The Christian Reformed Church of Washington, D.C. is looking for our next pastor to join this small and mighty congregation to lead us in continued spiritual growth. We take pride in being a multigenerational and multiethnic congregation with a commitment to the church neighborhood and many communities in which we reside throughout the DC metro area. We have an appreciation for a... Reformed perspective in preaching and teaching, vibrant worship services, pastoral care to regular attenders, and outreach to visitors. As a congregation, we value having a pastor with a sense of humor, forthright communication, careful listening, a spiritual and emotional growth mindset, and humble service. Interest and experience in urban ministry will be valuable in this position.

Our church offers a 4-bedroom spacious and attractive parsonage next door to the church as a reflection of our commitment to the community and acknowledgment of the cost of housing in the DC area. Historically our pastors have resided in the parsonage and although that is our preference for our next pastor, we are open to exploring other uses for the parsonage in the case that the pastor prefers to seek their own housing.

Our Council cares for the pastor in doctrine, life, and duties through prayer and community. An Administrative Committee provides support, reviews, and facilitates healthy relationships amongst the staff. We work collaboratively as a church amongst council, staff, and team leaders to modify responsibilities to continually meet the needs and priorities of the church.

PASTOR JOB DESCRIPTION

Requirements:
• Hold a Master of Divinity degree from an accredited theological seminary.
• Meet the requirements of CRCNA Church Order Article 6 or Article 8.
• Be a person of prayer, a student of the Bible, and supportive of the doctrines of the Reformed faith.
• Demonstrate a personal lifestyle that serves as a model for the congregation, balancing commitments to church, self, and family.
• Regularly invests time in professional development (reading, classes, coaching and spiritual direction) to develop skills in the areas of preaching, pastoral care, theology, social concern and organizational leadership.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Administer the sacraments, meeting with families prior to baptism, crafting liturgies for both communion and baptism.
• Meet with the Director of Music weekly to plan the worship services. In absence of such a staff role, craft worship weekly and, with elders, ensure that musical accompaniment is provided.
• Encourage lay participation, including children and teens, in the worship services.
• Challenge members of the congregation to relate their faith to their daily lives. Include stories, examples, applications, or other material relevant to kids and teenagers in preaching and worship.
• Give children’s messages, along with lay members, as part of worship services.
• Engage in long-range planning of sermon series so that teams (Education, Worship, etc.) may coordinate their efforts appropriately.

Pastoral Care
• Greet and interact with members, attenders, and visitors after the worship service each week. Encourage members to make guests feel welcome in worship and ministry programs.
• Follow up with local visitors who have attended worship services. Work to incorporate interested visitors into the life of the church.
• Visit the sick, those with special concerns or needs and the homebound, in coordination with the elders. Serve communion to the homebound as appropriate.
• Schedule at least one meaningful contact with each member/family per year.
• Reach out to inactive members.
• Inform elders monthly regarding contacts made, receive information about needed contacts to be made and suggest contacts elders may wish to pursue in their districts.
• Counsel individuals and families as appropriate.
• Provide premarital counseling and perform marriages as needed.
• Provide bereavement support and perform funerals as needed.

Leadership/Administration
• Promote faithful stewardship and financial giving.
• Supervise staff. Meet weekly with each member of staff and create monthly staff meetings when there are more than 2 staff members. Work cooperatively with the Administrative Team and Council and provide input into annual evaluations.
• Participate in Council, working with Council officers to create and distribute an agenda and all read-ahead materials by the Sunday before a Council meeting.
• Participate in elders’ meetings, drafting the agenda, compiling read-ahead material and leading the meetings.

Equip the elders and deacons to do their work. This may entail one-on-one meetings with elders or deacons, annual training, and mutual visits with church members.
• Support and encourage all ministry teams. Contact each team lead at least twice per year. Work with teams to create annual church goals and objectives for discussion with the Council.
• Support the work of the Building & Grounds Team by informing the team lead of any concerns or issues in the church building or parsonage so they can be addressed in a timely manner.
• Make sure that the pastor, Church Administrator, Council clerk, or congregational archivist is maintaining information regarding baptisms, professions of faith, and membership, as well as a master copy of all minutes and other official documents, such as manuals, bylaws, and council signatures on covenants for office bearers.
• Attend Classis meetings and perform Classis duties assigned.

Faith Formation
• Encourage members to use their gifts and talents in the church.
• Encourage members to connect faith to daily life, taking advantage of opportunities to serve others, share their faith and contribute to the common good. Learn about vocational work, justice ministry, etc. being done by congregation members and provide opportunities (newsletter, testimony, classes, etc.) for these to be shared with the congregation.
• Facilitate connection with other local churches and organizations to promote outward-facing ministry opportunities. Encourage members to participate in activities and programs that build connection and common purpose with the broader Christian community, including our denomination.
• Develop relationships with neighbors as well as engage the congregation in contributing to the life and well-being of the community.
• Contribute regularly to the monthly newsletter.
• Teach classes at various levels as needed/requested.
• Lead class for new members as needed, typically once per year.
• Engage with the church’s teens and kids outside of the worship service. Some ways might be through going on SERVE, leading a Sunday school class, attending a school or athletic event, or having “coffee” times.
