Korero mō te tūranga – About the role

The role of the Principal Advisor is to provide leadership in designing and developing new and innovation te ao Māori solutions based on mātauranga. You will work closely with hauora Māori partners, whānau and whai ora, and connect to and support aspirations of Iwi Māori Partnership Boards and Localities. Service design will provide direction, guidance, advice and support to the implementation of Te Pae Tata actions, engagement, workforce development, and interagency initiatives.

This role is instrumental in supporting the Oranga Hinengaro Leadership Team to deliver services that transform the sector through a te ao Māori worldview and addressing inequities for Māori within the system.

Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako | Skills and experience
• Minimum bachelor's degree level tertiary qualification and/or equivalent work experience
• Minimum 6 – 8 years' work experience highly relevant to role
• Māori leadership experience and ability to work with and influence senior leaders and decision-makers to achieve organisational objectives.
• Fluency (or commitment to fluency) in Te Reo Māori alongside of an understanding of the application of mātauranga Māori in the workplace strong understanding of Te Ao Māori and Tikanga.
• Knowledge of the requirements of the Pae Ora (Healthy Futures) Act (2022); Public Service Act (2020); Official Information Act 1982 and the Crown Entities Act (2004) as they apply to Te Aka Whai Ora
• Experience in leading transformational systems change with respect to implementing Te Tiriti o Waitangi
• Experience in leading projects / initiatives which give effect to Te Tiriti o Waitangi
• An understanding of Te Tiriti principles and frameworks, particularly as they apply in healthcare settings
• Willingness to personally take a stand for equity and anti-racism
• Knowledge and experience in applying Mātauranga Māori and Kaupapa Māori approaches
• Credibility and experience in creating respectful and meaning full working partnerships
• Ability to maximise the quality and contributions of individuals and teams to achieve the organisation's vision, purpose and goals
• Previous experience in applying critical thinking and using sound judgement to develop options and provide sound advice
• Demonstrated experience in a medium to large complex organisation, or other government agency
• Advanced skills in the MS Office Suite with special emphasis on Outlook, SharePoint & Microsoft Teams
• Excellent organisational skills along with the ability to think ahead, use initiative, establish priorities and meet deadlines whilst preserving the highest levels of accuracy and confidentiality

The COVID-19 Policy groups sit within the System Strategy and Policy Directorate. Our work is both challenging and highly compensateing, and unlike many policy functions, you will often see the result of your advice the next day rather than over weeks or months.

As a manager in our group, you may find yourself leading advice on the government’s overall strategy for eliminating COVID-19 and re-opening our borders, designing policies to improve the scanning of QR codes, adherence to the border testing regime, or leading our response to real-time threats resulting in Alert Level and QFT... changes. this function will test your capability to lead and motivate your team to provide advice that can be required under tight time frames. The prosperous candidate will not just have great analytical and team leadership abilities expertise, but also excellent emotional intelligence.

You’ll have knowledge and practice of the integral function that policy professionals play in providing Ministers’ free and frank advice.

You’ll also demonstrate your capability to write as well as critique high-quality public policy advice, effectively manage stakeholder relationships, commission work clearly, support your team to deliver in tight time-frames, and provide effective leadership abilities in a fluid and changing environment.

You will need to demonstrate a solid knowledge of Te Tiriti, as we strive to ensure equity considerations remain at the heart of all our policy advice.

The Global Health Group is recruiting for a Programme Manager Polynesian Health Corridors. This is a two year fixed-term function. The programme is funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT) and managed by the Ministry of Health. Information technology aims to strengthen existing linkages between the New Zealand health system and those in the Cook Islands, Niue, Tokelau, Tonga, Tuvalu and Samoa. The programme has played a key function in supporting high priority areas such as vaccine roll-out and pandemic preparedness. These areas will continue to be important, however there are now opportunities to grow the programme to meet priorities identified by the countries.

To be prosperous in this function, you will have expertise and practice in working with Pacific Island countries... and/or the New Zealand health system, as well as advanced expertise and practice of programme management.
