Title: R&D Director

Full-Time, Exempt

Department: Research & Development

Reports to: Vice President, R&D, Quality & Food Safety

Summary of Position:

Responsible for all aspects of the company's Research and Development functions. Position focuses on coordination of R&D activities on a variety of products and projects based on internal needs and initiatives and external requests. Create, inspire, and develop new creations for line extensions that are within the company’s capabilities by staying on top of consumer trends. As a member of the Senior Leadership Team, delivers creativity and high standards of procedures and goals to the organization.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities
• Manage all necessary channels of communications in order to facilitate customer needs. Create a culture of urgency within the R&D Department.
• Ensure maintenance of lab equipment is up to date.
• Coach, mentor and develop the R&D staff.
• Develop new products to help keep us on the cutting edge and a leader in the industry.
• Meet and work with customers on new product ideas and concepts.
• Manage New Product Development (NPD) projects from concept to commercialization, including the stage gate process.
• Monitor the market for new seasonal items, consumer trends and competitor actions within the consumer packaged goods ‘CPG’ space.
• Collaborate cross-functionally with Purchasing, Operations and Marketing, to gain buy-in on innovation projects and long term planning.
• Work as a technical liaison between Sales and Customers.
• Work side by side with Bake’n Joy customers’ Culinary and Innovation teams to co-develop products based on our core competencies.
• Create innovation review session with cross-functional team members.
• Manage ideation sessions to inspire cross-functional team members in NPD.
• Provide our customers with menu solutions; assist with menu development.
• Work with Purchasing Department on Vendor Approval and Sourcing Alternate Raw Materials.
• Work with vendors evaluating new ingredients.
• Stay current with all government regulations to ensure company compliance.
• Stay current with industry technology and standards via membership in professional organizations. (Institute of Food Technologists, American Association of Cereal Chemists.) Attending seminars, reading trade journals, and meeting with vendors.
• Coordinate regulatory NPD documentation including nutritional, label, specification, QA specification, new product forms.
• Maintain updates to formulas in ERP system.
• Work on Product Improvement Opportunities with short and long term benefits including cost savings or efficiencies in operations.
• Interface with all relevant departments to reach shared objectives and corporate goals.
• Communicate consistently to all staff, providing information necessary for them to effectively perform their responsibilities.
• Communicate all corporate objectives to all department staff hold meetings on a regular basis.
• Be a resource for operation associates for opportunities regarding food safety and quality.
• Perform other tasks and functions as required by the VP of R&D, Quality & Food Safety.
• Understand all safety rules, procedures, and follow them at all times.

Job Requirements:
• Bachelor’s Degree in Food Technology, Culinary Nutrition, Bakery Science or Related field.
• Minimum 5-10 years’ industry experience within Bakery manufacturing or functional ingredient processing.
• Experience with successful development and launch of a new product.
• Proven leadership skills through direct supervision and/or Project Team Lead.
• Effective oral and written communication skills; ability to speak clearly and persuasively in positive or negative situations; active listener.
• Ability to effectively work in a fast-paced environment.
• Analytical - Uses intuition and experience to complement data.
• Technical Skills – Have a high level of culinary and baking talent, with ability to pursue training and development opportunities; and strives to continuously build knowledge and skills while sharing expertise with others.
• Safety and Security - Observes safety and security procedures; Uses equipment and materials properly.
• Ability to lift, move and carry up to 50lbs.

Joy Cone Company’s Hermitage Cookie & Wafer Facility manufactures cookies, inclusions, and wafers for use as an ingredient by ice cream and desert manufacturers across North America and around the world. The facility has a range of operator positions that are responsible for every step of the manufacturing process from dough mixing, through baking and packaging. Positions include:
• Dough Mixer Operator, Oven Operator,Line Attendant/Inspector
• Rotary Molder Operator, Crème Mixer Operator,Wrapper Operator
• Sheeter Operator, Capper Operator,Packaging Operator

Team members of the facility start in a designated position at hire and then are cross-trained throughout the facility to become competent in various operator positions. Responsibilities shared among positions include:
• Overseeing, operating, and adjusting equipment in area of responsibility
• Operating within standard operating procedures and job safety requirements
• Performing product quality checks throughout the manufacturing process to ensure product is produced within defined specifications
• Monitor product quality to ensure unacceptable product is not packaged
• Performing cleaning and sanitation of all production equipment
• Completing set-up, tear-down, and changeover of equipment when needed
• Completing accurate production records for quality and food safety attributes
• Assisting other positions as needed

Requirements include:
• Ability to perform repetitive tasks up to 12 hours per day
• English comprehension skills
• Basic computer literacy skills
• Ability to assist maintenance in maintaining mechanical operation of equipment
• Ability to lift/push/pull up to 50 lbs. on an occasional basis
• Ability to stoop, kneel, climb or squat on a frequent basis
• Ability to use hands to grip, pinch, handle, reach, or feel on an occasional basis
