The Northwest is a diverse and important region — a major technology hub (home to Amazon and Microsoft), an important gateway to international trade, a harbinger for the effects of climate change and... a home of abundant natural resources. You’ll be a part of our team of reporters covering the Pacific Northwest with a focus on Washington, Oregon, Alaska and Idaho.

Our work in the region by staff and Local Reporting Network partners has revealed how indigenous people in Alaska are denied public safety services, detailed the harrowing account of the hunt for a serial rapist and botched police investigations, drawn attention to allegations of abuse and minimal instruction at special education schools in Washington, and highlighted the disproportionate risk of toxic exposure to Native tribes from fish in Oregon. And we’re excited to dig deeper into this important region.

We’re looking for a reporter who:
• Has at least five years of professional journalism experience, either at a news agency or as a freelancer.
• Has produced original, revelatory, in-depth or investigative stories. If that experience is in the Pacific Northwest, all the better, but we are open to applicants with strong bodies of work from other places. You don’t have to be an “investigative reporter,” but your work should show a dedication to digging for the truth.
• Aches to report stories that are both important and powerfully told, and has a vision for how they’d cover the Pacific Northwest. Your approach should get to the heart of the unique lived experiences of people in this region.
• Has experience with or ideas about all the possible ways we can do journalism now: from deep data digging to working with readers to marrying narrative and investigative forms.
• Wants to bring an accountability lens to the issues of the day through quick investigations reported over a couple of weeks and longer projects that you dig into for a few months (or more).
• Really likes working with others. We are a highly collaborative newsroom, both across our team and with other news organizations regionally and nationally. We believe we do our best work together.

This job is full time and includes benefits. The candidates must be based in, or willing to relocate to, one of the states in our Pacific Northwest coverage area. Applicants must be eligible to work in the U.S.

The expected salary range for this position is $85,000 to $170,000.

This is a good faith estimate of what we expect to pay for this position. The final salary figure will take into account a person’s experience, accomplishment and location. ProPublica is committed to paying its staff equitably, and these ranges should not be considered career salary limits or caps.

If all of this sounds exciting, you can apply using this form.

We know there are great candidates who may not fit into what we’ve described above or who have important skills we haven’t thought of. If that’s you, don’t hesitate to apply and tell us about yourself.

We are dedicated to improving our newsroom, in part by better reflecting the people we cover. (Here is a breakdown of our staff.) We are committed to diversity and building an inclusive env

This will be ProPublica’s fifth regional hub, complementing our... presence in the Midwest, South and Southwest as well as our joint initiative in Texas with The Texas Tribune. This is our first hybrid local effort in which an editor will work with both ProPublica staffers and LRN partners.

The Northwest is a diverse and important region — a major technology hub (home to Amazon and Microsoft), an important gateway to international trade, a harbinger for the effects of climate change and a home of abundant natural resources.

This editor will have the responsibility to guide, edit and elevate the work of six reporters whose goal is to ultimately create compelling investigations that spur change.

This position is full time and includes benefits. It will be based in the Northwest; we are open to candidates based in or willing to relocate to Washington, Oregon, Alaska or Idaho.

The expected salary range for this position is $150,000 to $195,000.

This is a good-faith estimate of what we expect to pay for this position. The final salary figure will take into account a person’s experience, accomplishment and location. ProPublica is committed to paying its staff equitably, and these ranges should not be considered career salary limits or caps.

What you would be doing:
• Helping to hire and then overseeing three staff investigative reporters who will cover Washington, Oregon, Alaska and Idaho.
• Editing three Distinguished Reporters from our Local Reporting Network, being a part of the selection of LRN partners and conducting LRN training sessions.
• Working with ProPublica researchers, data visualization reporters, engagement reporters, audience and video staffers, and story producers.
• Partnering with other news organizations on projects and stories.
• Setting the tone for coverage in an important region with many untold stories.

We’re looking for someone who:
• Has a track record — as either an editor or reporter — of landing revelatory stories about abuses of power.
• Has previous experience leading a team, office, bureau or newsroom and the skills to foster a culture of inclusion, execute a vision and create team camaraderie among a distributed staff.
• Aches to tell stories that are both important and powerfully told.
• Is truly excited about all the possible ways we can do journalism nowadays: from deep data-digging to working with readers to marrying narrative and investigative forms.
• Has a track record that shows a commitment to diversity in all ways, from ensuring that story topics and sources reflect the communities we cover to empowering a team of journalists who bring with them a variety of identities, journalism backgrounds and lived experiences.
• Really likes working with others. We’re a collaborative news organization. We want the same for this new team.
• Has knowledge of the Northwest, though that’s a plus, not a requirement. We’re interested in the vision you have for the newsroom and for the impactful work we can do here.

What you should send us:
• Samples of your work. The most important part of the application by far is examples of the work you have edited. Send us your best stuff. Let us know how your editing shaped and improved the stories. Don’t be shy — tell us what worked (numbers and evidence of impact are welcome!) and how you’d do it differently next time. Editing is about far more than moving words around. Show us how you thin

While the vast majority of ProPublica’s work comes from our staff, we occasionally consider supporting ambitious accountability stories or projects from experienced independent journalists whose ideas align with the mission of our organization. If you have a tip that you'd like us to consider covering, While the vast majority of ProPublica’s work comes from our staff, we occasionally consider supporting ambitious accountability stories or projects from experienced independent journalists whose ideas align with the mission of our organization.

(This form is meant for freelance story pitches from working journalists with a previous record of publishing investigations with news outlets. If you have a tip that you'd like us to consider covering, please use this form instead.)

Here’s what journalists submitting proposals should know.

