Are you looking for a weekend job to help supplement your income? Travel the nation with us...
We are the leading live-event photo and video company in our industry. We provide opportunities for contractors who enjoy the freedom of self-management, and creative problem solving. We are looking for dedicated photographers/videographers who love their craft and love to travel!
FREELANCER: Photographers & Videographers for our 2023 season! February - June 2023.
We are looking for:
IMPERATIVE: Someone who understands the dance community, or is open to the LONG hours that are necessary. Generally, competitions can run from 7am - 11pm, call time would be 6am, X days in a row. Times will vary depending on the routine count for each competition. You may have more forgiving hours with smaller competitions, but this is a very common schedule. Setup may be the day prior to competition start, or setup may be in the morning and start time will be in the afternoon.
Someone who is able to travel during the WEEKEND ONLY. Please be aware due to competition size, you may need to fly out Wed, Thurs, or Fri. You will always return home on Mon. You are flexible to choose how many shows you work each month.
Best suited for someone who can take a weekend or two off of your normal routine, monthly. Or, more if you choose!
Job Description:
Must arrive on-time for set up to make sure all of the necessary equipment is tested and ready to go before the show.
Review the show schedule ahead of time to acquaint yourself with the days ahead.
You are responsible for keeping media ORGANIZED and backed-up while on the job. Do not format cards without making sure you have backed up the contents.
Photographers:
Quality of work: MANUAL MODE IN CAMERA. There will be NO EDITING done to your images. Therefore, you MUST be confident in your abilities to use manual mode in camera to keep up with changing exposure. It is important to constantly monitor your exposure, focus and composition. Stage “light shows” will change and can be slightly different for each routine.
Composition: VERY important. Please make sure to keep the stage as level as possible, leave appropriate negative space for printing, be conscious of the shapes in your images, i.e. negative space and dancer position. You are CHOOSING the moments that are captured, make it beautiful! Goal: Dancer’s face/eye is the focal point.
MUST: Take pride in your work! Ability to work in a fast paced shooting environment! Dancers are FAST. Ability to track and capture the “correct” moments, very important. Must be vigilant and able to multitask.
You will be responsible for setting up your camera, laptop/stand to tether into, monopod and taping off your section. You will have 2 perches, one for solo/duo routines, and one for larger groups
Knowledge of Apple MAC computers preferred, not necessary. Must be able to learn quickly. While you are tethered, you will drag images for each routine into their corresponding folders, immediately following the routine. The quicker you are, the more organized you will be, and the less work you will have at the end of the day fixing mistakes.
Photographers, you may be by yourself, or working with a team in which case you will work together to make sure your partner is set up and ready to go. Helping to tape down cords etc. Some competitions are photo only. Most shows will have a photographer and videographer team. Must have experience working as a team player in HIGH STRESS situations.
• Confident in your abilities, must know how to shoot manual mode
• A multi-tasking hero in a FAST-PACED environment
• A self starter, efficient with managing time
• Stamina necessary to shoot 12hr days
• Intuitive and artistic
• Previous photography experience necessary
• Detail oriented, takes pride in your work
• Enjoys traveling
Videographers:
Take pride in your work! Videographers are responsible for setting up video equipment and making sure exposure, WB and audio levels are correct. Must work with the dance competition team to connect and check audio.
Quality of work: Making sure exposure and white balance are correct. Check audio levels. Organizing files in laptop and external hard drive.
Composition: Making sure the stage is level with the bottom of the frame. Don’t leave too much negative space around dancers.
Tracking: Solo/Duo routines will need to be zoomed in more, must have SMOOTH tracking skills. Large groups will require less movement for most of their routine, but inevitably they will come together, and zooming the camera will be necessary to see more of their faces. Fill the frame as much as possible while keeping an appropriate amount of negative space.
Most shows will have a photographer and videographer team. Must have experience working as a team player in HIGH STRESS situations.
• Self starter, efficient with managing time
• Set-up of video equipment with organization in mind [keeping cords neat, etc.]
• Stamina necessary to follow the action all day long
• Previous video experience necessary
• Ability to work alone and with a team
Equipment:
Photographers and Videographers are NOT required to bring their own equipment. Our gear travels with the dance competition, so it will be there waiting for you at setup. Photographers may choose to use their own camera, subject to gear approval.
