Atlas Search is a growing cloud service that allows users to execute complex search queries using the MongoDB Query Language. Our users are free to focus on relevance and data retrieval instead of the machinery needed to search data at scale.

Our team is building a cloud-based distributed system responsible for the core components of search including: data ingestion, performance, query language, query execution, and aggregation. This role is based in our San Francisco office

Ideally you will be:
• 8+ years experience in data management systems, specifically with a strong background in query processing and optimization. A Master's or Ph.D degree in a related field is strongly preferred.
• Professionally experienced with designing high volume query engines, such as a database or search system.
• Eager to shape the technological direction of a complex system and have the ability to lead this initiative through collaboration with others

This role can be based out of our New York City office or remotely in the United States.

Successful candidates will have the following qualities
• 10+ years of experience in data management systems, including extensive experience in query processing
• Experience with large code bases written in C++, Go, or another systems programming language. You'll need to trace down defects, estimate work complexity, and design evolution and integration strategies as we implement new and improve existing components of the system
• Significant background in database internals or building core components for data processing systems (including query execution, storage engines, autonomous tuning and workload optimization)
• Excellent verbal and written technical communication skills and desire to collaborate with colleagues, mentor fellow engineers and lead projects
• Track record of identifying problems, implementing solutions and delivering highly complex projects in distributed systems or databases

Position Expectations
• Identify, design, implement, test novel solutions related to data storage and retrieval, query execution, query performance, query language enhancements or distributed data processing functionality
• Research state-of-the art query systems to inform our design
• Leverage deep knowledge of the strength and weakness of the product and the industry trends to provide technical vision and direction
• Advise management on decisions related to roadmap, processes, architecture and design
• Work with other engineers to coordinate seamless changes in a feature-rich, large code base
• Work with other teams working on the core database, cloud services, enterprise tools, and support to coordinate changes or contribute to their projects

• In three months, you will have contributed to the design and development of a feature to be released to our customers

Cool things you’ll do

You'll be working alongside our largest customers, solving their complex challenges - resolving questions on architecture, performance, recovery, security, and everything in between. You'll be an expert resource on best practices in running MongoDB at scale, whatever that scale may be. You'll be an advocate for customers' needs - interfacing with our product management and development teams on their behalf. And you'll contribute to internal projects, including software development of support tools for performance, benchmarking, and diagnostics.

What you need

The ideal candidates should have strong technical experience in one (or more) of the following areas
• Systems administration
• Distributed systems
• Network administration
• Database architecture and administration

• Performance tuning and benchmarking
• Extra bonus points if you experience in one or more of: Java, Python, Ruby, C, C++, C#, Javascript, node.js, Go, PHP, or Perl

If you have an operations background, we prefer experience administering large-scale production environments, including hardware, operating systems (e.g. Linux, Windows), networks (including firewalls and load balancers), as well as cloud-based resources (e.g. AWS, Azure, Google Cloud Platform).

We're seeking a Software Engineer to join our Insights and Telemetry (InTel) Team within Cloud Platforms. The Cloud InTel Team is responsible for helping our users understand the health and performance of their MongoDB deployments and provide guidance on how to improve performance.