We’re open to investigations that are revelatory or substantially advance what is known on a subject of importance. The investigation should have the potential to trigger needed reforms by identifying a problem, who’s responsible and what should change. It should also clearly show harm. The investigation can be rooted in a place or focus on a person, but it should illuminate an issue of broader relevance.

The best proposals have a clear hypothesis... typically based on significant reporting: They don’t wonder whether something bad is happening, they know it. Please include not only a general description of the topic, but also a sense of the anecdotes/data/documents you have gathered, what you expect to find and possible accountability stories you want to tell.

In addition, applicants should detail, as much as is possible at the outset, what an investigation will require: data work, travel, obtaining public records. It’s also important for us to know what data, documents and/or source relationships the reporter already has. Finally, we’d like to hear a bit about why you are particularly suited to do this investigation.

If you are an experienced journalist and all of this sounds exciting to you, you can apply using this form.

For those proposals we accept, we pay competitive freelance rates, including reporting expenses. Freelancers are independent contractors and will not be treated by ProPublica as employees for any purpose. Independent contractors are responsible for paying any required taxes on any compensation received and for understanding the applicable tax laws.

We are dedicated to widening our pool of freelancers, in part by better reflecting the people we cover. (Here is a breakdown of our staff.) We are committed to diversity and building an inclusive environment for people of all backgrounds and ages. And we are taking steps to meet that commitment. We especially encourage members of traditionally underrepresented communities to apply, including women, people of color, LGBTQ people and people with disabilities. We are an equal opportunity employer and prohibit discrimination and harassment of any kind. All employment decisions are made without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, national origin, age or any other status protected under applicable law.

We will begin reviewing applications as we receive them, and aim to notify candidates regarding your proposals within two weeks of submission.

This person will be expected to make a real difference in an organization that’s growing and moving at the pace of news...

Your work will play an essential role in fulfilling our mission: producing journalism that spurs real-world change. That means helping sharpen the tools we use to do our work, ensuring our systems are resilient and keeping our staffers, our work and our sources secure.

The nature of ProPublica’s journalism means we face consistent challenges and unique threats. Some recent examples include safeguarding the trove of never-before-seen information obtained while reporting “The Secret IRS Files” and protecting confidential material used in our series chronicling neglect in the Navy.

Push us to use technology to better automate and collaborate, and to analyze our work — from newsgathering and publishing to critical functions such as HR, finance and audience development. To put it simply, help us find useful and delightful ways that technology can help us do our jobs better.

You’ll supervise and work alongside the manager of technology and operations to ensure that our technology, infrastructure and tools are as modern and robust as possible. Based in our New York City office, this role will report jointly to the chief product officer and general counsel.

Our Environment

The ideal candidate is an expert with some of our existing infrastructure and is positioned to advocate for improvements.

We have nearly 200 employees using a mix of Windows and Mac computers and Apple and Android mobile devices in an increasingly distributed environment. Devices and services are managed with Jamf, Microsoft Endpoint Manager and Azure.

We’re headquartered in New York City with smaller, regional offices in Washington, D.C.; Chicago; Berkeley, California; Austin, Texas; Phoenix; and Atlanta. Many more employees are working entirely remotely, and we have plans to grow our staff.

Web hosting is on Linux-based containers operating in Amazon Web Services. A limited number of physical servers are Windows-based. • Monitor, model and mitigate information and operational security threats. Chair an internal security committee to ensure best practices. Represent the organization with outside security consultants and organizations.
• Manage the on- and off-boarding of employees from services and devices, ensure the help desk is adequately staffed and effective.
• Maintain existing infrastructure, including both local systems and a growing number of critical integrations with cloud software providers.
• Collaborate with developers across the organization to ensure their work is coordinated and in support of our larger technology strategy.
• Take accountability for a significant budget, including capital planning and forecasting. Serve as the primary billing and technical contact for technology vendors, including cost controls.
• Manage relationships with vendors and direct managed service providers to assist ProPublica with its technology goals.

About ProPublica...

ProPublica is an independent, nonprofit newsroom that produces investigative journalism with moral force and that was founded with the belief that investigative journalism is critical to our democracy. We dig deep into important issues, shining a light on abuses of power and betrayals of public trust — and we keep digging for as long as it takes to hold power to account. What We’re Looking for Help on...

Our team does two types of projects:

News applications, which are interactive databases that help the public make important decisions in their lives. They’re also always investigative in nature. Some of our largest news apps take a long time to make, but the ones we may need help with in the next couple months should be able to be done in a month or two. Here are a few examples of the scope and type of work we’re expecting we’d need help with:
• What Parler Saw During the Attack on the Capitol
• Tracking PPP
• The NYPD Files

Some of these projects involved extensive back-end database work or data analysis before we created the public-facing news app. If you have those skills, great! If you don’t, don’t worry. We can also pair you with an in-house developer or editor. We’re looking for folks who can do the front end, the back end or both on these projects.

Graphics, which you can think of as storytelling done visually instead of only through text. The work can include interactive quizzes, data visualization or other creative ways to use multimedia and interactive design to tell a story. Here are a few examples of the scope and type of work we’re expecting we’d need help with:
• Hawaii’s Beaches Are Disappearing
• Reopening America
• What Coronavirus Job Losses Reveal About Racism in America

Additionally, we may need some help with:
• Creating graphics for stories using Datawrapper.
• Producing embedded interactives for stories using JavaScript, HTML and CSS.

Relevant Skills:

The general skills we’re looking for include any of the following:
• Front-end web design (HTML/CSS and JavaScript).
• Front-end data visualization (D3.js or other libraries).
• Back-end Rails or Django skills that would allow you to build and deploy an interactive database.

We prefer applicants with experience in journalism or related fields.

What You Should Send Us:
