Position Description

St. Mark’s School of Texas seeks an enthusiastic and hardworking person to work as a part-time assistant in the School’s makerspace during the 2023-2024 school year. The Makerspace Assistant would support the Makerspace Director in the day-to-day operation of the makerspace, fabrication lab, and robotics rooms located in the state-of-the-art engineering wing of the Winn Science Center. The primary responsibilities will be to help maintain order and organization of the spaces, oversee student work to ensure effective tool use and safety, and work directly with students to support progress on their projects. Ideal candidates will have experiences and/or coursework in engineering that provides familiarity with the engineering process and the tools and technology involved, from computer-aided design, coding, and microprocessors to laser cutters, 3D printers, and automated milling machines.

St. Mark’s students are eager and motivated learners, and they engage in a variety of creative engineering projects in the makerspace, whether for class assignments, robotics teams, design competitions, or independent projects. Each day in the makerspace brings new activities and challenges, so a strong candidate will be flexible in adapting to the needs of the day while making productive use of the time to support students on project work while maintaining organized, safe, and efficient workspaces.

Responsibilities
• Assist the Makerspace Director for 20 hours a week, mostly in the afternoon and after-school hours. Detailed schedule to be determined.
• Help maintain order and organization in the makerspace, fabrication lab, and robotics rooms.
• Support students during school hours as they work on projects in classes taught by the Makerspace Director. Depending on the skills of the assistant, this could mean ensuring safe tool use, helping troubleshoot flaws in code, demonstrating how to use equipment and software, or preparing materials for class.
• Oversee the makerspace during after-school hours as students work on class projects, robotics competitions, and design challenges. Ensure safe and proper use of tools and other equipment.
• Support the Makerspace Director in other capacities, as needed.
Experience, Qualifications & Skills
• Some STEM coursework is preferred. A bachelor’s degree in engineering or computer science is not required but would be a plus. Relevant professional experience will also be considered.
• Experience working with the tools and technology found in the makerspace, which includes laser cutters, CNC routers, mills and lathes, 3D printers, and a variety of power and hand tools.
• Ability to support and oversee students working on engineering projects that involve:
• computer-aided design
• microcontrollers such as Arduino, Raspberry Pi, or similar
• automated manufacturing tools such as CNC routers, laser cutters, 3D printers, etc.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions

Light Work - Exerting up to 25 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly having to move objects. If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for the Sedentary Work category and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated Light Work. Positions in this class typically include talking, hearing, seeing, grasping, standing, walking and repetitive motions, plus stooping, kneeling, crouching, and reaching. Relatively free from unpleasant environmental conditions or hazards. Office environment. Little physical effort required.

Required Qualifications

Work Study Employees must have and maintain satisfactory academic progress of a 2.0 overall GPA or better at Collin College. Some departments require higher GPA. Work Study employees must remain enrolled in at least 6 credit hours during the semester in which they have a Work Study assignment. In order to be eligible for a summer Work Study assignment, students must have been awarded summer Work Study funds and be enrolled in at least 6 hours at Collin College during the summer.
