The department seeks a faculty member of advanced associate professor rank whose teaching and research interests speak to the political, social and cultural significance of journalism as an institution, profession and... democratic practice. The Nieman Chair is expected to be an active and engaged scholar-teacher in a storied journalism program established over a century ago.
The Nieman Chair is expected to maintain a robust program of research. The department welcomes applicants with a national and international reputation in a scholarly field that advances the practice and understanding of journalism as a publicly oriented profession. The department is largely agnostic to the field or method of journalism scholarship.
The J. William and Mary Diederich College of Communication includes majors in journalism, media studies, advertising, public relations, communication studies, corporate communication, digital media and theatre arts. The College of Communication facilities include a newly renovated second floor Student Media hub with digital and virtual reality television studios, audio studios, cross-platform newsroom and state-of-the-art television production room. The Department of Journalism and Media Studies is home to the journalism and media studies majors, the O’Brien Fellowship in Public Service Journalism and the Milwaukee Neighborhood News Service. The department maintains strong ties with local news media outlets.
Marquette is an urban Catholic and Jesuit university dedicated to principles of excellence, leadership, faith and service. The campus is in the heart of Milwaukee, the 38th largest (DMA) television market, and less than 90 miles from both Chicago and Madison, Wisconsin.

Duties and Responsibilities
Teaching graduate and undergraduate courses in areas of expertise and department need is also expected. The Nieman Chair position carries a 2-2 course load. The department welcomes applicants with diverse teaching experience. Current curricular areas of need include, but applicants are not limited to, television and radio news, research methods, sports reporting and advanced journalism skills, such as data journalism and other technology-oriented journalism practices.
The Nieman Chair also helps envision and organize lectures and symposia about journalism theory and practice in a democratic society. The position includes a graduate research assistant and significant travel and research support. The faculty member will also contribute to university, college and departmental committees as needed.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Ph.D. with four-seven years of college teaching experience. Demonstrated evidence of teaching effectiveness and advancing scholarship commensurate with the appointment to a senior rank with tenure.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
The Nieman Chair is a nine-month, tenured position and a doctorate in a relevant field and a strong record of scholarship and teaching that merits appointment at an advanced level is required.
