Consulting for updating connection from PostGIS DB to QGIS client

Looking for consulting on how to best update my current PostGIS to QGIS connection. Currently, I am set up to use PuTTY to connect to an EC2 bastion host then access an RDS postGIS database via an SSH tunnel. This set up was put in place years ago, and I'm not sure it's the best, most secure and versatile way to connect QGIS to the PostGIS DB.
