About PLOS
PLOS is a non-profit, Open Access publisher empowering researchers to accelerate progress in science and medicine by leading a transformation in research communication. PLOS journals propelled the movement for OA alternatives to subscription journals. We established the first multi-disciplinary publication inclusive of all excellent research regardless of novelty or impact and demonstrated the importance of open data availability. As we continue to lead the way in making research content more open, we need to make it a system that's open for everyone. We are intentionally spreading our roots deeper, globally. We are actively expanding our globally distributed workforce and looking for candidates to broaden physical locations and expertise, and help us form meaningful connections with researchers around the world.
On the PLOS People Team, we help PLOS expand its impact on Open Science through attracting and developing talented PLOSians, and through guiding the conversation about culture. On the team, we each develop generalist capacity while holding accountability for specific functional areas and special projects. Reporting to the Chief People & Equity Officer (CPEO), you’ll work closely with People Team Managers to ensure high quality and efficient operations and manage high-impact global projects.
Key Responsibilities
• Develop and lead the smooth function of all aspects of people operations across all locations: processes and workflows; knowledge management; structures; cohesive practices that are reliable and scalable. Implement changes to increase efficiency and quality.
• Develop and lead the team with transparent, accountable and focused leadership practices.
• Partner with CPEO to lead the re-design and implementation of our global performance management system, ensuring user-engagement and connectivity across organizational systems including values, competencies, job architecture, compensation and learning systems.
• Partner with CPEO to lead the re-design and implementation of our global compensation system, from philosophy (abstract) through implementation (routine).
• Collaborate with People Team Managers and our HRIS consultant to select and implement an HRIS solution.
• Partner with the CPEO in the design and implementation of learning and development/organization development strategies.
• Partner with Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) leads to ensure that all people practices are evaluated with an equity lens.
• As a member of the PLOS leadership team, lead people and culture development strategies and collaborate with senior leaders on the execution of business strategies.
• Provide guidance and coaching in situations requiring conflict resolution, policy/procedure interpretation, performance management, job eliminations and other terminations, disciplinary actions, and other issues.
• Develop infrastructure for collecting and analyzing employee data; summarize findings, discuss trends and recommendations with leaders.
• Direct the global facility and administration functions (two full-time team members in the US and two hybrid HR/Facilities team members in the UK).
• Espouse PLOS’ values (decisive and outcome-oriented; forward focused; engaged experimenters; personifying openness; advocates for researchers and each other).
Your Professional Background
• A strong HR generalist foundation; proven analytic and critical thinking abilities.
• Minimum 10 years of progressively responsible HR experience, with at least 5 managing employees and high-impact global projects.
• Minimum 5 years of responsibility for the human resource function across multiple countries. Preferred experience living outside of the United States.
• Must have managerial experience in a “small-ish” and complex organization (~200 employees; ~40MM annual revenue)
• Clear track record of exceptional organizational skills, both in organizing work and effectively managing and implementing change; strong results orientation.
• A Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources or related area. HR certification is preferred but not required.
• Strong preference for project management and/or continuous improvement certifications.
• Preferred experience managing the facility and/or administration functions.
Your Strengths
• Exceptional judgment. Your deep experience combined with strong critical thinking and problem solving skills are a powerful combo! You’ve developed an organic algorithm to choose your battles wisely. While there are universal truths, you know that context matters and are methodical about gathering information, sifting through lots of noise to get to the root of the thing. You avoid reactivity and are seen as a careful deliberator, but are also inclined to action - knowing that perfection and delay are the enemies of progress. Your “nonsense” threshold is low, but regardless of the situation, you show a high level of tact and discretion.
• Collaborative, organized facilitator. You’re super organized and have a head for anticipating and tending to critical details; you apply great follow-through and execution approaches to achieve ideal results. A natural at collaborating with a variety of functions, personalities and cultures, you’re able to influence with or without authority.
• A fantastic communicator. You actively listen, ask the right questions and see underlying meaning. You’re an articulate and compelling speaker, able to tailor your words to the audience and circumstance. You’re candid and kind at the same time, and tackle conflicts head-on with a solution-based approach built on facts, empathy and win/win outcomes.
• Fun! You’re authentic and have a good sense of humor. You may be intense about work outcomes, but have a light-hearted style and don’t take yourself too seriously. Your colleagues look forward to spending time with you!
• An awesome team member and coach. You generously invest in the development of others, and your counsel is sought-out. You’re willing to sacrifice your personal interests for the best interests of the team. You show up strong when your team members need you. You hold your team members accountable, and you’re receptive and humble when they hold you accountable.
• A utility player. You're OK with the messiness and ambiguity that comes with a smaller org that has infrastructure debt; you’ll roll up your sleeves to get the job done while building scalable process and infrastructure.
• A natural persistent problem solver. You like challenges and aren't put off by impediments. You’re a resilient, proactive strategist; you see roadblocks before you hit them, and look for creative solutions to get the job done.
Physical Requirements
• Prolonged periods of sitting/working at a desk and working on a computer.
• You must be able to lift 15 pounds at times.
• From the CT and ET zones, you’ll need to work after standard business hours on occasion (~7:00pm) for any urgent matters that arise in the PT zone.
• Must be able to work in a remote environment: strong virtual collaboration skills and ability to work effectively when not in a designated office. If your home work environment isn’t ideal (not sufficient space that’s free from distraction; inconsistent internet stability, etc.), you’ll need to let us know so that we can identify an alternate location.
• Must be willing to travel as needed (10%)
Equal Opportunities Statement
At PLOS we believe in pushing the boundaries of 'Open' to create a more equitable system of scientific knowledge and understanding—it’s core to who we are, inside and out. Beyond accepting distinct perspectives, we seek and support divergent backgrounds among our staff because we know differences strengthen our teams, our work, and our communities. We’re ever-evolving in our journey for representation and equity, and strongly encourage applicants of diverse identities to apply: you’ll find a group of critical thinkers eager to challenge the status quo and learn with you as we continue breaking barriers to open science Show more details...
