How your work would contribute to our organization and the Twin Cities region: The Electronic Tech Commuter Rail position maintains and repairs Metro Transit's Commuter Rail internal communication systems, public communications systems, electronic systems, and other assigned related duties. What... you would do in this job - Installs, removes, inspects, maintains, repairs, and replaces or modifies electronic and electrical components and defective parts for commuter rail communications and SCADA system equipment. The list of equipment or systems include, but not limited to: - Electronic Destination Signs at commuter rail stations - On-board Electronic Signage - Public Address Systems - On-board Camera Systems - DVR/Multiplexer Systems - Base Stations/Antennas/Multiplexers - Rail Switch Heaters - Telephone System Equipment - Mobile Radios - Portable Radios - AVL/GPS Systems - WLAN Systems - Ancillary Electronic Systems - Programmable Logic Controllers - Lift Controllers and Remotes - Operates various vehicles and equipment associated with the maintenance and repair of Commuter communication and SCADA system equipment. - Refurbishes electronic components for commuter rail maintenance department. - Performs data entry, device downloads, and logs activity for supervisor to review. Performs these activities using: - Maintenance Work Order Entry - AVL Database Entry - Device Maintenance Software - Microsoft Windows applications - Maintains parts inventory and computer inventory records. - Attends Safety and Training meetings; participates in emergency preparedness systems. - Performs other related duties as assigned or apparent. What education and experience are required for this job (minimum qualifications) Education and Experience: Any of the following combinations of administrative work experience and completed education (degree field of study in electrical/electronic engineering technology or computer networking or related): High school diploma or GED AND four (4) years of related experience in radio and other communications equipment, electronic test equipment, analog and digital systems, and Microsoft Windows. An Associate Degree in electrical/electronic engineering technology from a two (2) year technical school or college AND (2) years of related experience in radio and other communications equipment, electronic test equipment, analog and digital systems, and Microsoft Windows. License Requirements: - Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record. What knowledge, skills and abilities you should have within the first six months on the job: Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: - Proficient in electronic theory - Strong electronic troubleshooting ability - Proficient with commuter operations and repair - Proficient in electronic networking - Proficient with hand tools - Proficient at soldering - Proficient with Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel - Ability to climb ladders and work on top of a commuter train with safety harness - Knowledge of FCC rules and regulations related to two-way communications - Knowledge of component level repair - Knowledge of radio programming software - Knowledge and experience with safety practices as they pertain to electronic systems - Skilled in troubleshooting electrical components - Skilled in using computer programs - Ability to work in a team environment - Ability to apply and use mechanical skills - Ability to use test equipment, basic hand and power tools and special equipment used to maintain Commuter Rail wayside electronic and electro-mechanical systems - Ability to read schematics and blueprints for electrical and electronic controls - Ability to maintain accurate records Additional information Union/Grade: ATU/Grade 65 FLSA Status: Non-Exempt Safety Sensitive: Yes Work Environment: This position has exposure to extreme weather conditions where there is no effective protection from outside environmental conditions; inside environmental conditions where there is protection from weather conditions but not necessarily from temperamental changes; loud noises; exposure to hazards such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, electrical current, and working near moving parts, atmospheric conditions, and vibration. Travel between primary work site to other sites is required. Physical Requirement: This position may require to stand, walk, talk or hear; use hands to finger, handle or feel, stoop, kneel, crouch and crawl and reach with hands and arms; bend and twist at the neck and waist; work at heights and climb ladders and/or stairs. Lift up to fifty (50) pounds. May work near moving parts or equipment, in the presence of fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals and vibrations. May also be required to lift more than 100 pounds with assistance of applicable equipment or other employees. If you are new to the Metropolitan Council, you must pass a drug test (safety sensitive positions only), and a background check which verifies education, employment, and criminal history. A driving record check and/or physical may be conducted if applicable to the job. If you have a criminal conviction, you do not automatically fail. The Metropolitan Council considers felony, gross misdemeanor and misdemeanor convictions on a case-by-case basis, based on whether they are related to the job and whether the candidate has demonstrated adequate rehabilitation.
