ENGLISH LANGUAGE CENTRE

The English Language Centre (ELC), with a strong commitment to quality learning and teaching, aims to enhance students’ communication skills, foster students’ independent, life-long English language learning and whole-person development. The ELC is mainly responsible for... offering English subjects for Language and Communication Requirements which are mandatory to all undergraduate students of the University, Discipline-Specific Requirements subjects tailor-made for more than 20 professional fields of the University’s programmes, and numerous electives designed to enhance students’ communicative competencies. It also coordinates a number of extra-curricular activities and workshops and provides diverse self-learning materials and counselling services through the Centre for Independent Language Learning. The ELC currently has around 80 teaching staff members, with a group of about 25 technical, research and administrative personnel. Duties

The appointees will be required to:

(a) teach a range of courses in English for Academic Purposes (EAP), English for Specific Purposes (ESP) and communication skills for undergraduate students;

(b) engage in teaching of other English language enhancement initiatives of the ELC;

(c) participate in the pedagogical development and administration of the ELC’s teaching and learning activities; and

(d) perform any other duties as assigned by the Director of Centre or his/her delegates.

Qualifications

Applicants should:

(a) have a recognised degree in a related discipline;

(b) have a postgraduate teaching qualification;

(c) possess at least three years’ post-qualification relevant teaching experience at tertiary level (experience in teaching upper secondary classes may also be considered);

(d) be able to demonstrate a strong commitment to excellence in teaching; and

(e) be a highly proficient English speaker.

PRESIDENTIAL YOUNG SCHOLARS SCHEME

To boost the leadership and impact of PolyU’s research work in areas of significant societal needs and strategic importance, the Strategic Hiring Scheme (SHS) is introduced to recruit faculty members at all levels. The Presidential Young Scholars Scheme (PYSS) is one of the initiatives established under the SHS to invite outstanding young scholars to join the University as Assistant Professors and Associate Professors.

Applicants for the post of Assistant Professor should have undertaken their PhD and/or postdoctoral research in a world-leading research group, published a significant amount of world-leading research as a main author, and demonstrated promise of a high level of creative ability in teaching and research. The Institute for Higher Education Research and Development

The Institute for Higher Education Research and Development (IHERD) will lead, promote, and support the University’s educational research and innovation to achieve better learning outcomes for students. Bridging educational research, innovation, and policy development, IHERD will also enhance the capacity of the University in contributing to the future development of higher education in the region and beyond as a forward-looking thought leader, epically the context of developing Hong Kong as well as the Greater Bay Area into an international innovation and technology hub.

IHERD will comprise the Educational Research Centre (ERC) and the Educational Development Centre (EDC). Both centres are independent units with their own Directors, structures and budgets. The Director of IHERD is expected to also serve as the Director of the ERC.

Job Functions

Reporting to the Vice President (Education), the appointee will be required to:

(a) provide leadership to promote and support the University’s educational research and pedagogical innovations;

(b) support the Central Management in devising and implementing strategic initiatives, policies and guidelines on forward-looking educational research/innovations;

(c) promote and enhance the capacity and reputation of the University as a leader in higher education research and innovation, especially in engineering, technology and applied science disciplines;

(d) oversee the operations and performance of the EDC in addition to leading the ERC;

(e) manage the strategic allocation of funding and monitor the execution of education-related projects;

(f) facilitate and monitor the implementation of outcomes of education-related projects in learning and teaching activities; and

(g) performany other duties as assigned by the Vice President (Education) or his delegate(s) or the Central Management of the University.

The successful candidate is expected to also serve as a full-time non-temporary Chair Professor or Professor of the University and will hold the concurrent directorship appointments mentioned above which are usually for a term of three years on renewable basis. The appointee is expected to resume his/her substantive position at the end of the directorship appointments.

Qualifications

Applicants should be visionary and inspiring leaders with a strong drive for excellent performance and have:

(a) outstanding academic qualifications and scholarly achievements at Chair Professor / Professor level in an engineering, technology, or applied science discipline and/or in education research/innovation related to such a discipline with evidence of eminent scholarship;

(b) a distinguished reputation as a world-leading researcher, with a strong track record in conducting impactful educational research and developing innovative pedagogies in engineering, technology and applied science disciplines;

(c) a strong record in attracting educational research funding, and proven excellence in high quality research in learning and teaching;

(d) effective communication, interpersonal and resource management skills and excellent adaptability to changes and challenges;

(e) substantial knowledge of the higher education environment in the local, regional and/or global contexts; and

The Department of Chinese Culture is part of the Faculty of Humanities. Its mission is to offer high-quality undergraduate and postgraduate programmes that provide interdisciplinary training in the study of Chinese history and culture. Duties

The appointee will be required to:

(a) engage in teaching aspects of Chinese history and culture and undertake related pedagogical activities at undergraduate and postgraduate levels;

(c) undertake scholarly research in his/her area(s) of expertise;

(d) provide administrative support for academic and departmental affairs; and

Qualifications

Applicants should have:

(a) a PhD in a relevant discipline;

(b) a strong commitment to excellence in teaching and learning;

(c) relevant post-qualification teaching and research experience and an excellent record of relevant academic achievements; and

(d) an excellent command of both written and spoken English and Chinese.

(e) Applicants with extensive evidence of successful teaching at tertiary level and excellence in research as well as a strong publication record may be considered for appointment at Associate Professor level.
