Community Relations Specialists serve the Wikimedia Foundation, contributors and readers by supporting teams that collaborate with Wikimedia communities. We focus on collaboration and communication with communities about product development, user-facing product changes and roll-outs, and any kind of priority project with special needs for collaboration with Wikimedia volunteers. You can learn more about our baseline approach for working with Product teams on mediawiki.org.
You are responsible for:
• Regularly meet with staff working in the Commons and Wikidata areas to learn about and discuss designs and plans for their projects
• Communicate these plans out to the community in relevant channels, and monitor feedback
• Help the teams contextualize and understand feedback, and adjust plans accordingly
• When the workload allows: support the Specialists team by taking up occasional assignments for other organizational priorities as per manager's indications.
Skills and Experience:
• Experience using Wiki software.
• Good knowledge of Wikimedia communities' dynamics, communication tools and channels (both Commons and Wikidata experience, involvement or demonstrable deep understanding is required).
• Experience with hosting and/or participating in healthy, diverse conversations with Wikipedians/Wikimedians.
• Experience working with or participating in multilingual and multicultural online communities; passion for online collaboration and constructive public discussion.
• Good organizational and interpersonal communication skills, with an ability to communicate with key stakeholders in styles ranging from precisely detailed to clear and simple, depending on context.
• Quick-learning and flexible.
• Organized, efficient, proactive, able to meet deadlines.
• Emotionally mature and self-reliant; tolerates ambiguity and maintains positive, respectful professional relationships.
• Competence working in teams partially or totally remote, sometimes at inconvenient times.
Additionally, we’d love it if you have:
• Experience with Translate extension, Translatewiki, Phabricator, MassMessage.
• Experience with writing user-help documentation.
• Experience with advanced Wikimedia user rights (belonging to a steward, checkuser, VRT or other groups).
• Personal interest and investment in Movement Strategy and related conversations.
• Excellent written English and fluency with at least one other language.

As a technical writer, you will be working as part of a team to create and maintain educational material for a large community of free and open source software developers. Our technical community of staff and volunteers maintains and evolves MediaWiki and related software, and enhances the software experience for Wikipedia, Wikidata, and other free knowledge projects.
Our technical writers work in partnership with other teams and the community at large to prioritize areas of improvement, and then follow through on those priorities. You are required to become a generous and organized contributor on mediawiki.org and other wikis, and will support our efforts to introduce standards and best practices for technical documentation. Our globally distributed team works remotely, and so can you!
As a Technical Writer, we’d like you to do these things:
• Ensure developer documentation is clear, accurate and up-to-date and fulfills goal of expanding the developer community
• Produce high-quality and easy-to-understand documentation for a variety of engineering processes, API documentation, FAQs, user guides, standard operating procedures, etc.
• Work with teams and community volunteers to obtain an in-depth understanding of documentation needs and requirements
• Document new features, capabilities and other improvements in a timely fashion
• Create diagrams and illustrations as appropriate to improve readability and clarity
• Help expand the community of writers contributing to public documentation
• Communicate widely and frequently to a wide audience of staff, community members, and volunteers via mailing list, IRC, and wikis
• Share ourvalues, respect ourcode of conduct, adhere to ourteam norms, and work in accordance with all three
Skills and Experience:
• Demonstrated experience in technical writing for software or infrastructure projects and creating technical documentation for developers
• Ability to understand complex technical concepts and make them understandable for others
• Demonstrated ability to create clear and compelling visual diagrams
• Strong research skills (as there will not always be developer support for some of the issues that need to be documented)
• Strong interpersonal skills, with track record of modeling good social and development practices
• Creative and highly motivated to serve diverse, multilingual and international communities
• Comfort in a collaborative, consensus-oriented and open environment
• Comfort using a wide variety of communication/collaboration tools including wikis, mailing lists, and IRC
Additionally, we’d love it if you have:
• Experience using PHP, Python, Node.js, or other languages to build web applications is a strong plus

Summary...
Wikimedia is looking for a Principal Database Architect to join our SRE team to design, build, optimize and support the platform serving the world’s favorite encyclopedia to millions of people around the globe. Wikipedia and its sister projects are a globally distributed architecture powered strictly by Free and Open Source software. The stack has MediaWiki at its core, surrounded by an ecosystem of microservices in PHP, NodeJS, Python, Go and Java.
The Wikimedia developers and community continuously expand and improve the software powering the Wikimedia projects. The common step in this process is finding optimal ways of storing data and fine-tuning the code that interacts with data storage systems (including schema and query optimization).
We currently use MariaDB as our main RDBMS and Cassandra as the dominant NoSQL solution. We are interested in finding new and improved ways of utilizing the capabilities of the existing stack as well as researching and potentially implementing other similar products. To achieve these goals we are looking for a candidate with strong experience, both hands-on and in a consulting capacity, in designing, developing and operating large scale database systems with complex dependencies.

