The Platform Engineering team is responsible for designing & implementing the cloud platform and software frameworks & libraries that Grubhub software engineers use to build the applications that run the business...

We build scalable and performant systems and tools that form the building blocks of the Grubhub technology stack. To name a few examples:
• Edge networking topology, from Fastly into AWS into the service mesh
• Compute architecture, whether on EKS or AWS Lambda
• internal Python frameworks and tooling

We consult on several internal projects and have a hand in nearly all infrastructure & platform-level design decisions in the company.

Do you want to decide how Every Single Thing Works in your tech stack? This is as close as it gets.

The Impact You Will Make
• Do you have hands-on experience migrating application stacks to Kubernetes in AWS?
• Do you understand the upsides/downsides of instrumenting replicasets vs. deployments?
• Does tuning the HPA/VPA bring back fond memories (or even better, nightmares)?"
• Do you concern yourself with the big picture?
• Your customers ask: “how does Application X run?”
• Your boss asks: “How do we reduce cost on Platform Y?”
• You ask: “In one year, what will we be glad we wrote? What will we enjoy maintaining?”
• You architect platforms and services to run our business efficiently, scalably, and in a way that does the above.
• Do you enjoy writing software to build your infrastructure from config rather than maintaining scripts with a thousand CLI inputs?
• This role will heavily influence the architecture of our Kubernetes platform for years to come.

What You Bring to the Table
• Hands-on experience designing a distributed Kubernetes infrastructure.
• Elevates the observability of our platform and infrastructure.
• Software in one or more of the following OO languages: Python, Java, Go
• Familiarity with open-source infrastructure-as-code tools (Pulumi, Terraform)
• Experience with distributed, scalable microservice-based architectures
• Experience consuming both relational & non-relational databases, with bonus points for data modeling. You will not be managing databases directly but may occasionally debug them.
• We build and own it– provide tier-3 on-call support to internal SRE and software engineering customers.

Got These? Even Better
• Working knowledge of JVM performance tuning
• In-depth knowledge of Linux (understand how things work under the hood)
• Experience with service mesh implementations (Envoy)
• Hands-on experience with partitioned databases (Cassandra, DynamoDB)

About Our Tech
• Tooling: Python, Java and Go, in that order
• Microservice Runtimes: 90% Java, 10% Python and Go
• Persistence: Cassandra, Redis, Memcache, ElasticSearch
• We operate in 3 Amazon regions (hot+hot+hot), building our platform on top of AWS services such as EKS, EC2, S3, SNS/SQS, ElastiCache, Lambda, etc.

New York Salary Range: $197,000 - $256,500
