SUMMARY

The Rock Hall’s Garage Musician is a performing musician responsible for creating an engaging experience for Rock Hall guests while sharing their love of the history and sounds of rock and roll. This includes facilitating the Rock Hall’s Garage space, interacting with guests, demonstrating and teaching instrument performance to audiences of varying skill levels, and working with the broader Education & Visitor Engagement team to make sure that the Museum is providing the best quality service possible. They exemplify the Rock Hall’s Fans First philosophy, have a deep knowledge of rock and roll history, and have an enthusiasm for performing in front of crowds and delivering high-quality educational experiences to fans from around the world.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

1. Works in the Garage space. This includes (but is not limited to) facilitating jam sessions, performing with guests, demonstrating and teaching instrument performance to audiences of varying skill levels, encouraging participation, handling logistics (capacity management, time management), and recording performances.

2. Learns and embodies the Rock Hall’s educational philosophy of Sound-Context-Meaning.

3. Maintains, rotates, and services Garage gear, including drums, basses, guitars, and keyboards
• Tunes guitars several times daily
• Tunes drums
• Changes drum heads and guitar strings
• Performs other maintenance tasks on gear as needed

4. Works closely with other members of the Education & Visitor Engagement division, including but not limited to Stories of Rock programming, Rock Hall Live performances, and Toddler Rock and Rockin’ the Schools educational programs.

5. Embodies the Museum’s mission to “Engage, Teach, and Inspire through the power of rock and roll.”
• Understands the Rock Hall brand and guests.
• Engages guests and helps them connect to the history and sounds of rock and roll.
• Communicates new ideas about how to better engage guests.
• Serves as a role model for all OnStage staff by exhibiting superior quality service.

Performs additional duties as required.

JOB REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

Education Level: High School degree or equivalent required. Preferred qualifications include a Bachelor’s degree in field related to the museum’s mission is preferred (music, performance, education, museum education). Ability to read and demonstrate basic oral, written, mathematical and manual skills. Ability to communicate in Standard English required. Spoken knowledge of other languages, particularly Spanish, is also a plus.

Experience in Field: Proficiency in music performance, preferably on multiple rock and roll instruments (guitar, bass, drums, keyboards); ability to read music (notation, tab, Nashville numbers) and experience as a live performer is preferred. A minimum of one (1) year professional experience in education, with preference given to those who have worked in a museum or cultural institutions as a teaching artist. Customer service experience in a cultural arts environment is preferred.

Technical Expertise: Knowledge and expertise of music gear and maintenance (including, but not limited to, tuning, string and drum head changing, and proper instrument set-up).

Unique Expertise/Certification/Registrations:
• Exhibit a strong commitment to working with educators and young people
• Strong public speaking, communication, and interpersonal skills; comfortable working with famous musicians & VIP guests
• Possess a passion for customer service and rock and roll
• Ability to organize and prioritize tasks to meet deadlines and manage multiple projects with minimal supervision and a strong attention to detail.
• Sets a strong example for others by initiating collaboration and working consistently in a collegial manner.
• Bilingual capabilities helpful.
• Ability to successfully pass a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame reference check, background investigation, and drug screen.

Working Conditions:

Work Schedule: Both part time and full time positions are available. The ability to work at least 20 hours per week is expected of part timers, and the ability at least 40 hours per week is expected of full timers; any shift as assigned, including evenings, weekends and holidays. Ability to work rotating shifts and on short notice. Ability to work overtime as business needs demand.

GENERAL SUMMARY:

The Sales Associate acts as a point of contact for our customers. The duties of the Sales Associate include assisting customers in locating and purchasing merchandise, operating the cash register, stocking merchandise, recovering merchandise, cleaning the store, and performing other duties as assigned by the Store Manager to maximize store profitability and customer satisfaction while protecting company assets.

• Rock Hall internships are paid positions and for enrichment purposes must be willing to work within other departments. This includes working scheduled shifts with the Fan Engagement and Museum Retail teams.
• The internship is onsite, starting early June and commencing early August, exact dates to be determined.
• Estimated weekly hours for this internship: 32 – 40 hours

Not only will all interns get an in depth, project-based learning and working experience, but all interns will also participate in an organization wide internship experience. Weekly career development sessions and panels with Rock Hall staff will ensure you are getting the most out of your time at the Rock Hall and completing the summer with new tools and resources when it comes to beginning your career. All intern positions will get a chance to work on the floor of the museum to learn firsthand how we create the world class guest experience for our visitors from around the globe. Lastly, all our interns will get to experience summer at the Rock Hall and Cleveland, getting to know the city that help build Rock & Roll, and all of the events and excitement we curate each summer.
