The Road Maintenance Worker performs road construction and maintenance work in one or more specialized public works programs. Work includes reconstruction/rehabilitation, surface maintenance, secondary drainage, right-of-way maintenance, or customer services programs.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
This is the first in a series of two road maintenance-related job classifications within the Maintenance job family. This classification is distinguished by performing general road maintenance work, drainage system maintenance work, mowing grass, removing brush and debris from right-of-ways and performing general traffic control at work site. This classification may require a flexible work schedule in order to meet the needs of the department.
Duties and Responsibilities
• Performs general road maintenance labor associated with tasks required to repair roadways and right-of-ways, including mixing and pouring concrete, sealing cracks and patching roads, and cleaning drains and ditches.
• Operates light duty vehicles and equipment associated with roadway and right-of-way maintenance, including pick up trucks, tractors, dump trucks, tank trucks, loaders/backhoes and rollers.
• Removes trash, erects fences and barricades, installs culverts, repairs and erects signs and guard rails, places hot or cold asphalt mix, repairs driveway approaches and applies dust control emulsion to roadways.
• Installs, erects and processes materials associated with roadway and right-of-way maintenance.
• Provides assistance, as directed, during emergency situations, such as floods, severe weather and accidents.
• Performs general traffic control at the job site to ensure a safe working environment. Places and gathers traffic control signs and barricades within construction work zones and directs traffic within zone. Observes safety precautions and follows safety rules and regulations.
• Performs preventative vehicle and equipment minor maintenance and repairs. Checks oil, water, fuel, services tires, makes appropriate adjustments prior to leaving the job site. Maintains mileage and service record on vehicles driven.
• Cuts and removes brush, mows grass and weedeats along roadside, and removes safety or health hazards, including dead animal removal and disposal from right-of-ways.
• Assists with indigent burials and cemetery grounds maintenance, as required.
• Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements
Education and Experience:
One (1) year of road construction and maintenance experience;
OR,
Any combination of education and experience that has been achieved and is equivalent to the stated education and experience and required knowledge, skills, and abilities sufficient to successfully perform the duties and responsibilities of this job.
Licenses, Registrations, Certifications, or Special Requirements:
Valid Texas Driver's License.
Valid Texas Commercial Driver's License (CDL).

Work Environment & Other Information

Longevity
Longevity pay is paid for each year completed after three years of continuous service. Peace Officers in a law enforcement activity, whose job requires state peace officer certification, receive pay after one year of certification.
Parking
A limited number of assigned parking spaces are available to employees in the Courthouse Complex.
Personal Holidays
Regular, full-time employees are eligible for up to three paid personal holidays each calendar year. Part-time employees shall be granted personal holidays on a prorated basis. New employees earn personal holidays for the calendar year in which he/she begins employment, based on the month in which employment begins:

New employees are eligible to take personal holidays after 90 days of employment.
Retirement
Travis County is a member of the Texas County & District Retirement System with mandatory participation by certain classes of employees. Matching of two hundred twenty-five (225%) and a seven percent (7%) of the gross salary is deducted each pay period. An employee is fully vested after eight years of service. Benefits are prorated for part-time employees.
Sick Leave
Regular employees earn sick leave at a rate of eight hours per month with unlimited accrual during employment. Part-time employees earn sick leave on a pro-rated basis.
Parental Leave
Each Full-time Paid Parental Leave Eligible (PPL) Employee is entitled to a total of 320 hours of Paid Parental Leave in a 12 month period. Paid Parental Leave for Part-time PPL Eligible Employees is prorated based on the number of hours that they are regularly scheduled to work.
Tuition Refund
Certain classes of full-time employees may receive reimbursement for fees associated with pre-approved, job related course work completed satisfactorily.
Vacation
Based on years of county service, regular, full-time employees earn vacation time at the following rates:

