Job Summary:
The GISCartographer\Analyst\Map Maker coordinates the creation and maintains quality control of cartographic and other illustrations for project managers. This individual performs spatial analyses of data and creates spatial analytical graphics using geographic information systems and other digital methods.
Responsibilities:

The Mapping Engineering team develops systems and tools that are used to create, store and distribute map data. This includes but is not limited to UIs, data pipelines, data storages, backends, and SDKs. Through its visionary leadership and high impact staff, the Natural Areas Conservancy (NAC) champions urban natural areas in New York City and across the nation through innovative research, partnerships, and advocacy. We increase the health and resilience of urban forests and wetlands, catalyze connections between people and nature, and strengthen the environmental workforce.
Started in 2012, the Natural Areas Conservancy is the first park conservancy dedicated exclusively to New York City’s natural areas–20,000 acres across all five boroughs. Since 2019, we have also worked on a national scale, leading a network of representatives from cities across the U.S. to strengthen research, information sharing, and communication efforts to enhance the field of urban forest management.
We want all people to feel welcomed, inspired by, and connected to the natural world.
Position Overview
Since 2017, NYC Parks and the Natural Areas Conservancy (NAC) have partnered on the Citywide Trails Program to work on achieving the vision of a healthy accessible and enjoyable trail experience for all New Yorkers. The NAC has also worked closely with the Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Parks Conservancy (JBRPC) to increase trail management, activation and community engagement on nature trails throughout Jamaica Bay and the Rockaways since 2016. Some trails are in need of rehabilitation to mitigate erosion, while in other places networks of social trails (called desire lines) are promoting damage to natural resources and should be closed to restore a healthy forest. Trail Mapping Interns will work in close partnership with NAC, NYC Parks, JBRPC, and National Park Service (NPS) to collect trail condition data at Floyd Bennett FIeld in Brooklyn, NY, to help inform future management and restoration plans. Training will be provided on using the GPS mapping equipment, trail navigation, plant identification and data collection.
The NAC is offering two (2) Trails Mapping Intern positions, which are available only to enrolled or recently graduated students in any CUNY college (two year post graduation).
Major Responsibilities
The role of Trail Intern will report to the Trails Operations Manager. This position will be 80% field and 20% office-based with tasks including:
• Working independently to contribute to accurate data collection of trail networks and features through ArcGIS Online
• Reporting promptly to field sites or reporting locations
• Communicating any issues associated with the project or transportation to supervisors
• Accurately navigating to study areas using a GPS and trail maps
• Assisting in data entry and analysis as needed
Identifying flora present in NYC natural areas
• Working outdoors for long hours in NYC natural areas (forests, wetlands, and grasslands)
• Participating in professional development activities and group stewardship events offered
• Interacting with staff and the public in a courteous and professional manner
Required Skills/Qualifications
• Current CUNY student or recent graduate (graduated Spring 2022 or later)
• Ability to walk up to 6 miles a day while carrying GPS mapping equipment that can weigh up to 20 lbs
• Positive and collaborative attitude to work in remote locations in varying weather conditions
• Passion for the environment and outdoor recreation
• Excellent organizational, analytical, and written communication skills
• Demonstrated coursework in ecology, biology, arboriculture, horticulture, or other related fields

JOB LOCATION:
The Trail Mapping Intern position will report directly to Floyd Bennett Field, Brooklyn, NY . Please note that this position is 80% outdoors and 20% office based out of the NYC Parks Forest Restoration field office : 1001 Queens Plaza South; Long Island City Queens, NY 11101.
During this internship there will also be stewardship events planned at sites that can be located in all five boroughs of New York City (Manhattan, Queens, the Bronx, Brooklyn, and Staten Island), but that are accessible via public transportation.

Selected NAC exchange participants must also be available throughout the week of Sunday, June 16th - Sunday, June 23rd to guide LLNPP interns during their exchange trip to New York City.

We increase the health and resilience of urban forests and wetlands, catalyze connections between people and nature, and strengthen the environmental workforce.
Started in 2012, the Natural Areas Conservancy is the first park conservancy dedicated exclusively to New York City’s natural areas–20,000 acres across all five boroughs. Since 2019, we have also worked on a national scale, leading a network of representatives from cities across the U.S. to strengthen research, information sharing, and communication efforts to enhance the field of urban forest management.

Position Overview
Since 2017, NYC Parks and the Natural Areas Conservancy (NAC) have partnered on the Citywide Trails Program to work on achieving the vision of a healthy accessible and enjoyable trail experience for all New Yorkers. The NAC has also worked closely with the Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Parks Conservancy (JBRPC) to increase trail management, activation and community engagement on nature trails throughout Jamaica Bay and the Rockaways since 2016. Some trails are in need of rehabilitation to mitigate erosion, while in other places networks of social trails (called desire lines) are promoting damage to natural resources and should be closed to restore a healthy forest. Trail Mapping Interns will work in close partnership with NAC, NYC Parks, JBRPC, and National Park Service (NPS) to collect trail condition data at Floyd Bennett FIeld in Brooklyn, NY, to help inform future management and restoration plans. Training will be provided on using the GPS mapping equipment, trail navigation, plant identification and data collection.
The NAC is offering two (2) Trails Mapping Intern positions, which are available only to enrolled or recently graduated students in any CUNY college (two year post graduation).
Major Responsibilities
The role of Trail Intern will report to the Trails Operations Manager. This position will be 80% field and 20% office-based with tasks including:
• Working independently to contribute to accurate data collection of trail networks and features through ArcGIS Online
• Reporting promptly to field sites or reporting locations
• Communicating any issues associated with the project or transportation to supervisors
• Accurately navigating to study areas using a GPS and trail maps
• Assisting in data entry and analysis as needed
Identifying flora present in NYC natural areas
• Working outdoors for long hours in NYC natural areas (forests, wetlands, and grasslands)
• Participating in professional development activities and group stewardship events offered
• Interacting with staff and the public in a courteous and professional manner
Required Skills/Qualifications
• Current CUNY student or recent graduate (graduated Spring 2022 or later)
• Ability to walk up to 6 miles a day while carrying GPS mapping equipment that can weigh up to 20 lbs
• Positive and collaborative attitude to work in remote locations in varying weather conditions
• Passion for the environment and outdoor recreation
• Excellent organizational, analytical, and written communication skills
• Demonstrated coursework in ecology, biology, arboriculture, horticulture, or other related fields
Preferred Skills/Qualifications
• Knowledge of NYC ecology
• Plant identification knowledge
• Trail management knowledge
• GIS experience
• Proximity to Floyd Bennett Field (link to location below) or access to a vehicle
JOB LOCATION:
