DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS...
Under the general direction of the department director responsibilities include planning, developing, installing, configuring, maintaining, supporting, and optimizing all network hardware, software, and communication links. This person will also analyze and resolve end user hardware and software computer problems in a timely and accurate fashion, and provide end user training were required. Work is reviewed through conferences and results obtained. On-call, after hours and weekend availability is required on an as-needed basis. May supervise other technical staff.
• Sets up users with access to the computer systems with proper security;
• Solves problems relating to hardware: printers, PCs, switches, routers, etc;
• Reviews system resources, performance and does maintenance;
• Works with end users to resolve network and server problems;
• Installs new network and server software and software upgrades as required;
• Tests network and server software to determine its usefulness and integrity;
• Recommends policies and procedures for systems and network access;
• Manages and administers all operating systems and their corresponding or associated software;
• Manages the Exchange Email servers as required;
• Oversees installation, configuration, maintenance, and troubleshooting of end user desktops;
• Installs and configures printer systems;
• Assess need for any system reconfigurations (minor or significant) and execute them if required;
• Ensures connectivity of all workstations;
• Writes system and security related programs involving administration of the network infrastructure as required;
• Works with users to resolve network and server problems;
• Tests network and server software to determine its usefulness and integrity;
• Reviews network security for problems;
• Makes recommendations on Hardware, Software and LAN/WAN integration;
• Recommends policies and procedures for systems and network access;
• Performs related work as required.
Bachelor's degree in computer science, management information systems, or closely related field from an accredited college or university and six (6) years of responsible experience in the administration of at least a 200 user network.
Additional related experience may substitute for degree on a year-for-year basis with a minimum of a high school diploma or GED
Microsoft Certified System Engineer and/or CISCO Certified Network Engineer certification may substitute for degree with minimum of high school diploma or GED.
• Knowledge of state-of-the-art technology and the capabilities and cost of hardware and software.
• Working technical knowledge of network and PC operating systems;
• Working technical knowledge of current network hardware, protocols and standards, including Cisco Switches and Routers;
• Proven hands-on hardware troubleshooting experience;
• Good understanding of the organization’s goals and objectives;
• Knowledge of applicable data privacy practices and laws;
• Strong written and oral communication skills;
• Strong interpersonal skills;
• Ability to relate technical information to non-technical personnel;
• Ability to conduct research into networking issues and products as required;
