Duties and Responsibilities...
• Manage all aspects of archaeological collections and care following accepted museum and archaeological professional standards and best practices.
• Interact with potential donors and researchers to facilitate proposed gifts to the Museum's collections.
• In collaboration with senior museum staff, promote and implement best practices for the management of paper & digital records associated with the archaeological collections while remaining compliant with relevant laws and university policies.
• Participate in public science, heritage, and archaeology outreach events, such as Michigan Archaeology Day, MSU Science Fest, and MSU Museum outreach events.
• Engage with and contribute to the broader archaeology, heritage, collections, and museum communities through attending and presenting at conferences, workshops, and working group meetings.
• Prepare documentation including provenance history and deeds of gift for new accessions, as well as research documentation for deaccessioning.
• Administer loan agreements and ensures adherence to established policies and ethical professional practice.
• Encourage, facilitate, and manage access to archaeological collections by students, scholars, Indigenous groups, descent communities, and cultural stewards for the purposes of teaching, research, and outreach. Maintain an annual log of collections use and associated reports and publications for the purposes of Museum reporting.
• Work with community stakeholders, to incorporate their viewpoints in interpretation through collaborative research and contributions to programming (lectures, workshops, conferences).
• Manage and negotiate copyright and cultural property permissions for collections.
• In collaboration with senior museum staff and the Anthropology facilities liaison, establishes conservation priorities and plans/implements the safe storage of all objects/specimens in the collection. Actively engage in monitoring physical collections spaces and ensure that they remain compliant with 36CFR79.
• In collaboration with curatorial and other collections staff, maintain and update the Museum collections policy and collections development plan.
• In collaboration with curatorial and other collection staff, develop and implement a digitization, preservation, and access policy for Museum collections.
• Consult and collaborate with MSU NAGPRA Program Manager on all NAGPRA related issues.
• Assist in preparing proposals and grant applications for collections-oriented projects.
• Maintain and update the archaeological collections records in the Museums collection management system and online collection portal.
• Help further develop the current institutional goals of ethical stewardship, including fostering relationship building, collaborative dialogue, and diverse perspectives within museum spaces.
• May train and supervise student employees, interns, and/or volunteers performing related work.
• Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Education and Experience
• A strong educational background in North American archaeology, with an emphasis in Great Lakes (preferred) or Eastern North American archaeology.
• A minimum two years of professional experience managing archaeological collections.
• Demonstrated experience managing North American archaeological collections.
• Demonstrated experience working with Indigenous and descent community members to achieve collaboratively developed goals and outcomes.
• Demonstrated knowledge of relevant local, state, federal, and international law and policy related to archaeological materials and collections.
• Demonstrated knowledge and experience with collections digitization, documentation, preservation, and access. Demonstrated experience applying for and securing external funds, either through grant applications or fundraising.
• Demonstrated success in program development and delivery to diverse audiences/communities. Self-motivated with demonstrated ability to work independently in an office environment.
• Ability to create and carryout a project plan from research of initial concept to project completion and follow-up.
• Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
• Proficiency in use of technology (e.g., web research, Microsoft Teams, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook for mail/calendaring, distance technology, etc.) for day-to-day work and educational program delivery, record keeping, reporting, team-based communications, and overall management.
• Ability to lift and carry educational materials, equipment, etc. up to 25 lbs.

• Responsible for creating processes and procedures to improve segmentation of members and better manipulation of our data
• Teams with Associate, Member Engagement as a cross-trained partner to ensure smooth administrative operations and prompt assistance to members

The SAA is a collegial small but mighty team, mostly working remotely but always collaboratively to provide members with high quality programs and services.

Required skills
• Detailed oriented and able to enter and correct data with accuracy
• Comfortable with member databases and able to identify ways to segment data, clean up confusing data, produce data reports, and improve the Society’s workflows through the Association Management Software (e.g., iMIS)
