Duties
• Serve as marine traffic controller monitoring vessels transiting within Chesapeake and Delaware Canal waterway.
• Direct all marine traffic, including permitting two-way traffic passing situations.
• Monitor safety and integrity of government-owned marine traffic control equipment.
• Receives radio messages from pilots or operators of vessels requesting passage through the canal.
• Maintains traffic control sheet, recording pertinent data required such as time of canal entrance and passage of control points, dispatching actions, and any unusual or significant occurrences.
• Maintains other data forms such as communication log, foreign vessel log, and log for recording 200 foot plus vessels.
• Closing the canal due to adverse weather conditions such as fog is a judgmental decision made, in most situations, solely by the dispatcher.

Extensive knowledge of various types of US Army marine vessels, as well as Navy, Coast Guard and various agency vessels and their characteristics, cargo handling capabilities, port capacity, and limitations of facility to accommodate certain vessels. Knowledge maritime rules of road, ship maneuvering, marine radar, vessel communications and the hydrography and hydrology of the Skiffes Creek, Warwick River and James River in order to direct marine traffic safely through the waterway and coordinate with other watercraft operating in waterways.
Skill in communicating orally using accepted marine radio communication techniques, verbiage and equipment to include, but not limited to, VHF bridge to bridge and telephone.
