Content Producer Rambler Media Group (Work Study and Student Assistant)

Position Summary

Do you like to write stories, make videos, and/or take photographs? Then working for the student newspaper, The Rambler, and Rambler TV might be an excellent opportunity for you.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
• Content producers may need access to high-speed internet at home, as well as access to a cell phone to call sources.
• Produce at least three publishable assignments each week in text, video, slideshow, podcast, interactive graphic, interactive map or other media mode based on appropriateness for each story.
• Meet deadlines for projects, stories, ect.
• Generate and communicate to Editor-in-Chief, Faculty Adviser and Faculty Liaison newsworthy story ideas on a weekly basis during budget meetings.
• Maintain contact and good rapport with sources from beats.
• Conduct interviews and research to ensure balanced, complete, fair and accurate stories.
• Provide a complete list of all sources, including contact information, for quality control purposes.
• Make revisions to edited stories in a timely fashion for same day turnaround.
• Attend regularly scheduled meetings for all staff, including training sessions.
• Seek individual help or training when problems arise.
• Maintain Rambler equipment to ensure proper functioning, availability and cleanliness.
• Keep up with email, phone messages and campus mail with next day turnaround.
• Post to Rambler social media as needed.
• Practice basics of convergent journalism through The Rambler, www.therambler.org and Rambler TV so that appropriate story is filed with appropriate media outlet.
• Provide consistent and accurate coverage of Texas Wesleyan and Texas Wesleyan-related events.
• Must be familiar with The Rambler policies manual and statement of ethical behavior in student media.

Education, Certifications and/or Licenses
• None required

Experience
• No journalistic experience is necessary for this job. Qualified applicants can learn on the job through training.
• Students from all majors are welcome to apply.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
• Knowledge of Associated Press Style and use of digital media is a plus.
• Knowledge of the Adobe Suite is also a plus.
• Knowledge of how to write journalistically is also a plus, though not required.
• Content Producers must be familiar with The Rambler policies manual and statement of ethical behavior in student media.
• Excellent and effective written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to provide a service-oriented approach to clients, both internal and external.
• Ability to solve problems efficiently and effectively.
• Discretion in handling confidential matters, while complying with FERPA regulations.
• Ability to follow University and departmental procedures and policies.
• Ability to work cooperatively with a diverse group of individuals.
• Ability to provide and demonstrate quality customer service.
• Ability to maintain a professional appearance and office atmosphere.

• Creating a database of advertisers.
• Working with faculty adviser and faculty liaison to create marketing materials.
• Working with faculty adviser to create ad rates for print and online sales venues and presentation.
• Working with national sales agencies to ensure accurate and timely communication and advertising placement.
• Working with faculty adviser to establish a system of credit for advertising clients.
• Keeping an accurate log of advertisers and payment status.
• Creating dummies for The Rambler print edition and any print special sections.
• Working with students from Mass Communication and/or Marketing courses, in conjunction with faculty adviser and faculty liaison.
• Attending regularly scheduled meetings for all staff and training sessions.
• Meeting regularly with the faculty adviser and faculty liaison to keep them updated on progress and any potential problems or concerns with department (i.e., legal, ethical, internal discipline, budgets, equipment needs, etc.).
• Scheduling training and development activities for sales staff members.
• Maintaining a minimum (but announced) schedule of office hours to address all potential concerns of the staff and Texas Wesleyan community.
• Design ads for different mediums.
• Work on the student newsletter.
