Climate & Environmental Reporter...
Want to inform and educate Houstonians – and all Texans – about weather extremes, pollution and environmental injustice, all while taking advantage of best-in-class digital storytelling tools?
Job Description: The Houston Chronicle – named the state’s best news organization by the Texas Managing Editors four years running – is seeking a versatile Climate & Environmental Reporter to take on everything that America’s fourth largest city and all of Texas can dish out, including coverage of hurricanes, floods, pollution, wildfires, water quality issues and development’s encroachment on ecosystems. This role will collaborate with an award-winning team of visual and data-visualization journalists, as well as other beat reporters and editors, to produce journalism that serves our growing number of subscribers and helps attract new ones.
What will you do?
• Be the Chronicle’s lead reporter covering all things environment, environmental injustice, climate and weather.
• Produce a steady drumbeat of content, from quick-hit stories about why Houston’s skies might be consistently smoggy, for example; to detailing environmental injustices in communities in Greater Houston; to larger projects that explain how infrastructure and development initiatives will impact the environment and the region.
• Collaborate with the Hearst Texas DevHub, our award-winning team of data-visualization journalists, and the Texas PubHub, our award-winning team of print designers.
• Work with the Chronicle’s audience team to identify trending environmental topics and respond to reader demands in real time.
• Through writing and visual storytelling, translate technical elements of climate, environmental and science reporting to non-technical, everyday readers.
• Be our news organization’s face of environmental coverage on multiple storytelling platforms: website, traditional print, audio and video.
What will it take to be successful?
Our newsroom specializes in reporting that educates, entertains, holds power accountable and forces change. The environmental beat presents tremendous opportunities to do all of the above.
You must …
• Be goal-oriented, aiming to produce journalism that not only captivates readers on A1, but has an impact digitally.
• Be able to juggle multiple stories at one time: quick hits, takeaways, weekend enterprise and long-term projects/investigations.
• Have 5 to 10 years as a reporter with a track record of deciphering complicated subjects. Experience as an environmental/climate or science writer is strongly preferred – but not required.
• Be a team player, collaborating with government and business reporters who also cover environmental issues.
• Have a working knowledge of state and federal open-records laws to pry open the vault on environmental stories that governments want to bury.
• Have a working understanding of social media and its ability to bring more readers to your journalism.
