About you
Moving at our pace brings a lot of change, complexity, and ambiguity—and a little bit of chaos. Shopifolk thrive on that and are comfortable being uncomfortable. That means Shopify is not the right place for everyone.
Before you apply, consider if you can:
• Care deeply about what you do and about making commerce better for everyone
• Excel by seeking professional and personal hypergrowth
• Keep up with an unrelenting pace (the week, not the quarter)
• Be resilient and resourceful in face of ambiguity and thrive on (rather than endure) change
• Bring critical thought and opinion — and embrace differences and disagreement to get shit done and move forward
• Work digital-first for your daily work
Job Description
The Communications Data team owns data initiatives related to the Comms mission: sharing the what - the primary messages we want the world to understand, and the how - the ways in which we share our story with the world. Comms positions Shopify as a technology leader that is pulling the future forward, and they storytell using data-informed statistics and insights. As a company we are doing incredible things for our merchants and data helps us tell this story to the world [see how this Shopify merchant created 14,000 jobs in India.].
Reporting to Data Science, Shopify is hiring a data analyst with a storytelling archetype. This team member will craft the data behind our stories to make them impactful and trustworthy to audiences worldwide. The work includes contributing vetted data to stories that will be shared publicly with media, government, and the world through Shopify’s website. The team collaborates with data teams across Shopify to empower Communications with knowledge from data domain experts. Our mandate is challenging, varied and constantly evolving.
The analyst will leverage their expertise in data querying and manipulation to create analyses and data products that answer complex business questions and enable decision-making. This data will shape how Comms and Public Relations view and position Shopify’s impact on the global economy and community. This individual will be aligned with Data Science and have Comms and Public Affairs as its primary stakeholder.
Responsibilities:
• Identify opportunities to increase the impact of Shopify storytelling with data
• Generate high-impact insights that tell Shopify’s story to the world
• Work within Data Science and Comms teams to enable improved discovery of vetted data points
• Lead and own work
• Become an expert at navigating Shopify data to answer business questions
Qualifications
• Expertise in telling a story with data in order to guide conversations, persuade your audience, and influence decision makers
• Extensive knowledge of SQL for data extraction and manipulation and proficiency with Python (Git helpful)
• Experience with BI, visualization or data analysis tools such as Mode, Tableau, Looker
• Excellent interpersonal and collaboration skills - you are able to work effectively with a diverse group of technical and non-technical stakeholders at all levels of the organization
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• High attention to detail, but an equally important ability to see the big picture and evaluate analyses with strategic business context
• Good time management and organizational skills - ability to manage multiple priorities and timelines and address challenges in a collaborative team environment
• Endless curiosity and an ability to think outside of the box
