Responsibilities

Reporting to the Operations and Technology Manager, the Operations Associate will play a pivotal role in maintaining the daily operations of LAAW’s San Francisco office, while also providing in-person and remote support to LAAW staff. Working well both independently and collaboratively, the Operations Associate will partner closely with the Operations team to anticipate and respond to the needs of the office and staff as it relates to reception responsibilities, technology, and general administrative tasks. While LAAW’s office has been largely closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we plan to reopen to the public in fall of 2023. The Operations Associate will serve as the first point of contact for clients, vendors, and other guests.

The Operations Associate will be involved in many aspects of LAAW’s daily operations and office management, often being required to toggle between various responsibilities. This person’s responsibilities will include but are not limited to the following:

Office Operations & Maintenance
• Manage the front-desk and reception areas, serving as the first point of contact for guests, employees, and other visitors
• Perform general receptionist duties, such as serving as the back-up for answering and directing phone calls
• Receive, sort, scan and distribute incoming mail and deliveries, and manage outgoing mail
• Communicate with staff, as needed, regarding client visits and time-sensitive mailings and faxes
• Keep the office clean and organized, especially the kitchen, conference rooms, stockrooms, storage closets, and communal areas
• Order office supplies, stock supply stations and kitchen, and ensure all office equipment is functioning
• Assist the Operations and Technology Manager on special operations and IT projects

Technology Support
• Assist with ordering, unpacking, and organization of all technology and hardware
• Support existing staff and new hires with technology onboarding and account creation, training, and troubleshooting
• Serve as on-site point person for workspace set-up, conference room maintenance, and in-person coordination of hoteling desks

Requirements

LAAW maintains an office in San Francisco and candidates must be based in the San Francisco Bay Area. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, most staff (including the Operations and Technology Manager) work remotely, but the Operations Associate is required to be in the office full-time, which LAAW defines as Monday through Friday and 35 hours a week.
Compensation

Legal Aid at Work offers salaries that are competitive in the Bay Area public interest law community. Benefits include health plans, long-term disability and life insurance, 403(b) retirement plan with employer match and contribution, and generous paid vacation and holidays. There is a language bonus for bilingual client-facing staff members. As a unionized organization, LAAW believes in the importance of employees organizing to improve their working conditions. This position is included in the bargaining unit represented by ESC Local 20. The current negotiated salary scale for the position can be found here. We anticipate an estimated salary range of $52,000 to $58,308, depending on years of relevant experience.

Responsibilities

The Disability Rights Program serves hundreds of clients a year providing advice and referrals and representing them in efforts to resolve disputes directly with employers and at the administrative level with state and federal agencies. The Program has an active litigation docket, bringing individual and class actions in state and federal court. The team also provides technical assistance to community partners; engages in community education and works in coalition with other legal aid organizations to advance the rights of people with disabilities.

The Disability Rights Program advocates for and with people with disabilities who encounter barriers on the job. Among other things, it:
• Represents people with disabilities in litigation and pre-litigation matters;
• Provides individualized counseling to intake callers and clients;
• Supervises and mentors law students at the Workers’ Rights Disability Law Clinic to provide legal advice and referrals for workers and job seekers with disabilities;
• Conducts outreach and education to promote equality and reasonable accommodation in the workplace, and;
• Advocates for policy and systems change for people with disabilities.

The Program Director will oversee all aspects of the Program’s activities. The Director is responsible for:
• Developing strategy for the Program, in conjunction with the other members of the Disability Rights team and LAAW management, that articulates the Program’s goals and ensures that they align with those of the broader organization;
• Overseeing the Program’s litigation docket, including class actions, representative actions, individual actions, and amicus work, and articulating a clear strategy around which cases it selects for litigation and which it does not;
• Overseeing the Program’s collaborations with community partners and defining the Program’s overall approach to community partnerships;
• Overseeing the Program’s direct services work, including any clinics and helplines, and working with other Program units at LAAW to ensure that all direct services work centers the needs of clients and furthers the goals of the broader organization;
• Overseeing Program administration, including preparing the Program budget, coordinating Program projects, supervising Program attorneys and staff, hiring and ensuring supervising of law student externs, and assisting with the preparation of grant applications and reports.

Requirements

The Program Director position requires the Director to wear multiple hats: attorney, colleague, coordinator, leader, and mentor. Because the Program engages in a wide breadth of litigation and other legal advocacy, and interacts with a broad range of stakeholders, the ideal candidate would possess a wide range of skills and have a breadth of experiences.

• Work collaboratively on a small team of attorneys and paralegals.

• Provide mentorship and guidance to team members to promote the development of team members’ skills and leadership capacities.
• Investigate, develop, initiate and litigate enforcement and impact cases.

