Over the last twelve years, Pristine Seas, National Geographic’s flagship ocean conservation program has helped to inspire the protection of 26 of the last wild places in the ocean, encompassing more than 6 million square kilometers of ocean. We are seeking a Director, Expeditions, Pristine Seas to support and scale our approach over the next decade to inspire the protection of up to 40 new places. Additionally, we aim to cultivate and expand a network of best-in-class partners to build a community of support for protected areas.
The Director, Expeditions will be supported by the Manager, Expeditions in planning, producing, and managing marine expeditions for Pristine Seas. This position serves as liaison between all departments and the Expeditions team to ensure that the goals and deliverables of the event or expedition project are met and executed.
Your Impact
Responsibilities Include
Marine Expedition Design and Preparation (25%)
• Oversee all planning, designing, preparing, and execution for up to four scouts per year and up to four expeditions per year. Travel required.
• Along with the Manager, Expeditions, act as the primary communicator, department lead, and supervisor of all contractor and staff-related expedition activities
• Along with the Manager, Expeditions, act as the primary liaison between Base Camp and field, implementing the organization’s procedures and guidelines
• Participate in Pristine Seas scouting trips to build partner relationships, assess expedition risk, and make arrangements for team members
• Report back to Base Camp on the status of relationships with our suppliers and partners
Marine Expedition Production & Logistics (25%)
• Along with the Field Specialists, supervise the Pristine Seas warehouse, gear, and equipment including Zodiacs, Hyperbaric Chamber, Compressor, etc.
• Along with the Field Specialists, supervise and act as point of contact for shipping and logistics partner (GAC)
• Along with the Field Specialists, supervise and act as point of contact for field communication partner (Resudox)
• Along with the Manager, Expeditions and the Expedition Leader, oversee the creation of the expedition schedule, team list/crew rotations, and logistics
• Along with the Manager, Expeditions, collaborate with the Expedition Leader, Field Specialists, and NGS Nurse to ensure safe operations and risk management

• Lead and organize daily on-board safety trainings, cultural trainings, meetings, briefings, and drills
