The Center for Public Integrity, a Pulitzer Prize-winning nonprofit news organization focused on investigating inequality, seeks a data journalist to work with the Central Valley Journalism Collaborative. The position is full time for one year, with a possibility of an extension.
In addition to its own national investigative reporting, Public Integrity aims to build capacity among local news organizations and journalists for investigative reporting that confronts inequality, particularly those primarily serving communities of color.
The Central Valley Journalism Collaborative is a new, nonprofit newsroom that aims to reignite high-quality journalism across California's San Joaquin Valley. Such journalism will boost public engagement with civic life, improve the quality of life and opportunities in the Valley and provide the sort of trustworthy and important information people need to participate in a healthy democracy.
The person in this position will drive our efforts to help CVJC and its local partner newsrooms do data-driven investigations. They also will support the Public Integrity/CVJC partnership by providing training, mentorship and support that builds capacity among local journalists. They will be on staff as a member of Public Integrity's data journalism team, but will work in collaboration with the CVJC newsroom.
We prioritize solutions-oriented journalism and reporting with and in service to the communities affected by the issues we cover.
The ideal candidate will have strong data journalism skills and experience; a commitment to collaborative journalism with colleagues and partner news organizations; and a passion to expose the historical context and modern drivers of inequality in areas such as access to democracy, employment, housing, health care, education, business and finance. Fluency in Spanish, Hmong, Thai, Punjabi or Hindi is a plus.

Responsibilities
• Work with CVJC staff and local newsrooms to plan and identify data-driven investigations.
• Help those newsrooms acquire, clean and analyze data for those investigations.
• Identify opportunities for sharing data and tools.
• Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
• Ability to identify, evaluate and acquire data.
• Ability to analyze data using a range of tools, including spreadsheets and databases.
• Ability to formulate methodologies, including those using statistical analyses.
• Ability to present data in a meaningful way to colleagues, partners and readers.
• Ability to juggle multiple projects and meet deadlines.
• Exceptional organizational skills and a proven ability to work collegially with others.
• Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience and training.
Salary: $75,000-$85,000
