Job Summary

The Yard Coordinator is responsible for overseeing operations of a rail yard. This includes assigning duties to train crews, giving train crews direction on switching inbound and outbound traffic in accordance with the operating plan and ensuring cars are pulled and placed in the appropriate locations. The position oversees the arrival and departure of cars in their rail yard in a timely fashion. Moreover, the incumbent works closely with the Transportation Manager to supervise the safe and efficient movement of trains.

Major Responsibilities
• Lead yard operations as outlined in CN's operating plan
• Supervise and run the activities of train crews, utility conductors and cab drivers
• Work with Train Masters, Transportation Clerks, Crew Callers, Engineering, Mechanical, Customer Service Dispatchers as well as foreign railroads and outside agencies to manage their yards
• Comply with safe work procedures and practices and deliver a high level of productivity and customer service
• Work with foreign carriers and terminals to coordinate movement of trains and interchanges over CN territory
• Observe, counsel, and carry out operating and safety rules

Working Conditions
• The incumbent must be available to work irregular hours, as well as night shifts, weekends, and holidays when necessary
• The role is performed in a combination of office and outdoor environment in various types of weather conditions
• Due to the nature of the role, the incumbent must be able to meet tight deadlines, handle pressure, and stress

Training

The Yard Coordinator attends training of USOR in Homewood, IL or a designated location close to their assigned yard. The training relating to terminal operations is done on the job and facilitated by current Yard Coordinators, Transportation Managers, and Assistant Superintendents.

The Signals and Communications Apprentice (S&C) - United States (US) is responsible for installing, repairing, testing, and maintaining various signals and communications systems and apparatuses, including railway signaling systems, wayside information systems, and highway grade crossing protection systems.
Major Responsibilities
• Install, repair, maintain, test, and inspect signal systems and apparatus, including automatic blocks, traffic controls, train stops, train controls, cab signals, and interlocking systems

Successful completion of the classroom training is mandatory to work as a Signal Maintainer. Once qualified, the role is subject to promotion as a Signals and Communications Maintainer and protect seniority as vacancies arise.

Role:

A railroad communications technician is responsible for installing, testing, inspecting, maintaining, repairing, troubleshooting, assembling, and/or dismantling inside/outside communications equipment, parts, and related items. A headquarter location will be assigned and the technician will travel and work within assigned geographic area.

Duties and responsibilities:
The selected candidate will install and maintain fiber optics, cables, towers, antenna work, power plant, voice radio systems, telephone systems, inside and outside communications wiring, and microwave/radio site & wayside inspection systems, and terminate overhead/underground cabling and fiber. Role:
Conductors (Freight Trainperson) supervise train operations as well as move, switch, inspect, couple and uncouple cars. They prepare reports and at times, they deliver and pull customer goods.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Ensuring compliance with all train orders, signals, and railroad rules and regulations related to safety, operation and the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA)

Work location:

When Conductors are called, they may not know exactly when they will return. In the yard, shift assignments are based on seniority and shifts are normally 10-12 hours per day.

Training:
Newly hired Train Operators take part in several weeks of training which includes classroom instructions and field training in Homewood, IL. The training guides the new Conductor through the critical safety skills required to work on the railroad. Once the classroom training is complete, the Conductor will complete trips as a trainee with a crew to enhance his/her knowledge and skills. Successful completion of the training course is mandatory in order to work as a Train Operator.

The Conductor position is a unionized position. Wages, initiation fees, and monthly dues are required as outlined in the collective bargaining agreement.

Role:

Diesel Engine Mechanics (Machinists) perform inspections, major and minor repairs, overhauls and servicing on all types of locomotives.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Critical performance areas include the following but may vary depending on the location and circumstances:
• Inspect, service and maintain locomotives, in accordance with federal and company regulations, including changing oil or repairing, replacing, cleaning and adjusting parts
