The Lansing region nestled in the middle of Michigan, is home to both the state Capitol and Michigan State University. Our sports storytellers must be entrepreneurial, willing to take risks and innovate their approach with every story to capture the hearts and minds of our highly diverse audiences.

The Lansing State Journal serves Michigan s dynamic state capital market, along with employees/families from some of the largest companies in the state and nation such as Michigan State University, General Motors, large corporate health care systems and major insurance sector members.

Entertainment includes Big Ten sports, MSU s Wharton Center for Performing Arts and a downtown ballpark home to a single-A baseball team plus abundant bars, restaurants, parks, trails and more. Lansing is also within easy driving distance of Detroit, Ann Arbor, Grand Rapids, Chicago and the beautiful beaches of the Great Lakes.

Responsibilities:
• Researches and writes columns that make an impact on the community, drawing new audiences and touching all platforms through a well-developed personal brand and distinctive voice. Acts as a leading watchdog for the community.
• Collaborates and connects with the community through storytelling and outreach (social media, on camera, forums, community leadership, etc.)
• Collaborates with team to provide all the appropriate elements for the story (i.e., photos, videos and graphics.)
• Provides thoughtful analysis of complex issues and produces sophisticated journalism with minimal direction.
• Promotes personal brand, the brands of colleagues and the institutional brand.
• Coaches and mentors less-experienced journalists.
• Provides great customer service, helping readers find answers and solutions.
• Performs other duties as necessary.

Requirements:
• Bachelors degree in communication, journalism, related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Experience with sports reporting, narrative writing,
• Experience developing a well-defined personal brand and fan base.
• Experience with advanced storytelling techniques on multiple platforms.
• Ability to produce top-notch revelatory journalism.
• Exceptional cross-platform storytelling skills.
• Exceptional core journalism skills (reporting, producing and editing).
• Self-motivation and self-direction.
• Advanced knowledge of social media and how to engage fan base on digital platforms.
• Photo and video skills.
• Effective communicator; able to get along with diverse personalities.

Enterprise Public Safety Reporter

The Lansing State Journal/lansingstatejournal.com, part of the USA TODAY NETWORK, seeks an enterprising reporter to cover public safety and the impact of crime on the Greater Lansing community.

We cover Michigan's capital city as well as East Lansing, home of Michigan State University and many small surrounding communities.

We're looking for a reporter who has court experience, is organized and able to track criminal cases and civil litigation in Michigan's court system.

The successful candidate will have experience with accessing public records, ability to analyze data, and will shape stories around the impact on Lansing residents and the Greater Lansing region.

The reporter must embrace our commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion and be relentless about including diverse voices in our storytelling. Video skills are a plus.

Our reporters use social media and LSJ events to connect with audiences and engage with the community.

• At least three years of daily journalism experience.
• Ability to write clear, compelling articles that engage our audience and to enhance your work with video and other digital storytelling tools as appropriate.
• Understanding of social media and its uses.
• Understanding of metrics and ability to adapt based on feedback from data.
• Ability to multi-task and excel under deadline pressure, using time efficiently in a 24-hour newsroom.
• Skill at collaborating in a cross-functional environment and adapting in a rapidly changing industry.
• This job includes some evening and weekend work.
• This role requires a valid driver's license, reliable transportation, and the minimum liability insurance required by state law.
