Job Summary:
The Assistant Professor in Counselling role is an Academic position reporting to the Director, SWCC. We
are seeking a qualified professional clinician whose duties will include acting as the Training Director for
the SWCC’s Doctoral Residency in Professional Psychology (established in 1990), as well as a professional
who will work as an Assistant Professor in Counselling, including related duties.
The Acting Training Director, supported by the residency Administrative Assistant and the Training
Committee, will be responsible for coordinating the SWCC’s Doctoral Residency program. Related duties
will include: overseeing residency candidate applications, interviews, ranking, and selection; conducting
resident orientation; facilitating supervision of residents’ supervision of practicum students; leading
didactic training for residents; chairing the Training Committee; providing support and consultation to
supervisors and residents as needed; communicating with supervisors about search and placement
processes; communication with students about professional development and training concerns; and
conducting remediation planning for students as deemed necessary. Further, this position will include
responsibility for participating in professional accreditation processes, including providing applications
and annual reports to the Canadian Psychological Association.
As an academic unit that functions as a hybrid clinical training and practice site, faculty members within
the SWCC also maintain a clinical practice and must hold the qualifications and experience needed to
provide group and individual counselling and psychotherapy across a broad spectrum of student concerns
and to assess and treat a wide range of mental health and wellness issues. This position includes active
involvement in our training programs within an expanding interprofessional environment. The candidate
will be expected to supervise graduate student trainees and psychology residents in our Canadian
Psychological Association-accredited Doctoral Residency Program and to participate in regular unit
meetings and committee work.
Qualifications:
Appropriate Doctorate Degree in Psychology required
Active status as a fully Registered Psychologist (R.Psych.) by the Newfoundland and Labrador
Psychology Board is a requirement for the position
Knowledge of student mental health and counselling needs within a diverse post-secondary setting
Experience in supervising and teaching psychology trainees
Experience in counselling at a higher education site and/or working in a clinical team with diverse
theoretical orientations
Interest and/or competence in Equity, Diversity and Inclusion
Previous experience with administration of a psychology training program is an asset
The ideal candidate would possess interest and expertise in one or more of the following areas: LGBTQ+
support, academic counselling, multicultural competencies and Indigenous practices, advocacy, learning
exceptionalities, and/or provision of outreach services.
Salary is based on qualifications and experience in accordance with the Collective Agreement between
Memorial University of Newfoundland and Memorial University of Newfoundland Faculty Association.
