The Intermittent Librarian classification is a rewarding opportunity and plays an important role in maintaining information services and readers’ advisory when intermittent staffing is needed. The Intermittent Librarian position is used to fill-in for 3- to 8-hour appointments when needed with responsibilities including: providing and ensuring the quality, content, method, and delivery of information services, reference, and readers’ advisory to the general public; assisting patrons with library technology; providing a welcoming environment, including the ability to apply the Library’s Rules of Conduct; and answering patron requests for information in person and by phone.

Employees are not placed on unit schedules and do not normally work on or assist with projects or programs. Intermittent employees may also be scheduled to backfill for a short-duration when existing staff are scheduled away from the branch for events such as outreach events. Intermittent staff may be assigned to any branch or Central Library location during hours that the library is open to the public. Selection for employment as an intermittent employee will give consideration to the candidate’s availability for work locations and hours.

Qualifications

Education: Must have an MLS/MLIS from an ALA-accredited library school and Washington State Certification as a Librarian.

Information Services: Minimum six (6)-months of experience providing information services to the general public or directed fieldwork or an internship in a public library for recent graduates, is required. One (1) year of information service experience is desired.

Technology and Informational Resources: Must have current working knowledge of PC’s in a Windows environment, library applications and be able to use on-line, Internet searching methods and information resources. Familiarity with digital media and digital media platforms, such as e-books and Overdrive, and the ability to provide effective customer service to patrons using these media on a variety of devices, including computers, laptops, tablets, and mobile devices, is highly desirable. Experience with Horizon library automation or a similar system is preferred.

Exemplary Customer Service: Minimum one year of experience providing customer service and/or instructional or outreach services to the general public. The successful candidates will demonstrate a real commitment to public service and providing exceptional customer service. Candidates should have experience working successfully and effectively as part of a team to provide a safe and welcoming environment in a busy urban public library setting. Candidates must possess excellent interpersonal communication, problem solving, customer relations and teamwork skills; a sense of humor; and the ability to demonstrate a positive and enthusiastic commitment to public service.

Excellent Communication and Interpersonal Skills: Experience in public speaking and formal writing skills are highly desired, as is fluency in a foreign language (particularly Spanish, Asian, East African languages) or American Sign Language. Must be able to communicate clearly, diplomatically, and in a friendly and positive manner with staff and library users from diverse ethnic, socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds, as well as with neighborhood-based or special interest groups.

These positions report to the Director of Library Programs and Services or the Assistant Director for Public Services and are members of the Public Services Management Team (PSMT), which consists of seven Regional Managers, the Assistant Director for Equity, Learning & Engagement Services (ELES) and ELES Service Managers. The PSMT works collaboratively to lead the development of responsive public services and innovative operational systems, and to implement and support effective policies and procedures to guide the work of Public Services staff throughout the system.

The Youth and Family Learning Services (YFLS) team focuses on strengthening the Library’s contribution to the education and experiences of Seattle’s youth and families. The team promotes a variety of formal and informal learning opportunities that address the diverse needs of the communities that they serve. The framework and approach to their work is emerging and influenced by what they are learning from the community and best practices for optimal development, learning, and engagement with tweens, teens, young adults, and their families.

The Teen & Young Adult Services Program Manager will be a member of the Library’s innovative and forward-thinking Youth and Family Learning Services Team, which is part of the Library’s Equity, Learning, and Engagement Services unit. This position will respond to the evolving needs and interest of our communities by developing and supporting community-led programs and activities that promote cultural enrichment, school and career readiness and success, teen development and engagement, and community building. This position will report to the Library's Youth and Family Learning Services Manager. It is based at the Central Library and will work in library branches and offsite locations throughout the City.

This position will build the capacity of library staff in areas of student support, equity practices, and program evaluation. This role will also coordinate outreach and engagement efforts across the city and will take on additional projects, programs and areas of responsibility as needed including providing training, coaching, and support to teams of staff and individuals. Programs managed by this position include Homework Help, Learning Buddies, Teen Internships and other teen and community engagement programs.

The successful candidate must demonstrate a strong commitment to providing high quality learning opportunities for youth roughly between the ages of 11-26 or 6th grade through young adulthood, and understand tween, teen, and young adult learning and development as well as the role of the family and community in the larger context. They will have demonstrated experience engaging and collaborating with partners using culturally responsive strategies and have a good understanding of relationship building, power sharing, and collaboration when working with and between community and institutional partners. The candidate will have knowledge of and comfort working with relevant local communities, government agencies and community-based organizations, extensive project management and team facilitation experience, and experience operating in a cross-functional team.
• Programming: Develop culturally responsive and appropriate, coordinated, and innovative programs, initiatives, and events. Design, plan, and implement local and system-wide programs and events that service the civic, educational, recreational and cultural needs of tweens, teens, young adults, and their families. Coordinate system-wide programming by collaborating with staff, community, and partners throughout Seattle.
• Partnerships: Provide excellent program effectiveness by developing and maintaining key relationships through a wide range of partnerships and collaborative projects with schools, government agencies, philanthropic organizations and other service providers. Work with community partners to implement programs and services and serve as liaison between the Library and community organizations that provide complementary services.
• Project management: Effectively coordinate and administer multiple programs, projects and events. Lead or support work teams that include a diversity of backgrounds, perspectives, skill sets, experiences and abilities. Tasks include planning, scheduling, budgeting, development and communication of procedures, data tracking, evaluation, and reporting.
• Evaluation and analysis: Support efforts to conduct community analysis to understand and track changes in demographics, and community interests, needs and trends. Develop and implement outcomes-based evaluations of programs and initiatives; measure impacts against service objectives, make recommendations for changes or improvements as required. Research and prepare periodic reports and records.
• Racial equity and social justice: Commitment to the City of Seattle’s Race and Social Justice Initiative Work by coordinating system-wide programming, services, outreach, and community engagement to youth and families furthest from racial, digital, economic, educational, and social justice. Prioritize community listening and responsiveness into the planning and programming cycle so that services are community driven and community led.
• Budget management: Assist with budget preparation. Manage expenditure tracking for program budgets, and prepare Board, Foundation, and other reports as needed.

Serve on internal committees and coordinate with staff across the system on large-scale projects. Keep library staff and stakeholders informed about the progress of community engagement efforts.

• Leadership: Serve on library and community committees focused on a variety of cultural activities and programs.
