This leader should embrace and elevate... the newsroom as the preeminent local media brand in the market. The opportunity is to accelerate our digital transition, leveraging a storied and high-impact newsroom into a sustainable news operation that produces accountability journalism, relevant service journalism and breaking news that is first and best on the most important issues to our local communities.

The successful candidate will be a talented news editor who can help draw the best work from our reporters, editors, visual and audience growth journalists. This person must be a thoughtful leader with experience in newsroom transformation, someone able to approach the role with creative, fresh ideas on how to serve a local audience that is as diverse as the country overall.

The leader should have a proven commitment to raising standards for diversity and inclusion both in news coverage and talent recruitment.

We are looking for a bold, accomplished business leader with strong communication skills, a sense of urgency and perseverance, and a leader who can drive engagement at all levels of the organization. The person in this position should be eager to collaborate with colleagues at all levels of the Herald organization and across the McClatchy enterprise.

The candidate should possess the ability to move the needle on community engagement so that it ties directly to local audience growth. Success in this role will be measured by the distinctive and audience-centric journalism produced by the Herald newsroom as well as audience and subscriber growth and retention for that differentiated content. This requires a command of audience analytics and knowledge of the tactics that deliver results, as well as a commitment to continuous learning and a desire to experiment, iterate and adjust across platforms as the news environment dictates.

Change is a central feature of a digital newsroom, and the next Executive Editor must be both confident and conscientious in guiding a motivated newsroom to always keep our community’s interests at the heart of our journalism.

Requirements:

At least 10 years of experience as a successful leader of a newsroom or large news team.
Experience working with news analytics to grow audience and drive subscriptions.
Experience building successful teams and experimenting with purpose to better serve our local audiences.
Experience as a multi-platform storyteller, with passion for the written word as well as video. Audio experience is a bonus.
Knowledge of Miami and South Florida, and the many communities served by el Nuevo Herald.
Spanish language skills strongly preferred but not required.

Core competencies:

The proven ability to lead, inspire, and convey knowledge to others and to work effectively with a wide range of colleagues in managing change.
Strong collaboration and interpersonal skills, including empathy and a superior ear for tone.
Comfort with a job that will be demanding, fast-paced, constantly evolving, and more outcome-oriented than task-oriented.
The ability to articulate and reinforce standards for ethics and professional conduct as well as journalistic excellence.
An interest in the science of readership and engagement and a zeal for understanding and using readership data to inform the editorial process.
A focus on ensuring that our content and staffing represents the fullness of our community and the diversity of the people who live here.
An interest in and aptitude for storytelling using a broad range of media, including the written word, video, photography, podcasts and other audio — and whatever comes next.
The ability to solve problems, innovate and adapt in service of the primary goal, which is to produce quality journalism that reaches and engages readers and subscribers and has an impact.
Entrepreneurial spirit focused on helping to identify and build new opportunities.
Enthusiasm for helping to get philanthropic and community support for the journalism we produce

This is a job for an enterprising reporter who is hungry to get into one of the nation’s most diverse and dynamic communities and find stories that matter. The successful applicant will have exceptional writing skills and an eye for connecting... the dots between personal faith, activism, and where it intersects with politics and community involvement.

The possibilities are endless:

The greater Miami area is home to one of the country’s largest Catholic dioceses, a historically rich Jewish Orthodox faith that thrives alongside Reform and Conservative congregations, and a large and increasingly politically-active Muslim community.

We have several mega Evangelical Christian congregations and a new Mormon temple, serving the more than 30,000 South Florida members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Notre Dame d’Haiti, a church built by the Archdiocese, is the heart of Little Haiti. And in Coconut Grove and Overtown, you will find Miami’s oldest churches, the AME and Baptist churches that were built in the late 1880s by the Bahamians who first settled Miami.

As South Florida has diversified, so, too, has its religious base. We are now home to several Buddhist temples, a large Hindu Temple and a growing number of non-denominational congregations that attract a younger generation, often millennials.

Covering religion in South Florida would be a rich experience, one that touches upon culture, history, politics and people’s faith. We can promise you it will never be boring and it will be an education of a lifetime.

If that sounds like you, come join a newsroom that has won 23 Pulitzer Prizes, including the 2022 Pulitzer for Breaking News for coverage of the Surfside condo collapse. At the Miami Herald, we put a premium on breaking stories first, investing in hard-nosed accountability journalism, and delivering elevated enterprise that brings to life our community, which is like no other.

We are part of McClatchy, a digitally driven company focused on innovation and experimentation, with newsrooms in 30 communities across the United States.

We are located in South Florida, not only a lively region for news but an interesting place to live, with beaches, the ocean, restaurants, museums, arts and neighborhoods where you can experience the variety of cultures that make this city a diverse gem.

This is a two-year position sponsored by donors from a wide variety of faiths in our community. The Miami Herald retains full control of the stories we publish.

In this role, we hope to:

Facilitate greater understanding of all local communities of faith, explaining both common goals and differences.
Bring greater awareness to the importance of faith in local lives.
Highlight work of local faith-based organizations and their leaders.
Report on faith-related themes in local religious organizations. These might include but would not be limited to:

Digital outreach by local faith organizations
Tithing / fund-raising in the digital age
How faith organizations are attracting younger generations
How faith organizations seek to build unity in a time of political division

Explore the challenge communities of faith face in an increasingly polarized and secular world.

In this role, you will need to:

Focus on stories and tactics that build readership.
Master engaging multimedia storytelling.
Demonstrate speed, competitiveness and SEO savvy.
Work well in a team environment.

You should have many, though not necessarily all, of the following qualifications:

Strong writing skills, excellent news judgment and a demonstrated ability to “see the story” that is going to matter to readers.
Ability to build source networks and bring a constant flow of story ideas.
Ability to work collaboratively to aggressively tackle stories.
Comfort with a job that will be demanding, fast-paced and constantly evolving.
Facility with data, public records, social media and shoe leather reporting.
Spanish or Creole language skills.
The ability to post breaking news within minutes.
Openness and enthusiasm to use alternative story formats, multimedia storytelling, and plug-and-play graphics tools.

Requirements

A college degree or equivalent work experience.
A minimum of three years reporting experience.
Proficiency with AP style and a strong command of spelling, grammar and punctuation.
Understanding of and adherence to professional journalism standards for fair and accurate reporting.
Commitment to representing the diversity of our community in coverage.
Must have reliable transportation, a valid driver’s license and vehicle insurance (at least minimum insurance required for the state in which you work).
