DESCRIPTION
The San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) is a world leader in using, innovating and providing cyberinfrastructure to enable advances and new discovery in science and engineering. Focusing on data-oriented and computational science and engineering applications, SDSC serves as an international resource for data cyberinfrastructure through the provision of software, hardware and human resources in multi-disciplinary science and engineering, and serves as a leadership national cyberinfrastructure Center to the National Science Foundation (NSF) and broader community.
The Center for Applied Internet Data Analysis (CAIDA) is an independent analysis and research group based at the University of California's San Diego Supercomputer Center. CAIDA investigates both practical and theoretical aspects of the Internet, with particular focus on topics that are macroscopic in nature and provide enhanced insight into the function of Internet infrastructure worldwide, improve the integrity of the field of Internet science as well as the integrity of operational Internet measurement and management, and inform science, technology, and communications public policies.
POSITION OVERVIEW:
The Systems and Network Administrator will apply skills as an experienced systems infrastructure professional with a strong understanding of Internet infrastructure measurement opportunities: Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) routing, Domain Name System (DNS), and an understanding of industry best practices in these areas. The incumbent work closely with collaborators in the Route Views project to maintain, automate, evolve, and rearchitect various components of the largest Internet routing research instrumentation in the U.S. The incumbent will design, deploy, manage, enhance, and document measurement and data management infrastructure in support of evolving cybersecurity research and networking needs. They will also design continuous integration/deployment of infrastructure leveraging modern infrastructure-as-code (IaC) technologies, e.g., Ansible; select and architect, and implement big data management and processing systems to facilitate security research use of large data archives, e.g., Apache Kafka, Hive; as well as perform simple to moderate cost/benefit analyses in the development of measurement instrumentation and data capture, management, processing, and dissemination systems. Additionally, the incumbent will develop, implement, and deploy virtualization solutions for measurement and analysis software capabilities; build dashboards to aggregate and correlate usage statistics across data sets and time; and manage community software issues and task prioritization based on community workshops and meetings. The Systems and Network Administrator will also architect new metadata and schemas for existing community data sets, including for integration of data into cloud platform technologies.

QUALIFICATIONS
• Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
• Ability to write technical documentation in a clear and concise manner. Ability to interact and communicate clearly, professionally, and effectively with members of a diverse peer and user population in person, via email, over the phone, and in writing, including the ability to present technical information in a group.
• Strong knowledge and experience with Internet technology, protocols and standards, including: TCP/IP protocol stack, IPv4, IPv6, BGP, routing, DNS. Experience with switches, routers, load balancers, and firewalls.
• Experience with designing, maintaining and configuring complex distributed Internet measurement network infrastructure and data processing infrastructure and approaches. Specific experience in accomplishing these tasks by leveraging Big Data platforms, such as Apache Spark and Kafka (or equivalent) and databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL, Redis).
• Demonstrated strong experience with setup, operation and maintenance of Unix operating systems (FreeBSD, Ubuntu) as well as design, configuration, and deployment of complex cloud computing environments (e.g., OpenStack).
• Experience with Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) implementations (e.g., Ansible, AWS CloudFormation, Azure).
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
• Job offer is contingent upon satisfactory clearance based on Background Check results.
Pay Transparency Act
Annual Full Pay Range: $63,400 - $142,800 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)
Hourly Equivalent: $30.36 - $68.39
Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
