We aim to bring clarity and original thinking to questions of consequence, on topics ranging from politics, the economy, and global affairs to technology, science, and culture. As the third-longest-running magazine in America, we find ourselves at a remarkable moment: one of both continuation and transformation, of upholding our legacy while continuously reinventing ourselves for the future. We’re looking for a creative, versatile, and highly organized contract editor to join the Culture, Books, and Family team for five months, from May through September 2023. You’ll be working with some of the sharpest editors, critics, and reporters in the magazine business to lead the national conversation on all things culture. Our team’s coverage spans popular culture, literature, broader cultural trends, and the forces that shape people’s relationships... and personal lives. We work quickly but with an eye toward identifying and tackling big ideas and questions. In this role, you will edit both staff writers and freelancers, focusing on pop culture but editing across a variety of subjects and story types: perhaps a timely review of a major blockbuster film (or a sleeper indie hit), a 2,000-word reported human-behavior story, a quick-turnaround piece of newsy analysis, or a deeply considered critical essay. You’ll be involved in the entire editing process, from idea generation to publication. You’ll do structural and line editing, and put the finishing touches on pieces with headlines, art, and social-media sells. In working with several of our writers, you’ll coordinate with the section editor and other colleagues on short- and long-term story planning. Qualifications of the ideal candidate: Experience as a culture editor (though we will consider a more general-interest editor with strong magazine experience and knowledge of cultural criticism) Impeccable news judgment and an eye for argument and stylish execution A track record of working with, and generating ideas with, high-level writers Deep familiarity with The Atlantic and its culture coverage Openness to a wide variety of views and perspectives Strong communication skills and a collaborative spirit This job is based at The Atlantic’s offices in either New York City or Washington, D.C. We will consider remote candidates based elsewhere in the United States as well. This is a five-month position. Annualized Salary Minimum: $100,000, Annualized Salary Maximum: $130,000. (The Atlantic voluntarily recognized one bargaining unit covering its newsroom in 2021 and a second unit covering many of its business and technology teams in 2022; collective bargaining of an initial contract is in process for the former and expected to begin soon for the latter.)
The role may be filled at the Manager, Senior Manager, or Director level, commensurate with experience. • In partnership with the Talent & Culture team, implement and maintain the Company’s labor relations programs, policies, and procedures, including assisting in drafting and editing
• Lead document and data collection and financial analysis efforts relating to CBA negotiation and administration, working with stakeholders across the company as required
• Facilitate proactive communications and working relationships with NewsGuild staff and bargaining unit representatives, including coordination of and participation in labor-management committees
• Exercise judgment in which issues can be independently and efficiently resolved and which should be escalated to the General Counsel, SVP of Talent & Culture, and/or other Company executives
• Maintain up-to-date knowledge of (and/or conduct research as necessary regarding) labor relations trends, legal decisions, and statutory updates
Requirements
• 5+ years of experience in labor relations, working with a unionized workforce
• Experience administering collective bargaining agreements
• Expertise interpreting and practically applying collective bargaining agreements, federal labor law, and federal and state employment law
• High emotional intelligence – the ability to modulate tone and approach, consistent with organizational values, strategic priorities, and individual circumstances
• Ability to build and maintain relationships at all levels of an organization
• Strong verbal and written communication skills
• Detail-oriented and strong organizational skills
• Creative, solution-oriented, and business-minded
• Ability to independently analyze and solve complex problems, proactively spot issues, exercise sound and strategic judgment, and prioritize multiple workflows
• Highest levels of professionalism, integrity, ethical conduct, and discretion
The Ideal Candidate Will Also Have

• In partnership with the Talent & Culture team, implement and maintain the Company’s labor relations programs, policies, and procedures, including assisting in drafting and editing
• Lead document and data collection and financial analysis efforts relating to CBA negotiation and administration, working with stakeholders across the company as required
• Facilitate proactive communications and working relationships with NewsGuild staff and bargaining unit representatives, including coordination of and participation in labor-management committees
