Our highly competitive program offers internship opportunities 3x a year to undergraduate students with at least two years of study, graduate students, and/or those... who demonstrate co-equal qualifying experience. NTI also welcomes applicants from university-sponsored internship programs.
NTI Interns play a critical role within each of our teams by working to advance our mission objectives while learning more about existential risks to humanity. Our internships are substantive opportunities where interns are deeply embedded into NTI’s teams, contributing research and analysis to ongoing projects, but do include administrative components as needed. NTI’s internship program prioritizes building skills and experience and includes structured professional development opportunities -- many intern alumni have gone on to have stellar careers in their chosen fields.
This is an in-person internship. We believe that the intern experience is most beneficial when conducted in-person, therefore, interns are required to work the majority of their hours in-office. Dependent on total hours being worked in the week, there is flexibility allowed for some work-from-home hours, as guided by internal policies, and with approval by the program lead.
Our interns work a minimum of 16 hours per week. The hourly pay rate for interns is determined by a tiered compensation structure based on level of education:
• $17/hour for interns with a bachelor’s degree or enrolled in a bachelor’s program
• $18.50/hour for interns with a master’s degree or enrolled in a master’s program
• $20/hour for interns with a PhD or enrolled in a PhD program
Our intern program provides Interns with paid holidays, up to 40 hours of paid sick leave (if needed), and up to $300 per month of SmarTrip® commuter benefits for public transportation to/from the office, as well as access to the building amenities.
NTI is registered to employ staff living in DC, Maryland, and Virginia; therefore, applicants must be residents of these states during the course of their internship.
At this time, NTI cannot accept applications from individuals who do not have a legal right to work in the United States and who do not hold residency in the United States (Maryland, DC, or Virginia) during the duration of the internship. NTI is not able to provide employment sponsorship for its intern positions.
The deadline to submit an online application is 11:59PM (ET), Tuesday, July 11, 2023. Please answer all questions on the application, as incomplete applications will not be considered.
Because of the volume of applications we receive, we cannot respond to individual inquiries, but will provide an auto-response to acknowledge receipt of your application. This is the only communication we can provide until the review process is complete. We will notify all applicants of our final decisions in early-mid August.
All Interns must attend a 3-hour in-person mandatory Human Resources Onboarding session in the D.C. Office on the first day of the internship, Monday, October 2, 2023, starting at 9:30am to 12:30 pm. The Fall 2023 internship session continues for a minimum of 10 weeks and will end no later than Friday, December 15, 2023. Your specific end date will be agreed upon with your supervisor based on your personal circumstances.
You should apply if you:
• Care deeply about the existential threats facing humanity and interested to work with some of the foremost experts in the world working to solve these problems; Excel at writing, researching, organizing, and communicating with internal and external stakeholders; Can balance being self-driven and a team player; Can commit to a minimum of 16 hours a week for a minimum of 10 weeks.
