About the Department and Vision:
The Department of Contemporary Art at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, presents, collects and fosters access to and understanding of contemporary art. The Department advocates for the importance of contemporary voices in the context of a large, encyclopedic museum, continually exploring opportunities to create opportunities to hear the voice of artists. With an... eye on local, national and international artists and communities, the Department creates a varied program for a range of audiences, working closely with colleagues from across the institution.
The quickly evolving collection increasingly represents contemporary art in all of its iterations, transcending traditional boundaries and hierarchies of media, movements and chronology. As curators in the Department of Contemporary Art continue to shape the collections to better reflect the diversity of artistic practice today, they also seek to deepen and reframe the histories of art in our time, foregrounding narratives and perspectives the MFA has historically underrepresented. The department builds on strength to create distinctiveness, but also narrates new histories and -- in the spirit of contemporary art – generously advocates for new sensibilities and points of view.
Reporting to the Chief, Curatorial Affairs and Conservation, the Chair will be deeply committed to exploring the changing nature of art museums and enhancing their relationship to the public. The Chair will embrace and deepen the Museum’s core values, namely that the experience of our visitor is paramount. The Chair will lead a department charged with delivering an outstanding experience with contemporary art that has specific resonance to a museum committed to serving and activating its communities. The Chair will balance a commitment to research and scholarship with sustained audience engagement, committing always to stimulating conversation and engagement amongst supporters and the general public alike.
The Chair will champion the institution’s Strategic Plan and the Strategic Plan for Contemporary Art at the MFA, both of which deliver on its commitment to audience engagement and inclusion, with the goal of cultivating an organizational culture that fosters belonging. The Chair will be a core contributor to the Museum’s future, continuing to build and preserve its contemporary collection and to integrate the forward-looking contemporary art program throughout and beyond the walls of the Museum. It is a vibrant time in the MFA’s 152-year history, as all staff and volunteers actively work to make MFA Boston a space where all feel welcome. The Chair will lead a relevant and relatable program that welcomes diverse perspectives and ideas, dynamically engaged with the broad and deep historic holdings of the Museum.
The Ideal Candidate will be:
Curious, generous of spirit, reciprocal in relationships, engaged in both scholarship and the views of others in equal measure.
The Ideal Candidate will have:
• Intellectual vigor, demonstrated by a portfolio of engaging, thought-provoking exhibitions, surprising collection installations, and evident commitment to lively onsite and online programs, and publications that have advanced scholarship.
• Curiosity with the desire and evident ability to expand and reimagine access to the Museum’s collections for local and global audiences
• Clear commitment to IDEA (inclusion, diversity, equity, access), through projects, collaborations, hiring and management that fosters a culturally inclusive and welcoming environment
• An energetic and experienced leadership style, with the dynamic communication ability that engages staff, advocates, philanthropists, and diverse audiences
• Willingness to welcome and celebrate the MFA’s local community of artists and other stakeholders, as well as to collaborate with leading artists nationally and globally
• Eagerness to re-imagine and re-present Museum spaces as vibrant, welcoming social and learning destinations
• Committed to collaboration with others across the Museum – and in the community -- to achieve the best outcome
• Demonstrated experience advocating for and convening artists
Qualifications and Requirements:
• Advanced degree in Art History and extensive knowledge in art exhibition and program planning and production that have reimagined visitor engagement, with measurable results
• Seven plus years in a leadership role in the contemporary art field, with established contacts with national and international artists, collectors, dealers, curators and other museum professionals
• An inspirational leader with experience in hiring, training, coaching and evaluating staff who is committed to developing and mentoring the next generation of contemporary curators
• Experienced in planning and prioritizing projects and making decisions in a timely manner to move plans and objectives forward
• Considerable experience managing donor relationships