You are responsible for:
• Working with developers, SREs and other teams, providing guidance on optimizing queries, schema design and overall data strategy.
• Assisting at every step of the architectural design and development lifecycle of new services and making them operate at scale
• Designing, improving and operating the RDBMS and NoSQL systems serving Wikimedia projects
• Researching, testing and benchmarking new RDBMS and NoSQL solutions
• Responding to common database issues, following documented procedures
• Assisting in or leading incident response, diagnosis and follow-up on system outages or alerts across Wikimedia’s production infrastructure
• Mentoring peers in your areas of technical and operational strength
• Sharing our values and work in accordance with them
Skills and Experience:
• Deep knowledge of (Free and Open Source) RDBMS (MariaDB, MySQL) administration (good understanding of and experience with replication is essential)
• Deep knowledge of debugging query performance and schema design
• Strong programming language skills and experience designing and developing software using relational databases at large scale
• Familiarity with (Free and Open Source) NoSQL products (Cassandra, Redis, Elasticsearch, etc.)
• Strong requirement analysis and problem solving skills
• Strong English language skills and ability to work independently, as an effective part of a globally distributed team
• B.S. or M.S. in Computer Science or equivalent work experience
Additionally, we’d love it if you have:
• Experience working with SRE/Operations/DevOps teams
• Experience with shell and scripting languages used in an SRE/Operations engineering context (Python, Go, Bash, Ruby, etc.)
• History of automating tasks and processes, identifying process gaps and finding automation opportunities
• Low level systems troubleshooting and debugging (CPU/memory profiling, C/C++ experience, in-depth Linux knowledge)
• Experience with LAMP stack technologies (PHP/HHVM, memcached/redis, MySQL) - MediaWiki familiarity would be great!
• Some experience developing Free and Open Source software, or being part of an open-source community

The Trust & Safety Engineering Team at Wikimedia Foundation is looking for Staff Software Engineers to help build features that protect our users’ privacy and safety on all of our Wikimedia projects, including Wikipedia. This role is full-time, 100% remote, and global.
The T&S Engineering Team is a new, interdisciplinary product team developing tools that help our T&S staff and the volunteer admins they work with to enforce policy, procedure, and laws across our projects and communities. This includes some light data analysis tools and some enforcement tools.
The daily work will include contributing new patches or pull requests for existing features, generating requirements and prototypes for new features, estimating new work, collaborating with a designer, or helping a volunteer engineer get their code shaped up. The stakeholders will be Trust & Safety experts that cross disciplines from Legal to Security as well as all the users impacted by these topics.
Stopping harassment on our projects is a pillar of our Foundation’s strategy and planning for the future. This team will work alongside the Anti-Harassment Team, which has been around for a few years. This team will be focused on tools that help protect and empower the most vulnerable people in our communities. This is important, highly visible work.
Because of the sensitive nature of the tools we build, our work is highly collaborative and heavily tested. We interact with database administrators, security engineers, and other teams on a regular basis. We value communication, enthusiasm, and eagerness to learn as much as certificates or degrees.
We use open source tools as much as possible, and always open source our own work (check out our Github). PHP and JavaScript make up most of our code, but we value using the right tool for the job. Developers at the Foundation have autonomy and responsibility, and can have a large and immediate impact on the future of the site and the movement.
Responsibilities
• Develop, test, and deploy new features, improvements and upgrades to various systems and tools used by administrators and staff
• Work with Foundation staff and volunteers on software design, development, testing and evaluation of potential technical solutions

• Openness to working with a diverse and geographically distributed team
• Strong written communication skills as our collaboration largely happens online
• Bachelor’s degree in CS or related field or the equivalent in work related experience
