Job Description

About the Role

The Huntington seeks a proven and collaborative fundraising professional to serve in the role of Assistant Vice President for Advancement (AVP). The AVP will join a donor-centered, and data driven productive fundraising program at an exciting time as The Huntington enters its second year of a five-year strategic plan and seeks to embark on several major capital and programmatic projects. The AVP will be an integral member of the Advancement's Division senior staff.

Reporting to Vice President for Advancement and External Relations Randy Shulman and serving as a key advisor and strategist on major and principal giving, the AVP will play a significant role in the design and implementation of strategies that support securing major gifts. The AVP will manage a Major Gifts team and work alongside a team of highly productive fundraisers. The AVP will also collaborate with staff responsible for donor engagement, stewardship, and prospect research. The AVP will focus on broadening the donor base and major gift pipeline and personally manage a select portfolio of prospects and donors, and work with organization-wide staff partners when appropriate to engender support for high priority projects.

The Huntington seeks an AVP with at least seven years of demonstrated leadership in fundraising and management. In addition to a track record of closing major/principal gifts, the ideal candidate must possess strong managerial, strategic planning, and motivational skills, a keen understanding of best practices in cultural organization/higher education or closely related organizational fundraising, adherence to performance metrics and accountability, as well as comprehensive knowledge of major advancement functions The ideal candidate will be a self-assured, results-oriented individual who leads by example with a collegial and accessible style. Superb judgment, excellent written and oral communication skills, intellectual rigor and curiosity, and the ability to formulate creative cultivation plans are critical AVP attributes. A bachelor's degree is required; an advanced degree is preferred.

Essential Duties

Strategic Leadership:

Under the direction of the Vice President, innovative joint leadership of the Division's frontline major gift program and advise and collaborate in strategic planning.
• Serve as a trusted partner to the vice president and occasionally with the president, and as an Advancement collaborator when appropriate with other staff including Divisional Directors, VPs, curatorial staff, and other staff throughout the organization. Occasionally represent and stand in for the vice president.
• Formulate productive cultivation plans, solicitation strategies, and stewardship efforts to maximize the lifetime engagement and support of the major supporters and ensure that they feel actively and meaningfully engaged.

Prospect Strategy, Fundraising, and Stewardship:
• The AVP is expected to raise funds each year from their own portfolio while assisting other frontline fundraisers to identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward their own donor portfolio.
• Manage a select portfolio of major and principal gift prospects through identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship cycles; forge relationships with a diverse population that will lead to gifts; set a personal example of frontline fundraising success for the Advancement team; monitor and report on progress of donor-related activities and gift solicitations.
• Oversee the preparation of a portion of divisional funding proposals, talking points and strategies, assessments of potential support, briefings for the vice president, senior officers, and volunteer leadership, and stewardship reports for assigned prospects; ensure that all interested parties are involved in key efforts focused on specific prospects; document all substantive prospect contacts.
• Serve as a resource and role model to staff on matters of prospect strategy and offer innovative approaches and techniques rely on experience in the field and remain current with evolving trends in philanthropy.
• Take on assigned special projects such as coordinating efforts to produce the occasional Huntington Momentum donor magazine, helping to draft narrative for quarterly board reports, and or The Huntington's own Annual Report.

Program Elevation:
• Provide leadership and professional insights to expand The Huntington's donor base, both for established and beyond traditional pools of support, and increase financial commitments when possible and appropriate.
• Utilize data-informed methods for decision making and the timely evaluation of individual donor strategy and program forecasting; maintain awareness of economic, social, and political trends that may affect giving; make recommendations to aid in the recalibration of strategies and plans accordingly.
• Nurture a culture of personal accountability, innovation, creativity, and growth in philanthropy in a highly engaged intellectual community.
• Work in partnership with gift planning staff to identify key blended gift prospects.
• Work with Senior Vice President to identify donors/prospects who might represent viable candidates for appointment/election to volunteer leadership roles.

Staff Management:
• Oversee major gifts team that understands and respects The Huntington's unique culture; and work closely with donor engagement and prospect management/prospect research staff.
• Promote a high-performance environment of achievement. Work with direct reports to set mutually agreed upon, well-defined, and measurable goals. Ensure that individuals have a sense of responsibility and ownership for the organization's successful outcome.
• Maintain a leadership style that is open and fluid, and capable of inspiring, empowering, and motivating staff. Foster a work environment that supports innovative ideas and risk-taking, builds confidence, encourages interaction and teamwork, and promotes diversity.

Candidate Requirements and Experience

Knowledge, skills, and abilities:
• A true appreciation for the Humanities, Botany, Science, and Art. A demonstrated commitment and understanding of Huntington history, mission, achievements, and aspirations, and the ability to effectively articulate organizational vision, uniqueness, and relevance.
• The intellectual curiosity and desire to deeply engage in Huntington "campus life" and its extended community, and demonstrate a commitment to diversity, intercultural understanding, inclusive excellence, and engagement.

• The political savvy to navigate a complex Huntington community; the desire and ability to build bridges and strong collaborative relationships with all members of an operation across the enterprise and a diverse body of constituents.
• The credibility, maturity, and sound judgment required to effectively assist in the cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of key prospects and donors.
• Ability to combine strategic planning and project management skills in identifying, analyzing, developing, and implementing short- and long-term strategies, approaches, and metrics.

Experience:
• Bachelor's degree required.
• A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible fundraising and managerial experience in advancement, preferably within the Humanities/Arts/higher education, large nonprofit, or similar.
• Considerable experience with public speaking and presentations.
• Must be proficient in Microsoft Office and Google Suite.
• Experience with The Raiser's Edge and internet search skills strongly preferred.

Working Conditions
• Normal office environment. Much of the work is performed on a personal computer.
• Must be available to work evenings and weekends for organizational events and activities.
