Description
Homelessness and Poverty Reporter
WNYC/Gothamist Newsroom
The WNYC/Gothamist Newsroom is seeking an ambitious, analytical and curious reporter to cover two of the most consequential and wide-ranging issues facing New York City — homelessness and poverty.
As the city grapples with record-levels of homelessness, an influx of migrants, spiking rents and widening economic gaps laid bare by the pandemic, this reporter will be charged with producing unique and original stories on the economic instability facing New Yorkers and how it affects policies and politics, and vice-versa. The right candidate for this role has no qualms talking to individuals from all walks of life, capturing stories about their struggles to find housing, food and other necessities required to live in this city.
The ideal candidate for this role is adept at covering the workforce, homelessness, poverty, education, race, politics and the economy. We are looking for a reporter who is capable of understanding that this beat covers many areas and is able to spot trends before they arise. This reporter will use publicly available data to synthesize story concepts, with a focus on solutions- and audience-focused storytelling as well as holding accountable agencies and nonprofits charged with creating lasting change. This reporter will use data and public documents as a foundation for building story lines and themes, and to test traditional cultural and political narratives and beliefs around poverty and wealth.
As a newsroom that specializes in two mediums— both text and audio — the ideal candidate will be able to work with different story-telling formats and pitch new and innovative ways to tell stories.
Responsibilities

• Balance a mix of daily, deadline-driven news coverage while concurrently balancing longer-term enterprise and investigative stories.
• Track municipal, state and federal policies and data on jobs, labor and housing that would intersect with homelessness and poverty.
• Develop sources and scoops that our audience can’t find elsewhere.
• Monitor the work of non-profit providers and community-based organizations that are working toward addressing homelessness and poverty.
• Produce balanced stories anchored in the stories of real people, to demonstrate the real life effects of policies and politics.
• Produce balanced stories with politically unbiased language that eschew stereotypes and hold accountable both activists and policymakers.
• Participate fully as a member of the Economics & Equity coverage team by contributing to coverage plans, meetings, brainstorming sessions, and newsroom projects.
• Effectively coordinate with other editors and digital journalists for maximum reach across our platforms.
Qualifications:
• 5+ years covering a competitive beat for a daily news organization.
• Familiarity with economic systems, housing policies and laws, business and industry strongly preferred.
• Demonstrated skill at conceiving and producing news stories free of political bias or that border on activism.
• An extensive track record of landing scoops and exclusive stories.
• Comfortability working with data and searching for story leads in data.
• Ability to speak in another language is preferred.
• Strong grammar skills and writing that is clear and free of errors.
• Experience making public records requests and writing stories based on those requests.
• Solid news judgment -- the ability to spot and develop a story that will engage audiences
• Superb communication and organizational skills, the ability to multitask, and experience covering breaking news.
• A sophisticated understanding of how existing systems and institutional structures work for or against different types of people. Demonstrated knowledge of complex social and cultural issues.
• Demonstrated commitment and ability to contribute an equity lens to every aspect of reporting.
• Familiarity or a willingness to learn audio journalism.
• The ability to work effectively with the public, including those on social media, as well as colleagues at New York Public Radio.
