We've heard Notion described many ways. It can be as simple as a blank piece of paper, making writing feel light and delightful. It can be as complex as a relational database that stores huge amounts of data. We sometimes compare it to a set of Legos (if Legos were designed by The New York Times). But at its core, Notion is a toolbox of software building blocks that let you manage your life and work however you find most useful.

And here's how the press has talked about us:

### So, what will you do as a Mobile Engineer at Notion?

- You'll work with the team to build new product features, focusing on the iOS and Android apps — such as a more polished typing experience on mobile.
- You'll build improvements to the performance, reliability, and polish of our iOS and Android apps. Think business critical pushes, like improving the startup time of our apps.
- You'll build and improve internal tools with simplicity and productivity in mind — for example, building a tool to ease deployment of new versions of Notion's apps.

### This might be for you if...

- You've built and maintained quality iOS or Android apps (ideally both!) that have reached a large audience.
- You can readily learn most technologies as you go. To you, technologies are about tools and tradeoffs, not an ideology.
- You care about the business implications of anything you build. You're not just going after cool stuff — you understand the balance between craft, speed, and the bottom line.
- You get excited about working on different parts of the stack. We’re a small team where people are encouraged to contribute across the code base.
- You're fluent in several of: Objective-C, Swift, Java, Kotlin, React, and TypeScript.
- Bonus: You're familiar with the work of computing and science heroes like Ada Lovelace, Douglas Engelbart, Alan Kay, etc.—and understand why we're big fans.

### FAQ

- What benefits can I expect?
- Top of the line health, dental, and vision insurance.
- 401(k) matching, to help you save for the future.
- New laptop/equipment of your choice.
- Daily lunch (on us!) and monthly commuter credits.
- Flexible vacation time.
- Team retreats twice a year — including plus-ones! Past trips have been to Hawaii, Tahoe, and Breckenridge, Colorado.
- Dog-friendly office 🐶

- Is this role only full-time? Can I work remotely?
- While Notion is working remotely during the COVID-19 crisis, we're a tight-knit team and would like engineers to work full-time from our San Francisco office in normal circumstances. We'll of course provide financial assistance for relocation if you'd need to move to the Bay Area

We've been working on this together since 2016, and have customers like Pixar, Mitsubishi, Figma, Plaid, Match Group, and thousands more on this journey with us. Today, we're growing fast and excited for new teammates to join us who are the best at what they do. We're passionate about building a company as diverse and creative as the millions of people Notion reaches worldwide.

Notion is an in person company, and currently requires its employees to come to the office for two Anchor Days (Mondays & Thursdays) and requests that employees spend the majority of their week in the office (including a third day).

About The Role

Imagine yourself in the 1970s or 80s thinking through how computing should look and feel for people who had never seen one before. That's what we're trying to do at Notion — make software that feels timeless, with the craftsmanship of German cameras, playfulness of Japanese toys, and mass appeal of Coca-Cola. We have no end of fascinating challenges that can only be solved by someone with innate product & UX sense, technical aptitude, great taste, and impeccable craft.

What You'll Achieve:
• Design product concepts that balance vision, craft, speed, and business potential.
• Craft every detail of new product features, from idea to UX to pixel-perfect execution.
• Run projects end to end with engineers to drive your vision to the ship line.
• Partner closely with our Customer Experience, Sales, and Customer Success teams to understand what each of our diverse user segments need, want, and love about Notion. Use this data and acquired intuition to prioritize, plan, and scope our product roadmap.
• Work with Marketing to devise new ways to tell great stories throughout the user lifecycle, and across our site, product, help guides and other channels.
• Create new patterns that are intuitive, practical, and convergent. Evolve our design system intentionally as we scale.

Skills You'll Need to Bring:
• You have well-rounded skills and experience to run projects independently end to end. 5+ years of working experience.
• You can create clear, intuitive, and visually appealing human interfaces. (UI)
• You can untangle vague conceptual problems, and have a sharp intuition for the most accessible mental models and flows, so users can immediately start gaining value out of the product. (UX)
• You care about the business needs, implications, and practicality of your designs. You don't get stuck on pretty UI or deep abstractions, and can balance between craft, speed, and the bottom line.
• You have strong beliefs, loosely held. You're a good listener who collaborates well with different stakeholders. You observe and internalize all inputs and feedback to help you reach an optimal decision.
• You like to tell stories using both words and visuals, and strategize the best way to make your point.

Nice to Haves:
• You've designed and built great tools with small teams in the past.
• You bring unique strengths and perspectives to the team. We're looking to build a diverse team where our skills and experience can complement each other.
• You can polish features in the codebase.** We love to hire designers who can code so there's less communication and hand-off cost with engineers. But this is optional, especially if you are super talented in designing the purest and easiest solution to hard product design problems, and rallying your teammates to execute towards it.
• You've experienced the pain of fragmented tools and information silos created by them, and have a strong urge to fix it.
• You're familiar with the work of computing heroes like Douglas Engelbart, Alan Kay, Bret Victor, etc. — and understand why we're big fans.

We hire talented and passionate people from a variety of backgrounds because we want our global employee base to represent the wide diversity of our customers. If you’re excited about a role but your past experience doesn’t align perfectly with every bullet point listed in the job description, we still encourage you to apply. If you’re a builder at heart, share our company values, and enthusiastic about making software toolmaking ubiquitous, we want to hear from you.

Today, we're growing fast and excited for new teammates to join us who are the best at what they do. We're passionate about building a company as diverse and creative as the millions of people Notion reaches worldwide.

About The Role:

Do you want to help define what data means at Notion? We are looking to hire engineers with a vision for what our data tooling and infrastructure should look like as we scale, and then to build and operate those systems over time.

You'll partner with teams all around the company to empower every function with data and insights. You'll help evolve Notion and the infrastructure it uses to make sure that decisions can always be driven by high quality data.

What You'll Achieve:
• You'll design and set up the foundations that enable

everyone

in the company - data scientists, finance, customer success, etc. - to effectively self-serve and leverage data. This can involve scalable ingestion infrastructure and tooling for data model, dashboards, query engines, experimentation and many other things!
• You'll articulate best practices around logging and ingestion frameworks and implement the changes to make those practices a reality.
• You'll implement monitoring and alerting systems to guarantee data quality and consistency.
• You'll determine the best ways to handle Notion's and usage patterns to derive insights and bring intelligence to product features like search and discovery.
• You'll create tools to enable the data science team to produce insights quickly, and help them apply and generalize statistical and econometric models efficiently across large datasets.

Skills You'll Need to Bring:

Team player:
• For you, work isn't a solo endeavor. You have worked cross-functionally to establish the right overarching data architecture for a company's needs, to build data ingestion (real-time & batch), and to provide guidance on best data practices for the business.

Data expertise:
• You have built and managed highly scalable data processing solutions (e.g. Spark, Flink), data lakes or warehouses (e.g. Snowflake, Hive), authored queries (SQL), used workflow management (e.g. Airflow, Luigi), and have experience maintaining the infra that supports these.

Thoughtful problem-solving:
• For you, problem-solving starts with a clear and accurate understanding of the context. You can decompose tricky problems and work towards a clean solution, by yourself or with teammates. You're comfortable asking for help when you get stuck.

Pragmatic and business-oriented:
• You care about business impact and prioritize projects accordingly. You're not just going after cool stuff—you understand the balance between craft, speed, and the bottom line.

Put users first:

Computers may be our most powerful tools, but most of us can't build or modify the software we use on them every day. At Notion, we want to change this with focus, design, and craft.

We've been working on this together since 2016, and have... customers like Pixar, Mitsubishi, Figma, Plaid, Match Group, and thousands more on this journey with us. Today, we're growing fast and excited for new teammates to join us who are the best at what they do. We're passionate about building a company as diverse and creative as the millions of people Notion reaches worldwide.

About The Role:

You'll lead the team responsible for crafting and improving the search and discovery experience in Notion. You'll work with the team to delight our users by building innovative products around full-text search, ranking, personalization, and recommendations. You'll play a critical role in ensuring that our users derive more value from the product as the size of their workspace grows. In this highly cross-functional role, the scope of your team will cover product, infrastructure and data solutions.

What You'll Achieve:
• You'll hire, challenge and retain a diverse, inclusive and highly effective team of engineers
• You’ll work with Product, Design and your Engineering peers to build and deliver on a longterm and impactful roadmap for search & discovery
• You'll cultivate an environment of technical excellence, predictable delivery and personal growth for your team
• You'll participate in shaping how the engineering organization works— you'll help develop our technical practices, recruiting and onboarding strategy, planning and prioritization process, and more

Skills You'll Need to Bring:
• You have managed search, ML, or data teams with a record for shipping high-quality data products. You nurture collaborative, supportive and challenging environments where engineers grow and do their best work
• You inspire others and are comfortable driving the vision for a nascent function
• You effectively communicate business needs and technical details to a diverse audience
• You have experience with designing, building and maintaining complex distributed systems (backend engineering, data infrastructure, search infrastructure or natural language processing/machine learning)
• You embrace cross-functional work. You proactively collect and prioritize user needs, build strong partnerships and deliver solutions that gracefully evolve over time

Nice to Haves:
• You have worked at a fast-growing start-up, a SaaS company or are eager to contribute in such an environment (being a current Notion user would be great!)
• You have hands-on experience building full-text search (e.g Lucene, Elasticsearch, Solr or other proprietary solutions), recommendation systems, large scale data solutions (e.g. Spark, Flink, Kafka, Airflow, Hadoop)
• You've heard of computing pioneers like Ada Lovelace, Douglas Engelbart, Alan Kay, and others—and understand why we're big fans of their work.

Our customers come from all walks of life and so do we. We hire great people from a wide variety of backgrounds, not just because it's the right thing to do, but because it makes our company stronger. If you share our values and our enthusiasm for small businesses, you will find a home at Notion.

Today, we're growing fast and excited for new teammates to join us who are the best at what they do. We're passionate about building a company as diverse and creative as the millions of people Notion reaches worldwide.

About The Role:

Millions of people use Notion — and this number is increasing every day. That means millions of people trust us to deliver a fast, reliable, and secure experience, and we value this more than anything. We want to keep earning trust, while also continuing to amaze our users with the tools they can build in Notion.

The Cloud Infrastructure team is a new team tasked with architecting, delivering, and operating the foundational cloud environment that powers Notion. As a founding engineer on the team, you'll work on the fundamental infrastructure components that all other teams at Notion build upon to guide Notion through the next few years of growth.

What You'll Achieve:
• Build vision and roadmaps for this team, including Notion’s strategy on provisioning, deployment, and containerization
• Partner closely with the broader engineering team to capacity plan and ensure an efficient and predictable cloud workload
• Partner with the security engineering team to harden Notion’s cloud environment
• Help drive large cross-functional projects, such as helping Notion achieve data locality in multiple data centers

Skills You'll Need to Bring:

Cloud Infrastructure expertise:

You bring multiple years of expertise in a few of the following areas:
• AWS cloud architecture / security group architecture
• Cloud efficiency / capacity planning / load testing / auto-scaling
• Infrastructure as code / terraform
• Networking / traffic / CDN / Gateway / proxies
• Identity and access management
• DevOps / release management
• Containerization, deployment, and config management

Startup mentality:
• You are comfortable navigating the fast moving, unstructured nature of a hyper-growth startup. You are self-motivated to add value and bias towards action. You understand the importance of setting the engineering quality bar for the long term success of our business, but are able to make difficult prioritizations.

Pragmatic and business-oriented:
• You care about business impact and prioritize projects accordingly. You don't just go after cool stuff—you understand the balance between craft, speed, and the bottom line.

To you, technologies and programming languages are about tradeoffs. You may be opinionated, but you're not ideological and can learn new technologies as you go.

Nice to Haves:
• Experience in scaling a hyper-growth startup
• Experience doing AWS cost optimizations
• Experience with implementing robust backups and disaster recovery
• Experience with multi-region failovers or multi-datacenter deployments
• You can lead a small team and multi-month project end to end with minimal management and cross-functional support
• You've managed, maintained, and monitored systems using Amazon Web Services, Datadog, Postgres, Redis, Memcached, and Elasticsearch.