• Have the ability to self-start and undertake projects on one’s own initiative.
• Think creatively about legal and non-legal advocacy that supports the Program’s mission.

• Willingness and ability to travel within California, and occasionally to other parts of the country for litigation, speaking events, meetings, and conferences.

Candidates should have a J.D. from an accredited law school. Candidates must also be active members of the California State Bar or be willing to take the next California Bar Examination if currently a member of another state bar. Fluency in Spanish, or other commonly spoken languages from our client communities, is preferred. While LAAW maintains an office in San Francisco, candidates may be based anywhere in the state of California. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, extensive remote work will be required initially. Strong preference will be given to applicants with personal or professional experience working with impacted communities.

The Opportunity

LAAW seeks a Vice President of Programs and Litigation (VP) to join the organization’s Management Team at a pivotal time of strategic evolution and refinement. Reporting to the President and managing the Program Directors and the Paralegal team, the VP will play a crucial role in generating and implementing the organization’s programmatic priorities and strategies.

This position will oversee all programmatic work and the selection of tools LAAW uses to advance its mission. The VP will be responsible for directing LAAW’s litigation, policy advocacy, direct services, and outreach and education services. The VP will help to ensure that LAAW’s overall strategy and its programmatic activities address the most urgent needs of people with low-wage jobs, and will help LAAW articulate a unified point of view (across all of its programs) as to what those most urgent needs are.

LAAW recently underwent a strategic planning process. The VP will lead the programmatic work to realize LAAW’s newly redefined mission as it responds to emerging issues and changing landscapes over time. In order to help LAAW evaluate its progress towards accomplishing its mission, the VP will work collaboratively with LAAW’s seven core programs to identify indicators (both qualitative and quantitative) that will measure the organization’s progress while identifying new opportunities to maximize our impact.

A successful candidate must have strong leadership skills marked by the demonstrated ability to hold respect for others, to foster trust and collaboration among the program staff, and to value honesty and integrity. The VP will be flexible in their decision making, be able to actively listen and be open to new ideas. It is also essential that the candidate have the ability to make hard choices while working in a highly collaborative environment.

Key Priorities

Strategy and Innovation

The VP will lead the organization’s efforts to keep its finger on the pulse of key legal and policy developments impacting workers with low wages, recognize gaps in services for those workers, and identify areas in which LAAW may be best positioned to act to assist those workers. The VP will also work with staff to ensure mission alignment across all program areas and to prioritize the tools, target client populations, and partnerships that will best help LAAW advance its mission.

The VP will also recommend ways that LAAW can provide its services more efficiently, balancing the need for standardization against the need for flexibility.

In particular, and in recognition of the organization’s established track record of litigation successes, the position will be responsible for guiding and building the organization’s docket of high-impact, class action, and strategic enforcement litigation. While it is not envisioned that the VP will spend significant time litigating as part of this role, they must be deeply knowledgeable about finding, selecting and litigating high-impact cases.

Leadership and People Development

The VP will be joining an incredibly skilled and passionate legal team with a history of impact. This role represents an opportunity to work alongside a team of passionate advocates, providing them with mentoring, coaching, and development opportunities. Serving as a sounding board and thought partner, the VP will lead and support legal staff on strategy, case management, and budgeting. The VP will also mentor the legal team to help them further develop litigation, policy advocacy, and client counseling skills. Additionally, the VP will provide or coordinate trainings on topics ranging from litigation and policy advocacy to strategy development and program management. This person will partner closely with Management and staff to set concrete and tangible goals to measure impact and identify growth opportunities, both for staff individually and the organization as a whole.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will have a demonstrated track record of protecting and advancing the rights and well-being of workers. Of special importance is that they have deep litigation experience, preferably in employment law.

All applicants must be active members of the California Bar or, if currently members of another state bar, be willing to take the next California Bar Examination. LAAW maintains its San Francisco office but has shifted to a remote-first model. Candidates have the option of working in the office or remotely but must be based in California with the willingness and ability to travel occasionally.

The ideal VP candidate should have the ability to use creative approaches to develop litigation strategies that have significant impact on the lives of our clients and their communities. The VP must be familiar with all stages of trial and appellate litigation in both federal and state courts and be knowledgeable about securing court awarded fees in employment or other civil rights cases. Successful candidates will bring experience in program management and strategy development.

A skilled relationship builder and communicator, the incoming VP will bring the energy and emotional intelligence to establish effective, equitable, and impact-driven partnerships with staff and external stakeholders.

Compensation and Location

While LAAW maintains an office in San Francisco, candidates may be based anywhere in the state of California. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, extensive remote work will be required.