This classification is distinguished by performing general road maintenance work, drainage system maintenance work, mowing grass, removing brush and debris from right-of-ways and performing general traffic control at work site. This classification may require a flexible work schedule in order to meet the needs of the department.
Duties and Responsibilities
• Performs general road maintenance labor associated with tasks required to repair roadways and right-of-ways, including mixing and pouring concrete, sealing cracks and patching roads, and cleaning drains and ditches.
• Operates light duty vehicles and equipment associated with roadway and right-of-way maintenance, including pick up trucks, tractors, dump trucks, tank trucks, loaders/backhoes and rollers.
• Removes trash, erects fences and barricades, installs culverts, repairs and erects signs and guard rails, places hot or cold asphalt mix, repairs driveway approaches and applies dust control emulsion to roadways.
• Installs, erects and processes materials associated with roadway and right-of-way maintenance.
• Provides assistance, as directed, during emergency situations, such as floods, severe weather and accidents.
• Performs general traffic control at the job site to ensure a safe working environment. Places and gathers traffic control signs and barricades within construction work zones and directs traffic within zone. Observes safety precautions and follows safety rules and regulations.
• Performs preventative vehicle and equipment minor maintenance and repairs. Checks oil, water, fuel, services tires, makes appropriate adjustments prior to leaving the job site. Maintains mileage and service record on vehicles driven.
• Cuts and removes brush, mows grass and weedeats along roadside, and removes safety or health hazards, including dead animal removal and disposal from right-of-ways.
• Assists with indigent burials and cemetery grounds maintenance, as required.
• Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements
Education and Experience:
One (1) year of road construction and maintenance experience;

Retirement
Travis County is a member of the Texas County & District Retirement System with mandatory participation by certain classes of employees. Benefits are prorated for part-time employees.
Sick Leave
Regular employees earn sick leave at a rate of eight hours per month with unlimited accrual during employment. Part-time employees earn sick leave on a pro-rated basis.
Parental Leave
Each Full-time Paid Parental Leave Eligible (PPL) Employee is entitled to a total of 320 hours of Paid Parental Leave in a 12 month period. Paid Parental Leave for Part-time PPL Eligible Employees is prorated based on the number of hours that they are regularly scheduled to work.
Tuition Refund
Certain classes of full-time employees may receive reimbursement for fees associated with pre-approved, job related course work completed satisfactorily.

• Responsible for safely operating a tractor/trailer in the transportation of freight in accordance with Company, Federal, State and Local laws with regard to run times and Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations
• Must adhere to all FMCSA requirements of those holding a Commercial Driver's License
• Maintain records required with compliance with local, state and federal regulations

• Must possess a valid Class A Commercial Driver's License

• HazMat, Tanker and Doubles endorsements required (LCV requirement may apply)
• Must be able to drive a tractor trailer for a period of time that will conform to FMCSA requirements
• Must be capable of dropping/hooking and coupling trailers which involves cranking landing gear, pulling 5th wheel pin which takes approximately 65 lbs. of pressure; and maneuvering a trailer dolly
• Must be able to provide an acceptable MVR
• Must be familiar with state motor vehicle laws and FMCSA rules and regulations, pass FMCSA required medical exam and speak and read English
• Must be able to lift approximately 70 lbs., or more if required by the essential functions of the job

Qualifications

• HazMat, Tanker and Doubles endorsements required (LCV requirement may apply)
• Must be able to drive a tractor trailer for a period of time that will conform to FMCSA requirements
• Must be capable of dropping/hooking and coupling trailers which involves cranking landing gear, pulling 5th wheel pin which takes approximately 65 lbs. of pressure; and maneuvering a trailer dolly
• Must be able to provide an acceptable MVR
• Must be familiar with state motor vehicle laws and FMCSA rules and regulations, pass FMCSA required medical exam and speak and read English
• Must be able to lift approximately 70 lbs., or more if required by the essential functions of the job
• Must pass a road test and be able to drive all routes and in all types of terrain, including, but not limited to, mountains, steep inclined roads, curvy highways, desert areas, bridges, tunnels, etc.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS, including, but not limited to the following:
Standing
Most tasks are performed from a standing position. Walking surfaces include ceramic tile "bricks" with linoleum in some food process areas. Height of work surfaces is between 36" and 48".

For short distances for short durations
Delivery personnel must travel between the store and delivery vehicle and from the delivery vehicle to the customer's location.

Paperwork is normally completed in an office at a desk or table
Lifting
Bulk product deliveries are made twice a week or more and are unloaded by the team member using a hand truck.
Deliveries may include cases of ingredients and supplies weighing up to 50 pounds with dimensions of up to 3' x 1.5'.
Cases are usually lifted from floor and stacked onto shelves up to 72" high.
Carrying
Large cans, weighing 3 pounds, 7 ounces, are carried from the workstation to storage shelves.
Occasionally, pizza sauce weighing 30 pounds is carried from the storage room to the front of the store.
Trays of pizza dough are carried three at a time over short distances, and weigh approximately 12 pounds per tray.
During delivery, carry pizzas and beverages while performing "walking" and "climbing" duties.
Pushing
To move trays which are placed on dollies.
A stack of trays on a dolly is approximately 24" - 30" and requires a force of up to 7.5 pounds to push.
Trays may also be pulled.
Climbing
Team members must infrequently navigate stairs or climb a ladder to change prices on signs, wash walls, perform maintenance.
During delivery of product, navigation of five or more flights of stairs may be required.
Stooping/Bending
Forward bending at the waist is necessary at the pizza assembly station.
Toe room is present, but workers are unable to flex their knees while standing at this station.
Duration of this position is approximately 30 - 45 seconds at one time, repeated continuously during the day.
Forward bending is also present at the front counter and when stocking ingredients.
Crouching/Squatting
Performed occasionally to stock shelves and to clean low areas.
Reaching
Reaching is performed continuously; up, down and forward.
Workers reach above 72" occasionally to turn on/off oven controls, change prices on sign, and lift and lower objects to and from shelves.
Workers reaching down to perform such tasks as scooping cornmeal from a plastic barrel, or washing dishes.
Workers reach forward when obtaining topping ingredients, cleaning work surfaces, or answering phones.
Driving
Deliver pizzas within a designated delivery area. A Team Member may make several deliveries per shift.

Work Conditions
EXPOSURE TO
• Varying and sometimes adverse weather conditions when removing trash and performing other outside tasks.
• In-store temperatures range from 36 degrees in cooler to 90 degrees and above in some work areas.
• Sudden changes in temperature in work area and while outside.
• Fumes from food odors.
• Exposure to cornmeal dust.
• Cramped quarters including walk-in cooler.
• Hot surfaces/tools from oven up to 500 degrees or higher.
• Sharp edges and moving mechanical parts.
• Varying and sometimes adverse weather conditions when delivering product, driving and couponing.
SENSING
• Talking and hearing on telephone. Near and mid-range vision for most in-store tasks.
• Depth perception.
• Ability to differentiate between hot and cold surfaces.
• Far vision and night vision for driving.

The ability to direct activities, perform repetitive tasks, work alone and with others, work under stress, meet strict quality control standards, deal with people, analyze and compile data, make judgements and decisions.
Additional Information
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS, including, but not limited to the following:
Standing
Most tasks are performed from a standing position. Walking surfaces include ceramic tile "bricks" with linoleum in some food process areas. Height of work surfaces is between 36" and 48".
Walking
For short distances for short durations
Delivery personnel must travel between the store and delivery vehicle and from the delivery vehicle to the customer's location.
Sitting
Paperwork is normally completed in an office at a desk or table
Lifting
Bulk product deliveries are made twice a week or more and are unloaded by the team member using a hand truck.
Deliveries may include cases of ingredients and supplies weighing up to 50 pounds with dimensions of up to 3' x 1.5'.
Cases are usually lifted from floor and stacked onto shelves up to 72" high.
Carrying
Large cans, weighing 3 pounds, 7 ounces, are carried from the workstation to storage shelves.
Occasionally, pizza sauce weighing 30 pounds is carried from the storage room to the front of the store.
Trays of pizza dough are carried three at a time over short distances, and weigh approximately 12 pounds per tray.
During delivery, carry pizzas and beverages while performing "walking" and "climbing" duties.
Pushing
To move trays which are placed on dollies.
A stack of trays on a dolly is approximately 24" - 30" and requires a force of up to 7.5 pounds to push.
Trays may also be pulled.
Climbing
Team members must infrequently navigate stairs or climb a ladder to change prices on signs, wash walls, perform maintenance.
During delivery of product, navigation of five or more flights of stairs may be required.
Stooping/Bending
Forward bending at the waist is necessary at the pizza assembly station.
Toe room is present, but workers are unable to flex their knees while standing at this station.
Duration of this position is approximately 30 - 45 seconds at one time, repeated continuously during the day.
Forward bending is also present at the front counter and when stocking ingredients.
Crouching/Squatting
Performed occasionally to stock shelves and to clean low areas.
Reaching
Reaching is performed continuously; up, down and forward.
Workers reach above 72" occasionally to turn on/off oven controls, change prices on sign, and lift and lower objects to and from shelves.
Workers reaching down to perform such tasks as scooping cornmeal from a plastic barrel, or washing dishes.
Workers reach forward when obtaining topping ingredients, cleaning work surfaces, or answering phones.
Driving
Deliver pizzas within a designated delivery area. A Team Member may make several deliveries per shift.
Machines, Tools, Equipment, Work Aids
Team Members may be required to utilize pencils/pens, computers, telephones, calculators, TDD equipment, pizza cutter and pizza peel.
Driving Specific Job Duties
Deliver product by car and then to door of customer.
Deliver flyers and door hangers.
Requires
Valid driver's license with safe driving record meeting company standards.
