POSITION SUMMARY:
The Acme-Gridley and/or Davenport Screw Machine Setup Operator is responsible for set up and operating a variety of machine tools to produce precision parts and instruments out of metal. Also, may be responsible for fabricating and modifying parts to make or repair machine tools or maintain industrial machines, applying knowledge of mechanics, mathematics, metal properties, layout, and machining procedures.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Reads blueprints or job orders for product specifications such as dimensions, tolerances, number of parts to be machined, and tooling instructions such as cutting speeds, feed rates, depth of cuts, and cutting tools to be used.
• Positions and secures specified collets, bushings, and stock pushers onto stock feeding mechanism and loads bar stock into feeding mechanism.
• Installs and adjusts specified cams, gears, and stops to control stock and tool movements at each station.
• Positions and secures tools in tool holders.
• Sets cutting speeds and feed rates.
• Sets controls to cycle machine through settings, stopping machine and adjusting tool positions to allow for operational factors such as timing, clearance between moving parts, and chip removal.
• Starts machine, observes operation and inspects first run and sample workpiece to ensure machining conforms to specifications.
• Replaces worn tools.
• Operates bench grinder to sharpen tools.
• Performs on the job training for operators as needed.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
• Ability to use lathes, milling machines, grinders, and other machine tools to produce precision metal parts.
• Ability to communicate both with written and verbal instructions.
• Ability to add, subtract, multiply, divide and perform basic algebraic equations.
• Ability to interpret technical blueprints, models, and specifications so that they can craft precision tools and metal parts.
• Ability to have concentration for accuracy and agility.
• Ability to understand metalworking processes.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
• 3-5 years of setup experience with these machines is required.
• High school diploma or GED required, with training or apprenticeship programs, vocational schools, or community and technical colleges, preferred.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
• Ability to use manual machinery.
• Ability to wear all protective equipment, safety glasses, ear plugs, and/or face shields, etc.
• Ability to stand for extended periods, as well as walk, bend, stretch, use both hands with dexterity and perform repetitious movements.
• Ability to see different colors, depths and shades at different peripherals and distances.
• Ability to traverse all areas of facility.
