Simmons University Police Officers work in a team based environment
to support the Simmons University Public Safety Department and the
Simmons University community by providing Public Safety and Law
Enforcement services with dignity and respect. Police Officers will
assist in providing a safe and secure community with the highest
degrees of ethics and integrity.

Police Officers will protect the lives of the Simmons University
community as well as safeguard the property of Simmons University.
Police Officers will enforce the regulations of Simmons University
and the Massachusetts General Laws.

Essential Functions:

1. Protect life and property. Working as a member of a team, and in
problem solving partnerships with the community, actively seeks to
identify safety and security related problems and concerns and take
the necessary steps to resolve those problems or concerns
efficiently and effectively.

2. Respond safely and rapidly to emergency calls for police service
such as reports of crimes in progress; suspected criminal activity;
medical emergencies; environmental emergencies; fires, fire alarms;
motion and intrusion alarms; and accidents, etc. Render aid as
required. Conduct thorough initial investigations of incidents and
follow up investigations as assigned. Assist Massachusetts State
Police, Boston Police, Transit Police; COF Police and Public Safety
service providers; Boston Fire; Boston EMS; and other public safety
service as requested and/or required.

3. Enforce the laws of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and
applicable Simmons University regulations. Arrest criminal
offenders when necessary and participate effectively in the
subsequent court preparation and prosecution proceedings. Refer
student offenders for internal disciplinary action to Student Life,
Judicial Affairs, etc., and participate effectively in the
University's internal disciplinary process. Assists members of the
Community and in the civil and criminal court process. Assist in
training of newly hired Police Officers and Public Safety
Officers.

4. Prevent criminal activity in and around the University through
highly visible, omnipresent police patrols. Provide and/or
participate in crime prevention briefings to the community. Attend
community events and speak to students, faculty and/or staff
regarding strategies and tactics to stay safe.

5. Operate department communication equipment; answer telephone
inquiries; receive and document reports of criminal activity;
dispatch foot and mobile units; operate paging system; monitor
alarm and CCTV systems.

6. Perform safety and security inspections of all campus
facilities, grounds and equipment, on foot, bicycle, or motor
vehicle. Assist with parking enforcement and the monitoring of
parking resources.

7. The Chief of Police and/or their designee may assign other
duties of Department operation and function as needed to best suit
the Department and University needs.

Mandatory Position Requirements
• Applicants must have successfully completed a Municipal Police
Training Committee (MPTC) certified basic police Recruit Officer
Course or the Mass. State Police SSPO Academy in New Braintree MA
to be eligible for POST (Peace Officers Standards and Training)
certification.
• Applicants must be eligible for appointment as a Special State
Police Officer in accordance with M.G.L. ch.22 s. 63
• Applicants who have completed an out-of-state full time recruit
academy must have 2 years full time law enforcement experience to
be eligible for a permanent exemption from the Municipal Police
Training Committee (MPTC).
• High School diploma or GED equivalent
• At least 21 years old
• Applicants must be able to obtain a Massachusetts Driver's
License and Massachusetts Class A License to Carry
• Candidates will be required to pass a comprehensive background
check, psychological exam, drug test, and pre-employment medical
exam

The Simmons University Public Safety Department is a 24 hour, 7

essential function to Simmons University. This position would

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Reporting to the Assistant Director of Operations for the College of Social Sciences, Policy, and Practice, the Program Specialist assists in the operations and implementation of Simmons University’s courses and degrees in the online @Simmons Programs. Patrol Assignments

Demonstrate working knowledge and application for all relevant Rules and Procedures, Standard Operating Procedures, and Emergency Response Protocols relevant to their duties and responsibilities as Dispatchers;
• Interact with and monitor a variety of electronic database systems as end users, to include Computer Aided Dispatch, Video Insight- IP Video based surveillance system, PTZ Cameras, IPARC, *Cure 9000, ARMS, Web RMV, Criminal Justice Information Systems (CJIS), Workday;
• Support all University departments, particularly Residential and Student Life and Buildings and Grounds.
• Communicate with the Boston Police Department (BPD), Boston Fire Department (BFD) and Boston Emergency Medical Services (BEMS), and other relevant Federal, State and Local enforcement and safety/security related agencies that provide for the public safety on campus and in the immediate surrounding areas;
• Responsible for important emergency and routine notifications to a variety of University and outside officials, including the Public Safety command staff, Buildings and Grounds staff, Student and Residential Life staff; Health Center and Counseling staff, BPD, BFD, and BEMS as well as dispatchers at other area colleges;
• Monitor all security and life safety systems on campus to assure that they operate properly and to respond as needed.

Confidentiality
• In the performance of their duties, but particularly when dispatching, PSO's routinely interact with persons in distress and are often provided with information that is not intended to be public, for a variety of reasons. PSO's are required to maintain the confidentiality of information that is received during the course of their duties, i.e., criminal investigations, healthcare / other privacy laws, policies, and/or procedures, etc.

Customer Service Supporting the Community
• PSOs are often the connection to the Simmons University Community for visitors, callers, other agencies, and vendors. They are expected to be professional at all times and comply with the policies and procedures of the department and the University, while providing excellent customer service. They are expected to help solve problems or direct people to the appropriate person who can assist them. As such, PSO duties would at times include assignment to the Simmons Hall security booth on the Residence campus

Adaptability

Circumstances dictating, PSOs will be assigned other duties as necessary for the safe and efficient operation of the Public Safety Department.

• Advise students on University policies, the student handbook, the Student Foundations course (in collaboration with Student Support), procedures, program requirements, practicum requirements, and all other academic matters;
• Provide periodic outreach and communications to students about new policies and frequently asked questions by students;
• Track and report on student progress to Program Director, Course Leads and Section Instructors; Proactively monitor student progress, identify students who may be at risk, implement strategies in collaboration with the faculty, measure and help support academic success;
• Manage student handbook iterations and collaborate with faculty leadership regarding changes to policy;
• Provide students with preemptive guidance on acclimating to their new graduate online program lifestyle and building supportive personal environments and best practices to facilitate their student success;
• Assist, educate and coach students in best practices on how to be a successful online student;
• Coach students through the reinstatement process and expectations of Academic Review Board hearings;
• Serve as the main point of contact for all disputes and various other administrative needs of the students;
• Develop strong proficiency in Learning Management System and supporting analytics and reporting;
• Serve on admissions committee as a file reviewer and provide support for admissions process if necessary.

Operations Support:
• Collaborate with Assistant Director of Operations to track current students, leaves of absence, and project new student
• Develop surveys of graduates, current students, and stakeholders in the field and analyze the results
• Work on discrete projects, providing project management, documentation, and support and other duties as assigned
• Work collaboratively with key stakeholders to communicate, complete tasks, and provide input on systems in an efficient and effective manner to best support students in all stages of the program;
