SUMMARY...

The Associate Director, Beef Safety Research is primarily responsible for assisting in research activities for the beef checkoff’s beef safety program.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following essential functions. These examples do not include all of the functions which the employee may be expected to perform.
• Assist in the solicitation, review, contracting and management of safety research projects for the national programs.
• Review project reports for results and compliance to contracted outcomes.
• Assist with project budget management.
• With the program manager, assist in coordinating critical research meetings with outside stakeholders.
• With the program manager and planning committee, assist with the development of the Beef Industry Safety Summit content, speaker management, conference platform management, and on-site facilitation.
• Perform scientific writing activities including writing summaries of funded research projects, technical research articles, literature reviews and routine program reports including checkoff quarterly and end of year reports, evaluation reports, Monday Memo, etc. in coordination with other team members.
• Provide technical reviews of research projects for state beef councils; make funding recommendations as requested and manage research projects for state beef councils as requested.
• Serve as technical resource for internal and external audiences; provide technical service support and respond to safety-related information requests.
• Serve as a spokesperson as needed on beef safety topic areas.
• Assist in representing department at industry and professional meetings as needed; compile and deliver technical presentations for various meetings as needed.
• Serve as technical proofreader, help create technical content and update materials for www.beefresearch.org and www.bifsco.org.
• Travel is required up to 25%.
• Other job duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
• EDUCATION – Master of Science degree in Food Science, Food Microbiology, Meat Science or a closely-related field.
• EXPERIENCE – Must have demonstrated knowledge and leadership in the areas of meat science, food safety, experimental design and the development of applied industry research initiatives. Budget management experience and proficiency in Microsoft Office programs is desired.
• EQUIVALENCY - None
• CERTIFICATION(S) – None
• SKILLS- Excellent communication (written and oral), organization and time management skills are required. The individual must be a self-starter and demonstrate a strong ability to work on multiple projects in a demanding team environment with minimal supervision. Collaboration, integrity, personal ethics and the desire to be a “team player” is desired.

• Provides support in the development of educational programs and materials for NCBA members, state partners/organizations and other appropriate audiences.
• Supports BQA program and education efforts of state affiliates, beef councils, and industry stakeholders with an emphasis on Spanish language content development and training.
• Serves as a resource and presenter at affiliate and industry educational events and provides written Spanish language educational content as needed for state communication efforts.
• Serves as an internal resource on cattle production for staff education and stakeholder outreach in coordination with other internal staff technical experts.
• Provides tactical support to NCBA staff and producer leadership for the Beef Quality Assurance program.
• Serves as spokesperson for NCBA on appropriate issues, assisting with Spanish language communication efforts.
• Significant travel required – averaging 50%.
• Performs other job duties as assigned.
• Builds and maintains key relationships with outside educational institutions and resources, e.g., academia, extension service, veterinarian groups, agriculture organizations, financial related businesses, allied industry technical representatives, beef industry safety/quality assurance program staff, etc.
• Builds and maintains key relationships with internal staff teams and assists with education on cattle production and BQA related initiatives.
• Provide team support and collaboration on appropriate business and strategy teams.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
• EDUCATION – A bachelor’s degree in animal science or related field with an emphasis on cattle production.
• EXPERIENCE – A minimum of 5 years industry or related experience, can be concurrent with education.
• EQUIVALENCY - None
• CERTIFICATION(S) – None
• SKILLS- Must be a self-starter with ability to work with little supervision. Must possess knowledge and understanding of information transfer in agriculture. Must be fluent and literate in both English and Spanish. Demonstrated experience in new technology opportunities for Producer Education programs and initiatives. Must have a strong understanding of the production, processing and marketing segments associated with the cattle industry from farm/ranch to consumer. Must be competent in the basic sciences and have the ability to review and assess scientific literature and relate to practical applications in the industry. Also must be able to effectively interface with beef producers, the scientific community, meat science, extension, nutrition and veterinary professionals, allied industry, government personnel and industry influencers. Strong platform and presentation skills a must. Must have strong people, management, communication, and computer skills.
