The Star Tribune, a Pulitzer Prize-winning, locally owned newsroom, is looking for a high-impact Audience Engagement Producer to join its growing Audience team...
About you:
The ideal candidate is ambitious, creative and passionate about growing our audience while cultivating deep relationships with Star Tribune readers. You're someone who gets as much delight out of a hilarious TikTok meme as you do a complex Instagram presentation that showcases deep investigative journalism. You’ll optimize our storytelling on social media, including Instagram, Facebook and Reddit, as well as find engaging ways to showcase our enterprise reporting. You’ll be tasked with developing new strategies and workflows as those platforms evolve. This position is key in building strong partnerships across the newsroom, gaining buy-in and inspiring a culture of innovation and accountability. In a rapidly changing media landscape, you’re a change agent, possessing a deep understanding of how legacy news operations must merge DEI aspirations with audience engagement strategy to succeed.
About us:
For our community, the newsroom produces breaking news stories, deeply reported narratives, explanatory pieces, high-impact investigative reports and powerful visual journalism. The Audience team is in the middle of it all – working across departments to ensure maximum exposure for our coverage. We are the upper Midwest’s largest source of news and information with a weekly readership of 1.3 million people in the Minneapolis–St. Paul metropolitan area and with subscribers in all 50 states.
What you’ll be doing:
• Developing a vision for and leading the Star Tribune’s main presence on Instagram, Facebook, Reddit, LinkedIn, TikTok, Twitter and potentially other platforms. Providing breaking news coverage, brainstorming and executing innovative social plans for enterprise projects and engaging readers in crowdsourcing projects.
• Building and editing creative native social content (i.e. Instagram Reels, Stories, posts, TikTok videos, etc.).
• Collaborating with reporters and editors to ensure stories are optimized for promotion across multiple platforms.
• Creating social content that grows our brand awareness and reputation as a trusted news leader among current and the next generation of Star Tribune readers and subscribers.
• Monitoring on- and off-platform conversations and suggesting story ideas that respond to readers’ needs and questions.
• Analyzing traffic reports to help strengthen our understanding of readership patterns, while also developing a constantly updating set of best practices for engaging off-platform audiences.
• Evangelizing an audience-first mentality across the newsroom, contributing your brainpower to best practices in audience-sensitive framing, headline writing, SEO and other engagement strategies.
Qualifications:
We are committed to diversity and creating an inclusive newsroom, and we encourage members of traditionally underrepresented communities to apply. Don’t worry if your experience doesn’t match this job description exactly — you may still be a great candidate for this position. If you apply, please let us know how your skills and experience relate to the role and its objectives.
• Newsroom experience, preferably in audience/digital roles focused on off-platform. (But surprise us if you’ve done other related work!)
• Deep understanding of all mainstream and emerging social platforms.
• Strong instincts and a passion for telling stories that engage, inform and delight our audience.
• A strategic mind who is eager to experiment to find what resonates with various audiences.
• A track record of building audience through strategy and/or initiatives.
• Adept at creating promotion plans and executing them off-platform.
• Strong writing and editing skills to go along with keen news judgment, strong communication skills and the ability to work independently and collaboratively.
• Solid understanding of audience analytics and best practices on social media.
Pay for this position ranges from $55,600 to $77,800 a year, depending on experience. Wages are noted in the contract of Star Tribune and the Minnesota Newspaper and Communications Guild.
Schedule:
Flexible daytime hours Mondays through Fridays; occasional weekend and evening shifts may be necessary.
To apply:
Please upload a resume and link to a portfolio of your work.
Benefits:
Some top benefits include: a new downtown office with free gym access to Capella Tower Health Club in the building and access to rooftop amenities in warm months; commuter benefits; flexible, hybrid work; competitive medical, dental, vision, and disability insurance; paid time off; parenting leave; 401(k) matching; tuition assistance; pet insurance; wellness benefits; flexible spending accounts; and unlimited digital access to Star Tribune.
