The successful candidate should ideally have a background in power grid dynamics modeling and simulation and have familiarity with simulation tools such as PSS/E, PSCAD. Experience/expertise with developing software tools is an added plus. The candidate is expected to collaborate effectively in a small team and contribute to the assigned objectives.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:
• Candidates must be currently enrolled/matriculated in a PhD program at an accredited college.
• Minimum GPA of 3.0 is required.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Knowledge and experience in the following areas:
• Power grid modeling and simulation
• Dynamics simulation/Transient Stability
• Electromagnetic transients modeling and simulation
• Familiarity with PSSE, PSCAD, or other such tools.
• Software development with C/C++ and/or Python
• Strong verbal and written communication and presentation skills
• Ability to work effectively in a small team
• PhD degree in electrical engineering (with a focus of power and energy systems), or computer science.
• Minimum GPA of 3.5
