Applicants should have a minimum of three years’ editing experience and possess a rich network of writers with diverse subject-area specialties. The right candidate will have knowledge of, and comfort with, the substance of policy—and the ability to weave that knowledge into compelling narratives and arguments. Those with writing experience, ideally for a general-interest audience, are also strongly preferred. Experience in podcast production is helpful.

The Director of Audience Development has responsibility for driving consumer print, primarily from direct mail, and digital subscription sales, primarily through our paywall, and expanding audience acquisition across all channels. The role reports to the Publisher. This position is responsible for developing and executing marketing strategy across our subscription and distribution products, as well as managing the metrics to ensure we are achieving our goals; providing team leadership; and collaborating with internal and external stakeholders, including: the Publisher, the CFO, the Director of Marketing, the Senior Engagement Manager, the product development and editorial teams, as well as the paywall service provider and the printing and distribution vendors. The key purpose of the role is to establish programs, practices, and communications designed to grow revenue from The New Republic’s print and digital subscriptions as well as our direct mail donations for The New Republic’s Donor Program. In addition, this role oversees customer service for all subscribers.

Here’s What You’ll Do:
• Develop and oversee innovative ways to increase sales and monitor all fulfillment and reporting costs, while increasing efficiencies that will lead to faster product fulfillment times.
• Monitor KPIs to gain insight into operational performance; use those KPIs to identify areas for improvement as well as risk and issues; and devise strategies for improvement and risk avoidance.
• Track and monitor changes to paid circulation, including detailed month-end reports by sales channel, making contingency plans where necessary to meet or exceed annual circulation-growth goals.
• Oversee all aspects of print fulfillment operations, working with our vendors, and product manage print and digital products for circulation; manage newsstand sales.
• Exercise discretion in negotiating vendor contracts.
• Oversee all audience flows throughout various platforms and back-end systems and have a strong knowledge about direct mail to support subscription and donation growth.
• Employ data analytics and data-mining techniques to identify and target at-risk audiences effectively; work to identify retention improvement opportunities and coordinate cross-channel implementation support.
• Establish and maintain high quality-control standards throughout all aspects of the product fulfillment, production, and reporting processes.
• Own Circulation budget and forecasting, manage overall expense budget, and work with CFO in tracking and monitoring circulation revenue.
• Supervise one staff member.
• Work closely with list vendors to increase revenue.

Here’s What You’ll Bring to Us:
• 10 years of circulation or operations experience
• Experience working with paywall or gating strategies for audience acquisition
• Strong record of creating and driving revenue-growth plans
• 10 years of experience managing vendors, including contract negotiations, and managing service-level contracts

• 4 years of experience managing and growing staff
