Dining Critic – Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel/ jsonline.com , part of the USA TODAY NETWORK-Wisconsin, is seeking a dining critic to cover the region’s vibrant food scene.

The exceptional candidate will be passionate about local food culture and have a solid grasp of dining criticism, the ability to spot trends, and will recognize food as entertainment and culture.

The critic will have a vision for dining coverage and help us continue to shape it. The ideal critic also should understand our diverse food scene and be able to delve into multicultural cuisines.

Maturity and finesse in writing food criticism is imperative, as is understanding this coverage can be playful and fun. The ability to cultivate sources while maintaining a journalistic arm's length is required. The successful candidate is curious about food culture and how it’s changing.

The ability to engage with readers on numerous platforms is key. We expect the critic to be social media savvy – personally immersed on many platforms – and be willing to explore new ways to reach readers with dining news. Desire and aptitude to experiment with TikTok, Instagram and other emerging platforms to tell stories and share information is essential.

This role often requires working weekends, evenings, and writing breaking news on the beat. The writer will work with a solid features staff who cover entertainment, the arts, and lifestyles.

This role is one that continues to evolve as our dining scene and newsroom needs shift to meet reader interests. Don’t think we’re just brats and beer here. You’ll find everything from Ethiopian and Hmong to great barbecue, and escargot on menus.

Responsibilities
• Write regular restaurant reviews and other food and beverage criticism, from food trucks to fine dining.
• Ability to build a brand.
• Strong ethics and principles of fairness and honesty.
• Ability to monitor and manage spending.
• Awareness of how to engage readers with meaningful content, acknowledging where they are and how to meet them there.
• Familiarity with using metrics to develop content.
• Must work with visual and trending teams to quickly capitalize on dining news and fresh ways to deliver it.
• The job can require travel around the state to explore and cover dining within the region.
• Personal interest in cooking. Do you know your way around the kitchen?
• Ability to speak Spanish or other languages is an asset.

Requirements
• Bachelor's or master’s degree in communications, journalism, marketing or related field preferred or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Minimum of 3-5 years of writing/journalism/newsroom experience.
• Must have required skills including social media, advanced storytelling, analytical ability, interpersonal skills, time management.
• This role requires a valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and the minimum liability insurance required by state law.
• Employment is contingent on passing a post-offer pre-employment background check, motor vehicle record check and drug screen.
